I love supporting businesses such as Kendall Mountain Cafe. This is family owned and operated, with two daughters pitching in as servers. I stopped by after running a Saturday race, and the father is running the Sunday race (I was wearing my backpack which still had the bib pinned to it, which prompted the conversation). The mother put me at a four top even though I was dining alone, saying that was all she had, and she was so welcoming there was no issue with a solo guest. The place is down to earth, not pretentious, as if you had stepped into this family's basement. The prices are so reasonable I left a 75% tip, because I don't see how they can make enough money to survive.
The food was excellent. You can tell from the menu this is home cooking in the best sense. The special was Frito Pie. I have had that before, at a potluck picnic where someone cut open a bag of Frito's to dump in chili. Here, it was in a bowl on a plate, allowing you eat it either in the bowl or on the plate. I would have liked some sour cream, but that is a quibble. I ordered a side salad to be healthy. It was plated with care you wouldn't expect, laid out in a circular pattern. I had a Sprite served in a fountain cup, consistent with the nothing fancy ethos.
I don't know Silverton well. But I can see from this visit that the town is about three blocks long. It is a great destination for outdoor activities. The races this weekend are one of many in the area. Kendall Mountain Cafe fits in. This establishment exemplifies the vibe here.
