We had a fantastic time on a group trip to North Country Rivers. We camped in the large group area. Our family was the first in our group to arrive, so we headed to the little pub that is on premise and had one of the best salads I've had in a long time. The bar was great and had a huge selection of beers (tap and bottle) and cocktails. The bartender was very accommodating to our teenagers and was very engaging.
Camping on the field was great, the ground was flat and soft, the bathrooms were a short walk away. It is Maine, so bring the bug spray and a screen tent! The bathroom facilities were decent, especially given the number of guests that use them during the day. My only complaint was that the shower was "pay for use". I totally get why, as there are lots of guests and limited showers, so this keeps people moving and also keeps the hot water bill low. HOWEVER, 25 cents only got me a 2 minute shower and it took 90 seconds to have water warm enough to stand in. Needless to say, it was a quick shower!
On Saturday, we got ready for our trip. We went down to the lodge, the rules and process were reviewed with everyone and then we were sent to get our gear. The staff was great, everything was organized and soon we boarded our busses to the dam at the Kennebec. The ride was pleasant and there was clean bathroom facility for us to use before the big release. Our guides were great, with a special shout out to Bruce, our raft guide and Papa, the trip leader. This was my first time rafting, but Bruce put me at ease and we did lots of dry land practicing and more once we got in the water and before the dam released. Once the water started gushing, we were all smiles and my nerves turned into joy. As to be expected, the majority of the rapids were during the first leg of the trip, but once everything quieted down a bit, we were allowed to swim (with the life jackets on) and that was a great time as well. Especially for the boys! Lunch was prepared by our guides on a nice camp. It was a cloudy, rainy day, so the warm food was extra tasty. So was the camp fires!
Another 45 minutes of rafting and we were back on the bus and headed back to base. The ride back was fun and we had an impromptu sing-along to Bohemian Rhapsody. Back at base, we were instructed on where to put our gear. Again, it was well organized. We headed across the field to our campsite and had dinner (although I really craved another meal at the pub).
Big thumbs up for North Country Rivers for a great time! We are already planning our next trip!
