Kennedy Space Center, Merritt Island, Orlando, Florida, United States - Landmark Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Tell us a bit of the history behind the Kennedy Space Center. The Kennedy Space Center was most famously the launch pad for the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969. Today the complex welcomes around 1.5 million visitors a year, and encompasses more than 130 square miles. It’s a comprehensive space experience, with real-life artifacts and spacecraft mixed in with impressive multimedia presentations. Wow. What can we expect to see on an average visit? One of the main draws here is the actual space shuttle, the Atlantis orbiter, which goes hand-in-hand with the Shuttle Launch Experience, an immersive simulator. A little more retro but still engaging is the Apollo/Saturn V Center, again with an actual rocket on display and a recreation of a control room. The Astronaut Hall of Fame and the Rocket Garden are both fascinating, paying tribute to the work of NASA; an IMAX theater shows some great films, too. How easy is it to get there, and to get around? The Center is around an hour’s drive from downtown Orlando—and one that's well worth it. There’s a great bus tour if mobility or Florida heat is an issue, but apart from that, the facility is easy to navigate and everything is well signposted. What's the crowd like? The center is very much geared toward fans of space exploration and science, and it’s much more educational than many other Orlando attractions. However, there are enough interactive and ride-like attractions to keep things interesting for those with short attention spans." - Paul Oswell

Google
An amazing place packed full of history and exhibits. It's always been a place that's I've wanted to visit growing up, and it did not disappoint. Before the trip I booked and paid for the KSC tour, and it was 100% worth the $26 to go on it. There's a private bus that takes you to the launch sites and the area outside the shuttle assembly point that you don't get on the normal tour. We had a brilliant and knowledgeable tour guide that talked through everything whilst on the tour. The gift shop is large and has loads of brilliant gifts and souvenirs. They have all the patches of every launch on sale as well.

Google
Kennedy Space center is an awesome place to visit. It is clean and the displays are incredible. The eatery has delicious food and drinks. I loved it, you will too!

Google
Kennedy Space Center was definitely a cool experience, and there’s a lot of history and impressive displays that make it worth seeing at least once. That said, during our visit a surprising number of experiences and interactive activities were out of order or unavailable, which took away from the overall excitement. It’s still a solid one-time visit, especially if you’re into space or NASA history, but I wouldn’t say it felt fully operational or worth returning to anytime soon.

Google
We spent 6 hours there and loved it! My 23 year old could enjoy 6 more hours.

Victoria “Vicki” D.

Google
We really enjoyed our time at the Kennedy space center. We wished we were there for a launch. People were very friendly I think we could have done two days there. There is a lot to see. I definitely recommend downloading the app so you can get reservations for the vr experience. I didn't do the vr (I'm sensitive to lights sounds and strobes) but the rest of my family did The food ordering was fast and efficient Food was ehh but it's cafeteria food. We didn't have time for the imax. But we had a great time.

Lilah M.

Google
great atmosphere hardworking workers and really good space ice cream, got mooned by someone pissing in the bushes near the parking lot though. Wasn’t expecting to see 2 moons today, but otherwise it’s fun!

Rudy

Google
Very good experience, space technology amazing, you can learn knowledge

Google
We had a late flight out of Orlando and decided to make a stop here. This was definitely a highlight of our trip and I would recommend going early in the day! We first went onto the bus tour so we could get that out of the way. There is so much to see here and it was fun for all ages. Lots of awesome information and lot to see. You definitely need a whole day here just to see everything there is.

Sandra P.

Yelp
Best experience ever. Loved this place! Highly recommend. Took my 10 year old and he really enjoyed the simulators. They felt so real. He had a lot of fun.

Yelp
Since I was a little kid I always dreamed of being a pilot, or an engineer. I always loved anything related to the sky, the moon, the sun, planes, machines... Visiting this place was definitely a dream come true. This place is very educational and inspirational. There's so much to do, and see. There are different rooms and exhibitions even an outdoor garden. There's also a movie theater, and a live presentation. I have to say my favorite room is the Atlantis where they have the Space Shuttle "Atlantis" exhibited. Prices go from $60 to $120 which is not bad compared to the other parks around Florida. Only reason why I don't give this place 5 stars is the cafe. The food and service here was completely mediocre. I had shrimp tacos and each taco had literally 2 single shrimp each. TF!!! Everyone who had burgers, chicken or fish fingers also complained about the food being bad and it was very very pricey. So I definitely don't recommend eating here. Maybe bring some snacks and get some food after you finish. Other than that, great place for kids and adults.

Yelp
This was a pleasant day trip to the Space center. If you are remotely into space, rockets, or science you will really enjoy this place. I added an additional behind the scenes tour which was 2.5 hours where we took a bus to mission control, drove by the launch pads and vehicle assembly buildings and saw a few other historical sites. The price was a bit steep but it was a memorable experience. Highly recommend and the Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit is incredible and top notch. Would love to see them update more of the exhibits with current tech to match that one.

Yelp
They are still prioritizing wearing mask despite the new cec guidelines which is totally in favor to what Prefer. The museum are informative and interactive. We loved the thrill and build up going in Atlantis. My one year old loved the PLANET PLAY! Def a good place for kids to go in and be entertained for the whole day.

Yelp
Great store. Lots of interesting nasa and space related items to shop for. You can find everything from a fidget spinner to an astronaut costume. The people seem to love working there, and are extremely friendly and helpful.

Yelp
A must visit! Shockingly great time for someone who was not interested(sorry). Not expected much but still paid the full $50 admission (coupon available in coupon book) but was wowed through the whole experience. 1 day was not enough! Informative, inspiring & just fun. Admission includes lots of things. Food & drinks weren't overly priced. Got to touch a moon rock, toured the NASA facilities, experience the shuttle take-off, & gift-shops had fun items to consider. My favorite was the magnet set.

Yelp
** THIS IS A REVIEW FOR THE KSC STORE / GIFT SHOP, NOT KSC VISITOR CENTER ** What can I say, I am a big nerd and this was like Disney for Engineering Dads. So much history, such a great venue, I could not have been more excited to come to KSC... Then I went into the gift shop. The prices are simply ridiculous, even for a gift shop. Most everything you can find in this store can be bought online. My cousin works for NASA at KSC and told me that the gift shops are run by a 3rd party, not NASA. If that is true, I find this really upsetting. I hated paying $30 for $5 worth of plastic toys, but it was really upsetting to learn that all of the additional profit wasn't funding NASA. We deserve more / better - NASA deserves more / better. The gift shops and food courts are not up to the standards of the rest of KSC. Keep your money and spend it somewhere else.

Yelp
If you are a fan of NASA or science in general, you will love this store. The NASA store in the Orlando airport features seasonal items, clothing, space shuttle memorabilia, and toys. The store is medium sized, but there is truly something there for everyone. I came in to pass some time as I was waiting on a delayed flight out and ended up buying two t-shirts. The staff seem to like working there and answered all of my questions about the various memorabilia.

Yelp
Took my students here on a field trip last year...I have to say it is pretty much one of the most boring parks I've ever been to. The kids did enjoy themselves because of being on a trip, but seriously this place needs a major upgrade. They should add some more rides, update the existing sections , and the restaurant choices are so limited. With so many other options of things to do in the Orlando area, I do not recommend coming here unless you or your little one is very interested in space.
google avatar

Yelp
This location is a store located inside of Orlando International Airport (MCO). Apparently some of the folks who have written their Yelp reviews don't understand they have attached their review to the Airport Store - when in fact they should have attached their review to the Kennedy Space Center: http://www.yelp.com/biz/kennedy-space-center-visitor-complex-kennedy This is merely a small store - it does have some cool space oriented stuff. The one thing I was interested in was some of the NASA movies - but unfortunately they all are offered on DVD - NOT Blu-Ray I asked the young man working the store - he confirmed they were not available on Blu-Ray/HD.

Yelp
Anything NASA for the tourist you can get here. If you did not get a chance to go to KSC during your trip to central Florida. I am not sure why people post pictures of KSC for the store at the airport but hey. This is simply a gift shop for KSC at the airport.
google avatar

Susan K.

Yelp
Let's talk about the tolls. Holy smokes. We are staying just outside Orlando and it cost us approximately $11 in tolls to get there. That being said, it's an easy drive. For 4 adults and three children, it cost us about $300. It's expensive but oh so cool. We were there almost all day and couldn't do everything. We explored the rocket garden, the gift shop and did the bus tour. The bus tour is worth it. We learned so much (the drivers are hilarious). I was seriously overwhelmed when we saw the videos about the moon launch and we were able to view actual footage, see the real set up of the launch zone, etc. My mother (she's 64) said it was super neat to experience that again Not much for kids (10, 5 and 1) but we weren't able to do it all so there may be more. Definitely a learning experience.

Yelp
If you're traveling to Orlando just not only for Disney World but save time for NASA Kennedy Space Center too. Cheap price for great experience. I love universe I love outside of this Earth. It is magical which you can never touch, but this place you can lol

Yelp
FYI call to make sure it's going to be open due to it is a true working facility it said on there web page may be closed so please call.Make sure you get here early. We got here at about 9:55 and all the tours we wanted to do were all sold out and we really didn't have enough time to see everything. Wish we were here soon as it opened..
google avatar

Yelp
Although this page is for the store at KSC, I'd like to take a second and praise this whole establishment. I haven't had this much fun learning since an elementary school field trip. Let me start off by saying if you are visiting, you will want to go either at opening or shortly after and stay the entire length of operating hours. There is just so much to do! The Heroes and Legends exhibit is somewhat new from what I understand and was absolutely fantastic. My favorite aspect of Kennedy Space Center had to be the bus tour which is included in your ticket price but is conveniently tucked away and doesn't have to much signage. Luckily we took the chance and walked up to figure out what it was all about. We loaded almost immediately (good timing) and were taken out to the different launch sites to get an up close view, around the VAB, and out to another exhibit area. The center is great for literally ALL ages. Grab some souvenir patches or even a t-shirt from the largest space store while you're here.

Yelp
I read the reviews and budgeted half a day. Mission critical failure. In half a day we did the bus tour and the shuttle building, and could have spent much longer in both places. We missed so much, but got so much more out of it than I expected. At $210 for 4 adults it seems like a bargain after Disney world. That said the food really is horrible, so pack a lunch and spend the full day.

Sariah W.

Yelp
Lots of options with hi quality materials! Great service. They do get long lines at the end of the day though. Good souvenir options!
google avatar

Carol G.

Yelp
After reading a few reviews, I have to say that I was concerned about what I would encounter. I was blown away by the amount of things to do as well as all of the knowledge that I acquired. I highly recommend, and I can't recommend it enough, the bus tour. That was our first activity and the most interesting part of the trip (in my opinion). The bus tour was a backstage look into NASA and our guide Scott was absolutely spectacular. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I can't say enough, I was not disappointed at all and even invested in some souvenirs. Used our Orlando Go Pass for this which I also highly recommend.
google avatar

Jorge C.

Yelp
Had a great time with the family!! The kids enjoyed this place. They have fun things to do all around. The bus ride is awesome and just being able to see history right in front of you! And one of the biggest accomplishments for mankind. Enjoyed every minute of this place and will go again!
google avatar

Sherwin S.

Yelp
Our family had a fantastic time visiting on Thanksgiving. So much history! We loved seeing the Saturn V rocket, the Atlantis space shuttle, and learning about the space program. So educational. A must do. Amazing!
google avatar

Tom I.

Yelp
You can get very much everything NASA logo items here. And workers are very attentive but not in your face. Couple cons: More educational toys for kids and adults needed here. If NASA wants talented people to be interested in space program, try something small even at gift shops. Wearing logo hat won't make them interested in space or science. How about some cool chemistry set? All I could find was a water pressured rocket launcher, which was actually neat. Pricing...how does Nike T-shirt with nasa logo costs more than admission!? In fact, there were several things I wanted to get but they were cost prohibitive at the end, I still have to eat and drive home, yakow?
google avatar

Cristina G.

Yelp
This was a very exciting visit to the space center I would recommend this place to someone who is into things about space and it's also kid friendly if you want to bring little kids you could even have lunch with an astronaut but overall it was a great experience and I got to learn many new things
google avatar

Stacey K.

Yelp
First off - getting here. We were staying at the Orlando World Center Marriott. You have to drive through 4 tolls each way to get here. They range in price from $1.00 - $1.50. If you want to save time, rent a car with the EZPass. If you didn't then I suggest you have about $12 in quarters and go through the exact change lane - only takes coins. This will save time. The drive is beautiful and we saw a lot of wildlife on the way. I went with my mother-in-law and seven year old child. We were there half a day and it worked well. You could easily stay a day here but by the afternoon there were a lot of crying babies and toddlers. The experience of the tour and the informative videos were amazing. When is the last time we as a country have been so moved and united on a positive front. It was really neat to hear about the attempts to the moon and the actual learning in real time with the videos and then see some of the equipment used. This place is fantastic. There was a college robotics competition happening while there. I hope to revisit someday and see IMax movie theater. Also wish we had allotted more time to run by the beach. By the way - the store near the entrance is fantastic. What a fun collection of things. Take some money for that too!
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
Really cool place & plan to spend all day there is a lot to see and experience, take the bus tour & if your lucky watch them launch a rocket into space!
google avatar

Dana R.

Yelp
This has to be the best gift shop ever. Memorabilia and real NASA items to browse through and /or purchase. Could spend a lot of time here. I have traveled a bunch and have seen some run of the mill gift shops. I have never seen one as vast as this one, except for the shop at Trinity College in Ireland.
google avatar

Grant V.

Yelp
This is a one of a kind place that you don't just have everywhere. This place is awesome if you love space and space history! I came here with a few friends and we spent the entire day here doing everything we could. There is so much to see and learn if you've never been here before! First of all you have tons of outdoor exhibits of model rockets and other cool space stuff. It is simply amazing just standing next to some of the stuff and getting to experience the history right in front of you! Once you're done outside there are tons of inside exhibits. From everything from angry birds space for the kids to the history and more models of past NASA history. There are hours of stuff to do and I cant wait to come back to this amazing place! Also when you are there make sure you go to the IMax movies as they are awesome and such neat experiences you wont find anywhere else. They truly put on a show here and they'll entertain from adults to children. The shops here are also one of kind and something you won't find outside of this place. I could spend hours looking at stuff to buy in the unique shops. There is something here for everybody, I highly recommend making the trip here!
google avatar

Jay R.

Yelp
Loved the gear and souvenirs! I was surprised at first by the cheap 2 for $25 t shirts since Florida tends to be pricey with other attraction attire and theme parks. Was stoked to see the kids space suits. My daughters lost there mind over it! Personnel were friendly. No attitudes at all. You really get the impression that workers here enjoy their jobs in a sense which is great. We ended up buying a couple hats, stuffed animals for the kids and a few other items. Great experience and one of my favorite places in Florida. .

Michael E.

Yelp
Who doesn't like NASA. Lots to do and many things to see. Bring your kids and don't forget the dip n dots!
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
I have been here several times over many years and the store is still the same. It has some amazing keepsakes from many different NASA missions. The actual Kennedy Space Center is over an hour away from the airport, so this is a good alternative. If you visit Orlando Terminal A, do check this place out. NASA isn't flying any more manned space missions, so who knows how long this store will be open for.
google avatar

Oly C.

Yelp
If you're into space/ history this is a great experience. I only gave it three stars because I didn't feel it was worth $50/ adult and $10 parking. Highly recommend the IMAX movies and stimulated space shuttle launch. The rest is standing in long lines all day and eating overpriced fast food.
google avatar

Aviva S.

Yelp
This place was ok, Great on telling you about Nasa space programs and air shuttles and astronauts but not so good for people who have a hard time getting walking long distances. It is great if your into all the spaces stuff, you'll find it interesting. Good for families with older kids like 6 to 10 or older they can appreciate science and space more the a small child can. The bus tour is very educational with a video and you get to see many cool builds that held the rockets for launch and other cool stuff. The bus tour is not good for small children because they can't handle them selfs while the driver is talking also the parents can't do anything to keep them quiet! There is a very fun space rocket simulator ride you can go on. It really makes you really think your in training to be an astronaut. Over all its up to you if your into space and science or not so much.

Phil K.

Yelp
Well what they're doing right now is they're renovating so the gift shop is half the size and it has barely nothing in there and do not go during summer because you're waiting probably two hours to get onto the bus very disappointing very sad
google avatar

Carolyn F.

Yelp
They have a lot of souvenirs to choose from. Tour was great... learned a lot about the space center!
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
I am a NASA geek.My favorite thing there was that in 2030 there going to blast the first people ever to step on Mars and they are going to capture a asteroid to study it.Well that is what I learned at NASA !
google avatar

Mel B.

Yelp
wow what a fun store to kill time in before or in between flights they have astronaut toys, astronaut food, astronaut Snoopy, astronaut clothes, and lots of astronaut postcards the store is so cool it makes you want to visit The Kennedy Space Center if you haven't been
google avatar

Leticia D.

Yelp
Everything is nice you learn all about the astronauts when we went to visit a few years ago..food was not good unfortunately i think it's what they feed the astronauts, but anyway there is a lot to learn about the different space missions..it was very humid weather the day we went so go dressed in cool clothes and check for the best time of year before visiting Orlando, Florida. Lots of things to buy!
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
If you buy the history of the space shuttles and memorabilia this is the place for you you certainly don't see it anywhere. I've been to many airports in this is the only store of its kind definitely great to grab a few things for the kids

Harry C.

Yelp
I've visited 3 times and can't wait to go back. We took the grandkids on vacation and all 3 of them chose KSC over Universal Studios and the Everglades.
google avatar

Mey S.

Yelp
Such a great store to stop at before you clear through security in Terminal A. They have astronaut flight suits for the kids, space shuttle toys, autographed memorabilias, Astronaut Snoopy, and everything else you would find in a souvenir shop. My favorite find was their kitchen oven mitts in a left and right "glove" for $10!
google avatar

Janene H.

Yelp
This store is similar to the other touristy stores in the airport... Last minute, over priced gifts and trinkets. The employees are friendly and they have some full sized astronaut gear that makes for a great photo opp. There is an assortment of shirts, postcards, freeze dried "astronaut" food, coins, toys, etc. There are two stores and the airport- one by each of the security checkpoints.
google avatar

Angel D.

Yelp
Cool to see and had fun getting silly things at the gift shop... space food is interesting.. i feel bad for them haha
google avatar

Bobby J.

Yelp
Hubble 3D has forever changed my life! I can't believe that I walked into Don Thomas ;I mean how many people can say that they've walked into an astronaut?! Oh and warning, you may have a heart attack when you enter Atlantis simulator.
google avatar

H K.

Yelp
Well.......it is interesting and there is a lot to see. Atlantis will open the end of June 2013. Waiting on the bus each time is annoying on tour.

Sam O.

Yelp
Plan on staying the whole day because the tour and exhibits are so interesting. Did you know that the favorite car for astronauts is the Corvette? Nice photo opts, and educational for the kids. Watch out for big gators, 'cus this is a sanctuary for all wildife!
