Incredible limestone cave system hidden beneath Torbay, only accessible by guided tour, forming one of the area's most interesting attractions.
The limestone was laid down around 380 million years ago, and pushed up by tectonic activity around 80 million years after. Subsequent weathering formed the amazing network of caves that exist today. During the tour you'll get to see stunning stalactites and stalagmites within the caves.
The guide was excellent, delivering lots of information about the geology and history of the caves throughout the tour and keeping everyone engaged.
The tour isn't cheap, at £19.95 per adult (at time of writing), but it feels like good value considering the standard to which the site is maintained, the impressive lighting in the caves and the tour duration of almost 1 hour. These show caves are tastefully presented, with just a few props representing moments in history, the geological features being the main attraction.
I'd recommend booking in advance, as there's a small discount and it guarantees entry. When we visited on a wet August afternoon the caves were proving extremely popular.
There's plenty to do while waiting for a tour, with an on-site café, gift shop and small exhibition room providing background on the caves. Outside, the woodland trail is ideal for families. There's some onsite parking, and free roadside parking nearby.
