I visited the Kerala Secretariat to pay tribute to the late CM, Sri V.S. Achuthanandan. The solemn occasion brought me to this historic and beautifully designed structure. The Darbar Hall, with its elegant architecture, truly reflects Kerala’s rich administrative legacy. Surrounded by a well-maintained garden, the Secretariat stands as a symbol of the state's democratic heritage—once housing the old Legislative Assembly. The blend of colonial-era charm and functional governance makes it a remarkable place, both in purpose and presence. A visit here evokes a sense of respect, not just for leaders past, but for the enduring spirit of public service.

It is the administrative seat of the Kerala government and a prominent landmark in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram. It was officially built as the Durbar Hall of the erstwhile Travancore Kingdom by HH Ayilyam Thirunal in 1869. The structure was designed in Indo-Saracenic architecture with Roman and Dutch influences. After the formation of the State of Kerala, two additional buildings were constructed on either side of the Secretariat. While they were designed to remain faithful to the original architecture, the two sandwich blocks detracted from the Secretariat’s aesthetic appeal. The Secretariat is also a focal point for political activities, including protests, speeches, and demonstrations. However, its maintenance is inadequate, as numerous posters from political parties and other groups are frequently pasted on its walls, making the area look unkempt. Additionally, cleaning does not take place even when there is a court order.

Went to Trivandrum Secretariat. Big building, full of history and government power. Saw the hustle and movement—officers, files, people everywhere. Felt like the heart of the city’s decisions. It was a short visit, but nice to see the place in real. One more spot ticked off in Trivandrum.

The Government Secretariat is among the most magnificent and well- known structures in all of Kerala. It is located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city. People who visit the capital city are awestruck by this gigantic structure. It is the centre of government administration and houses the offices of ministers and important bureaucrats.Over 150 years old, the building's foundation stone was laid by His Highness ayilyam thirunal, the maharaja of travancore in 1865 and was completed in 1869.

Located in Thiruvananthapuram, the Kerala Government Secretariat serves as the administrative centre of the Keralan government and houses key ministries and administrative departments. It is the highest level of the state administrative hierarchy and provides the Kerala State Government with a location to exercise executive authority. The set of departments is referred to as the secretariat. Ministers serve as its political leaders, and government secretaries serve as its administrative leaders. Situated on Narmada Road in the centre of Thiruvananthapuram City, the Government Secretariat is a well-known landmark. Originally, the Secretariat complex was built as Travancore Kingdom's Durbar Hall.

The Kerala Government Secretariat, located in Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, is the administrative hub of the state, housing key ministries and bureaucratic offices. Constructed during the reign of Ayilyam Thirunal, Maharaja of Travancore (1860–1880), the main building was completed in 1869, designed by Walthew Clarence Barton in a blend of Roman and Dutch architectural styles with Palladian influences. Originally known as Huzur Kacheri, it was renamed in 1949. The Secretariat complex includes the central block with the grand Durbar Hall (now a State Ceremonies Hall), North and South Blocks, and two Sandwich Blocks added later. The building features a granite foundation, burnt brick superstructure, wooden flooring, and ornate chandeliers. The statue opposite the Secretariat, at Statue Junction, is of T. Madhava Rao, the Dewan of Travancore (1858–1872), who oversaw the building’s construction. Unveiled in 1893 by public subscription, it was sculpted by Edouard Lanteri with assistance from Raja Ravi Varma. Another statue inside the Secretariat complex is of Velu Thampi Dalawa, a historical figure known for resisting British rule, installed post-independence. The Secretariat remains a landmark of Kerala’s governance and heritage.
