"Discovering History in the The Key West Sponge Market Shop In the center of Mallory Square you can visit the Sponge Market Shop, which doubles as a museum that depicts the history of the sponging industry in Key West. In the early 19th century the Key West fishermen found sponges washed up on the beaches after storms. This discovery led to the sponging business in Key West. The sponges were collected from the shallow waters near the shore with a pronged rake. The sponges were then sorted and dried for the local market. Until 1849, these sponges were used and sold locally. That year spongers sent a sample of Key West's fine sponges to New York. By the late 19th century the New York market was huge, and Key West held a great monopoly of the sponge trade in the U.S. At one point, there were as many as 250 boats in the Key West sponge fleet. More then 1400 people were employed in the sponge trade. Around 1905, the Key West sponge beds were fairly depleted and the trade was taken over by the Tarpon Springs, Florida spongers. The Key West Sponge Market Shop carries many different sizes and colors of sponges, for great prices. There are also many other souvenirs available. I dawdled in this museum/shop for about an hour, as I was very interested in the pictures and history of this fascinating industry. The sponges I bought as gifts were very appreciated. If you like history and high quality goods, this is the place for you."

Google
Best place to buy sponges & souvenirs in the Florida Keys. Every time I visit Key West downtown I always come here. Excellent customer service by a gentleman named Rainel. They also have a shell warehouse next door. Only four stars because during my summer visits the heat & humidity inside the market make you feel miserable. They should install AC.

Google
Stopped here many times over the years. Great spot for some souvenirs or gifts.

Customer service there was terrible! The cashier Rothson cursed at me and was very rude.

Google
Typical tourist trap store. Lots of stuff you do not need.

This is one of the best places to shop in key west. I loved the natural sponges along with other souvenirs available in the store.... The staff is amazing and they helped us pack the glass stuff really well and they did not break throughoutour journey.......

Google
Neat little shop with lots of sponges to choose from and a brief history. It’s worth stopping by and getting a photo with the giant sponge man they have outside the shop. It is a very touristy shop with higher prices but that’s almost everywhere in the Florida Keys.

Google
Nice shop with a large variety of gift items but over priced, and that’s the reason for the 4 stars.

Yelp
Super super touristy. Of course it's a gift shop. It's filled with a bunch of Key West trinkets. I am sure you'll find the perfect souvenir here. I think they have the most variety of merchandise. I also think that they're quite affordable in comparison to other gift shops. They are very organized. Everything is divided by categories. For example, If you're looking for turtles, there's a turtle section. If you're looking for mermaids there's a Mermaid section, and so on. Something like a 4.

Yelp
Picture in your mind the MOST TOURISTY gift shop ever... if you did it correctly, you are picturing the Key West Sponge Market. Located in the heart of the area that is flooded with tourists... most people would think of Duval but you're not even close. Mallory Square seems to gather ALL tourists to watch the sunset and yeah, it's an amazing sunset and well worth the view... before and after though, the area adjacent to Mallory Square is bustling with all sorts of "what to do" and "what to see" (all in the vicinity where Front Street meets Whitehead Street). There are museums (Mel Fisher Maritime Museum and the Shipwreck Museum), to the Audubon House, to the Key West Aquarium, to Trolley Tours that have stops here to come and go, to the Waterfront Playhouse and countless bars, restaurants and shops.... And right there in the middle of all this action is the Key West Sponge Market. First thoughts of course should be, "if I need a sponge, this must be the place" and you'd be correct too... What tourists don't know, is way back in day, Sponging was a major industry here in Key West until the waters were depleted and the Spanish-American War scared the sponge boats (called hook boats) out of the area (to Tarpon Springs). BUT back to the Key West Sponge Market... they offer so much more (IF YOUR A TOURIST). You think what "stuff" can I bring home to remember my trip to Key West or a gift to rub it in someones that that you came here and left your friend's behind. Need a beer coozie, or a metal iguana to hang on an exterior wall, or salt/pepper shakers of a chubby couple in island attire, key chains, bottle openers, coconuts carved into caribbean themed characters, t-shirt sporting the southernmost point buoy, posters, maritime maps, shot glasses.... And lots of stuff with roosters... yes, we have tons of wild chickens/roosters all over the island and it makes sense that rooster souvenirs are front and center.... what I don't get is the flamingos here. Last visit had so many pink flamingo knick knacks; and yet, I have never seen a flamingo in Key West... never even heard of one here before. BASICALLY, if you need a souvenir, THIS IS YOUR PLACE !

Yelp
I bought cute T-shirt's, Hawaiian shirts for my husband and son. I also bought this awesome blue crab Christmas ornament but left it there by accident. I realized it at 4:56 and called the shop. Tammy who had been my cashier answered the phone. I was there 4 hours prior. I told her the ship leaves at 5:30 she said I will run it to you!!!!! I met her at the port security entrance and my perfect ornament now has an even better story. You will find this shop right beside and attached to the aquarium. Definitely spend your money there and tell Tammy Misty from Carnival Freedom sent you!!!!!

Just a place where dudes can rock. Key Wester style. Best place to find flamingo stuff.

Yelp
Really cute and quirky place. Very touristy. Lots of options for souvenirs. Not as much sponge as I expected (for better or for worse). Not a destination but a cool place to stop by.

Yelp
The haven for all tourists seeking souvenirs! Not only can you get your magnets/snowglobes/postcards etc., they also have...sponges! And not the Scrubbing Bubbles kind; these are high quality natural sponges. Key West of course has a historic sponge trade, and you can learn a little about it here. Be sure to get a picture with the sponge monster and other statues around the building! :)

Yelp
This is a one-stop shop for all sorts of Florida / Keys souvenirs. The selection is huge with pretty much every touristy thing to buy. Cookies and treats, shot glasses, mugs, things with your name on it, figurines, toys, art, knickknacks, etc. etc. etc. True to their name, they have a ton of sponges! They go from cheap, tiny, rough sponges to oversized, soft, plush sponges. The smaller and rougher they are, they cheaper they get, and you can get a little personal loofah-sized one for under $5 or spend a lot more for a pillow-soft sponge bigger than your head. There is also a sponge man outside for your picture pleasure. I ended up buying a bunch of sponges, a pirate ship, and a blown glass jellyfish for friends and walked out of there with what I considered to be a good price. The prices range from cheap to expensive depending on the item, though. This place is definitely super touristy. Not surprising, given it's location, but it's good for what it is and not a bad way to pick up something to remember your trip by or to give to your friends to make them jealous.

Yelp
Less emphasis on the sponge aspect and more on the typical touristy knick knacks you see at all the stores near the docks. But nice stuff than you'll find among Duval! No $5 t-shirts here.

Patrick M.

Yelp
This is your typical, tourist style gift shop. It has a tremendous amount of product to sift through. Overall, if you're in Key West, you should take a look here.

Yelp
I love the Key West Sponge Market so much! I go there every time I go to key west and buy several sponges so I can give them to my friends and family as gifts. Staff is always friendly, it is a bit on the pricy side but totally worth it since the sponges last so long if you take care of them and they clean anything and everything so well.

Yelp
This is basically your typical shell shop/tourist supply location specializing in sea sponges. I purchased a pair of sunglasses here that I later discarded because they were distorting my view of the world and were the cause of a headache. The one crazy bit worth visiting this particular location is the insane sponge man or sponge bear at the front of the shop.

Maria O.

Yelp
I visited the sponge market and did purchase a sponge and I must say I love this sponge. It is so so so soft, I love it. I wish I would have bought more but I plan to order them. The sponge man in front of the store is great for taking pictures with. Had a good time in key west and will return. Key West is a great get away for couples. Lots to do and take it easy.

Yelp
I am giving this place five stars because it had some lovely clothing for very low prices AND because they have great customer service. I purchased a dress there, brought it back to my home in Virginia, and then discovered a little problem with it. I called them, expecting to hear them tell me "Tough luck," but they were gracious and helpful and immediately sent me another dress. Very nice, very fair.
