Site of the World's First KFC – Salt Lake City, Utah - Gastro Obscura

"The origin story of KFC, a global fast-food juggernaut with more than 27,000 franchised restaurants in over 145 countries, is the stuff of restaurant industry legend. in 1940, Harland Sanders, the larger-than-life character who christened himself “the Colonel,” devised his recipe for pressure-fried chicken with a proprietary blend of herbs and spices. While Sanders may indeed have been from Kentucky, his Kentucky Fried Chicken didn’t really take off until a decade later in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1952, the Colonel franchised his recipe to Pete Harman, a local restaurateur in the city. A sign painter at Harman Café by the name of Rodney L. Anderson had the clever idea to refer to the product as Kentucky-fried chicken instead of Southern-fried to make it stand out. Within a matter of weeks, the restaurant was a runaway hit. Sanders and Harman remained close friends for the remainder of their lives and many credit the latter with KFC’s commercial success. Although the original Harman’s Café was demolished and rebuilt, the place still proudly proclaims itself to be the world’s first KFC. Know Before You Go Tour buses with passengers from all over the world routinely stop by the restaurant." - Martin, p pdvernichuk, Jdavi, M Martin, s stephendewoody, d delwood77, pdvernichuk, r rcharding, Jason Michael Walker, delwood77, stephendewoody

I dare say this is the best KFC in the entire United States! I know KFC isn’t considered high-end fast food by many people, but I suggest you visit this place — it might just change your mind. This location is so good, it almost doesn’t feel like a regular KFC. The staff here are incredibly friendly and even take the time to share the history of KFC with you. If you’re passing through Salt Lake City, make sure to stop by. You won’t regret it.

Google
Hands down the best KFC in Utah if you’re eating in and really enjoy KFC history! The manager Troy here was great and gave us some insider info on the history of KFC and his story. The theming here is great and it ties the atmosphere together. I love the OG suit and pressure cooker on display! Food here is typical KFC food and you know what you’re getting. The new cherry pie bites were yummy and pretty hefty. They remind me of toaster strudels without the icing and a bit more pastry. Can’t complain though! The staff was friendly. The tables were a bit dirty but half the restaurant was closed because it was already cleaned up on a not so busy night. Again I must say Troy made the visit here feel all worth dining in for! Will be back to dine in and enjoy a KFC themed night!

Google
This KFC serves up classic, flavorful fried chicken with speedy service and friendly staff. While some pieces can be a bit greasy, the taste and atmosphere make up for it. A solid spot for comfort food with a touch of tradition.

Google
This is the 1st ever original KFC. If you're in town, this place is worth the visit. Friendly customer service and all your favorite KFC menu. This place has original memorabilia from the original restaurant. It even has the cernals' original white suit. Big store with plenty of seats and 2 soda machines.

Google
This aint just the first KFC, it's THE BEST KFC! Personally I'm not usually much of a KFC fan, but this one does it best every time! Today I took the family out after running some errands, and we had the Chicken and Waffles meal (definitely recommend the KFC sauce). Our cashier was Theresa, and she did a great job and had some super recommendations. Osmar, The Manager, even checked on us personally to make that the meal was made just right! The restauraunt is spotless every time I visit! Which is perfect for the national Icon that it is. They have something of a museum set up to the founding of the restauraunt itself as well as the history of KFC as a whole. It even has one of the original suits worn by Colonel Sanders himself! Or, as I like to call him, "The Chicken Man". TLDR: -Great Food -Great Service -Clean Environs -The Chicken Man's Own Suit -Worth it EVERY TIME

Google
Greetings from Singapore! This is the very first KFC store! Food was amazing - chicken was freshly fried / prepared; grazy was great and don't forget the original KFC sauce. This store even sells merch - we managed to get a t-shirt; the store manager, Cohen, made our day as the tee was sold out but they had one in the display shelf and he took it out and sold it to us. All in all - a true 5-star experience and pity all KFC franchises around the world are not benchmarked against this very first and best store!

Google
1st kfc in the world. taste good, but the chicken size was quite small. added extra $5 deal after taking the photo.

Google
Staff is fantastic and the food is incredible. The chicken thigh I got was so juicy it dripped schmaltz when I bit into it.

Russ L.

Yelp
The manager Erick was great! He was very helpful and nice. Our food was hot and fresh.

Yelp
Every other time I order throught app to the 3890 s state location there are issues with the app. But this time I ordered 3 famous bowls. Only one looked like it should the other two literally didn't have the proper amount of potatoes, cheese. Literally the two bowls looked like they had half a scoop each for mashed potatoes. A few sprinkling of cheese. Very disappointed, this is not the first time this has happened. Will be hoing to another location in the future.
google avatar

Kh N.

Yelp
Ordered 8 variety pieces for pick up but ended up with 7 drumsticks + 1 thigh piece at home. Come on! Can't KFC staffs get my order correct for what I paid for?

Craig H.

Yelp
I had a 12 piece meal. The biscuits were bent and folded and not properly cooked. The cole slaw was dry and old and the extra crispy chicken was soggy and didn't taste like it should. The instant mashed potatoes were mediocre. That was the best thing I had. Never again!

Kayla S.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. The employee told me to drive around the building and park at the end of the side walk and pointed in that direction. Customer behind me got out of his car to scream at me that I was told to stop at the stop sign. (I don't know where he got his information, he was not behind me at the time or anywhere where he would have heard) Employee 100% said "END OF THE SIDEWALK" while pointing there. I was already past the stop sign when this instruction was given. Employee did not help the situation at all.

Yelp
What the hell has happened to KFC? I really use to enjoy KFC occasionally (couple times a year ) but they have taken "sucks" to a new level. Their worst store use to be 5900 So and State but this "original" location is worse. Stop by yesterday afternoon for the 4th of July and chicken just sounded good. Roll up and order a 8 piece crispy family combo. They tell me it will be 30 minutes! I said how, you sell CHICKEN? It's in the name! So I asked what they do have. Original. I said that's fine. We get up to the window, pay and they ask me to pull forward to wait. Why are we waiting? You said you had the original recipe?? We ended up waiting 15 minutes and when we finally got home, we had one breast, one thigh, 5 wings and 1 leg. Are you shitting me? I'm done with KFC. The food is horrible and the service even worse. This seems to be an on going theme. No chicken.

Yelp
received email apologizing from KFC Customer Care regarding my experience last week.. I spent 90 minutes tried my order 3 times, actually 4 times, my wife tried twice and so did I. Spoke with your manager on duty and he even called his GM, at least thats he told me and said call this number then i can help you. . I showed him my receipt and the charges to my account. Called your help desk #, and waited for 45 minutes before anyone picked up. So, no dinner ... too late to go somewhere else.. And all you can do for is apologize! REAL GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Your team could have, at the least, did something. Guess I need to post this "excellent" customer service .

Yelp
Just visiting another food landmark... Why is this KFC different from the other locations? There is a life-size bronze statue of Colonel Sanders outside next to another bronze statue of another man. So everyone knows Colonel Sanders already but the other statue is Pete Harman. Who?? He opened this first KFC franchise in Aug 1952. While it was in the State of Kentucky where Colonel Sanders first sold his chicken, it was here in Salt Lake City UT where the first KFC franchise was born. The awning above the entrance inside greets every guest with the following: "Welcome to the Home of the World's First Kentucky Fried Chicken" We didn't dine here. This was a quick detour to see a tribute to the faithful partnership of the Colonel and Pete. At the time of our visit the dining room was still closed to the public due to COVID-19. I would've liked to see more memorabilia inside. Drive-thru was open. Located in the corner of 3900 South and State Street -- smack dab in the middle of the Salt Lake Valley. Review #1809

Yelp
I use to go to KFC at least once a week for lunch. After getting several orders of meat with the broken purple veins in it and the lousy grease flavor of the cooking process, I gave up. I didn't go to KFC for over three months. Then one Saturday while out running errands and having a craving for fried chicken, I gave KFC another try. I ordered a two piece meal. I got a wing and a leg. Usually when I have ordered the two piece meal, I would get a leg and a thigh. The flavor of the meat was so bad I ended up trowing it out. I will no longer go to KFC. I can't believe that a company such as KFC will just stand by and do nothing to increase the quality of their product. It's as if they just don't care any more. I work to hard to earn the money that I get and will no longer waste it on KFC.

Yelp
Great food. Never been to a KFC with buffet. They had the buffet stocked. The staff was super courteous. All you caN eat baby!! What was cool is that you could try things you wouldn't normally order. I had the green beans and peas, just because. Big layout of the building with lots of history to read about. It was super fun and much more fun than your normal KFC.

Jack F.

Yelp
World's First KFC, amazing food, average but not bad customer service, and extremely quick! The ambiance had to be the best part being the first ever KFC!

Bruce D.

Yelp
not even close to correct ordered original legs and thighs got 8 legs extra crispy chicken
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Craved a couple of chicken little sandwiches. One buffalo. One Nashville hot. There was no sauce on either sandwich. Plus they were not warm. I watched the crew joking around before someone handed me my order. You've lost a good customer.
google avatar

Yelp
I've got to say that fast food isn't always amazing and I've had a friend that worked for KFC and she said it's disgusting there. However, I must say that I've had food from here more times than I care to admit since COVID, and the food has been yummy and comforting. Yes, I know it's not the healthiest, but it's delicious and prepared in a manner that makes me feel good to eat it. Keep it up!

Yelp
I love fried chickens and this location has all you can eat Kentucky fried chicken! I heard that this location is the first KFC in the states and that's why they do a buffet. This outside has the statures of KFC grandpa and the inside has like awards or frames. Not sure what they are but they look fancy. The booths look nicer than other locations too. The all you can eat is only $9 something (under $10), which I think is a really great deal! They mainly have 4 types of chicken to choose from: original, extra crispy, baked, and grilled ones. They also have sides like corns, mashed potatoes, gravy, carrots, and wedge fries. They have more sides too but I don't usually get them so I don't comment too much. They keep the chicken enough for people to grab. I love that they don't have a time limit for the all you can eat. I tried bringing my laptop finishing my essay while eating for like several hours. The quality of the food is not any worse than if you just order them. You can get a cup for fountain drinks and you can get as much refills as you want. So if you like fried chickens and want as much as you want. This place is definitely recommended.

Jacob G.

Yelp
The original KFC! Yes! Awesome! Love the Harman Cafe sign outside and the statue of the colonel! As the for the food, same as always lol. Love me some original recipe! Yum!
google avatar

Angie E.

Yelp
This place is terrible! Never been so disrespected in my life, totally ignored by 3 employees. Walked in to place an order, can only go to the drive thru or online. Blatantly ignored us, after the first employee informed us register inside are closed. Place was disgusting including door handles. KFC prices have increased 40%, so I am expecting the service, food, and amenities to reflect this large increase. But there are only 3 employees and no inside dining. So it appears that you are just greedy. Disappointed in this franchise, you should have your franchise revoked!
google avatar

Kirk T.

Yelp
I tried the beyond chicken and what a joke I needed a knife just to cut the nugget and kfc says this is for a limited time that's a good thing you lost my business
google avatar

Lucy C.

Yelp
The first KFC in the States. Amazing interior decors, the tables and walls were covered with historical facts of KFC. Souvenirs like T-shirts, aprons were available for purchase as well. There is also a buffet option available. Average service over the counter. The original recipe was delicious and well spiced. However the rest of the dishes tasted quite bad. Taste: 7/10 Presentation: 6/10 Service: 7/10 Ambience: 10/10 Value for money: 9/10
google avatar

Yelp
KFC Buffet?! = Yay! KFC Buffet FOOD = what the hay?! Here's how you do it: walk in, pay for the adult (or kid) buffet plan, claim your seat, then get up and go to the corner for some buffet looking setup with KFC food in it. Like I said, food is meh (soggy fried skin on the chicken, stale or plain tasting vegetables, artificial/chemical tasting apple pie, and firm/tough mashed potatoes), slow refill time on food, and no waiter service.. .. anywho, still nice to say I've been to the world's first KFC, and ate at their buffet. :)
google avatar

Angie M.

Yelp
If I wasn't late and I didn't have to drive from point a (Magna) to point b (Holladay), I would not have pulled into the drive-thru. My instincts said to go inside, and from now on, I will listen. We were in the drive-thru line for thirty minutes. The person on the intercom took my order no less than six times. I will never eat here again.
google avatar

Arlene C.

Yelp
All my expectations for a great KFC meal. Restaurant was clean, service was great and personnel were friendly. Food was hot & delicious. Everything on menu was available. (Unlike some I've been to) This is KFC VERY FIRST restaurant so lots of memorabilia and souvenirs. It also has an all you can eat buffet. Loved it!
google avatar

Aidan H.

Yelp
This place got good food! I really like the chicken. The food is really good! It's more of a dinner to me lol.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
I always felt KFC was a ripoff, the few times I've eaten there, and since COVID I've felt they care about customers less than ever. PC is their priority now. I couldn't sit down if I wanted to.

Valen G.

Yelp
if i could give it 0 stars i would. i went there and ordered a chicken tender box. they gave me the wrong sides, no sauce and the tenders were super old and hard. i didn't realize any of this til i was already home never going to this place again.
google avatar

Darre T.

Yelp
Rude workers. Rude assholes here. Soda machine broken during the hottest day and not bothering to fix it sad. They tried to give milk out when we asked for soda. Foods cold. Gross place.
google avatar

Helen H.

Yelp
The World's First KFC is here :) You can see Sanders' uniform and all those old stuffs. Probably worth to check it out. But the food is average. The spicy wings are just not good, taste like fried bread.
google avatar

Aly Scarlett W.

Yelp
Way overpriced. I paid $10+ on their "Big Box," only to not even get full. And for $10, I may as well have gone to a restaurant.

Gracelyn H.

Yelp
I can't believe this place is still in business. It may be the first, but it's certainly the worst. The handed me the wrong order, then asked for it back, and gave it to another car. Gross. The over charged me, gave me items I didn't ask for and then when I asked for a refund they refused. Rude and condescending staff. Not to mention the whole place is under construction. When you look through the order window you see machines covered by plastic tarps, makes you question the cleanliness of the establishment. Outside is covered in trash and old booths, computers, TV's, etc. DO NOT GO HERE.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
5 stars not for the food.. Didn't try any food but it's KFC mehh But amazing place as far as the history and the artifacts inside.. I was impressed how everything was displaced.. Amazing that it all started here and not in Kentucky

Trina H.

Yelp
Why is it that when you go to kfc a very large percentage time you hear " we are out of chicken, it will be a 15 min wait and only regular no crispy"..... I have never been told this at Popeyes, I rather have kfc but I have give up on the management of kfc. I am leaving out so many other faults I have with kfc because why does anything they do matter if they don't have chicken in the first place.

Sione H.

Yelp
Literally they never get my order right. After waiting for 20 minutes for a 8piece meal they gave me 3 pieces of chicken.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
I hate to give this review but this location disappoints me 80% of the time. And I think it stems from a few specific problems. -poor service -VERY understaffed (this is probably why the service is bad) -the dinner buffet closes at 7pm. Yes, the dinner buffet closes at DINNER time. Honestly I'd forgive 1 and 2 if the buffet was convenient at all. The best thing about this location is the buffet, no other KFC does this. Personally I think $10 is a bargain but it's so inconvenient. I hate play the "this location should hold the standard for all other stores" buuuuuut it's true.
google avatar

Isabelle S.

Yelp
This is the WORST "fast food" experience I've probably had ever!!! I arrived in the drive thru at 7:10 and here I am at 7:42 STILL sitting 3 cars behind the window, this is RIDICULOUS. I feel bad for management because they FAILED at training their employees, I have a friend who used to work here and they said all the employees do is mess around.. makes sense given I've been waiting in the drive thru for almost 45 MINUTES, absolutely ridiculous.. I don't even want the food anymore Customer service made me lose my appetite. My advice to future customers, AVOID KFC ON 3900 S AT ALL COSTS!!! I am so disappointed I want my money back for my cold food that I waited forever for!!!
google avatar

Phil M.

Yelp
Chicken tasted wierd and homeless trashed the bathroom The manager was a nice guy and handled things correctly.
google avatar

Vida A.

Yelp
Update Time! Unfortunately this place has gone down hill. Sad since its the very first location and they have tons of memorabilia. The staff is lazy and running around with there heads cut off, hahaha, get it?! Bad jokes aside this place is filthy from buffet bar to bathrooms to dining room. The buffet is never stocked. And they keep the place freezing. Seems there is no management. And they are always out of chicken. More annoying eating here, try another location.
google avatar

Samuel O.

Yelp
FIRST & LAST TIME ILL BE GOING THERE: Maybe this KFC had its better days a while back but now (2018) , it's horrible me and my wife decided to go there for the buffet & right of the bat we could notice that it's under management , the bathrooms are a not being attended to. The so called "Buffet" is not what it used to be $23.75 for both of us & all there is available to get was chicken , corn and mashed potatoes We heard other customers complain too Just decided to get refund and go somewhere else..
google avatar

Kay P.

Yelp
I rarely crave fried chicken but when I do, KFC is down the street. I opted for the 8 piece family size meal which includes 2 large sides. If you do not request to swap your sides for something other than mash potatoes and mac and cheese- that's exactly what you get. I swapped my potatoes for coleslaw because I'm just so darn healthy right? I'm sad KFC discontinued corn bread and I wish they would bring it back because their biscuits just don't do it for me.
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
The food is decent but the customer service is super bad. We got served by Cindy. We paid for our food but she made us feel like we begged for it. She had an attitude and didn't even smile. Not recommended!!!
google avatar

Judy P.

Yelp
I decided to try the buffet, big mistake! They only have thighs and drumsticks on the buffet. The food is lukewarm. They make you go to the counter and get a new plate and you only get one at a time. I don't like my food touching, at all. (I have food rules and I don't like my corn water to run into my mashed potatoes. Gross!) So this was a pain in the butt. The soda is flat, I've asked them to change it. I went and tried it again, it's still flat. So I paid for a soda cup that I wound up just putting water in.. Booooo...
google avatar

Violet W.

Yelp
Drive through attendant was kind and courteous. And then when I asked for some cole slaw after he'd rung me up he handled it like a pro - even though I know it is annoying for customers to do. He told me if I filled out a survey I could get it for free - so sweet. Although, when I went to do so it took me to a site where as best as I can make out is a data collection ad generating site which is very lame. KFC has the ability to create a survey generator on their site without ads or data collection if they really wanted to know how people feel. So, it seems this is a way for them to make money which is unfortunate. I did promise a review, so here I am giving it. I always appreciate the enthusiasm of KFC employees in a world where employees tend to think its fine to let their bad moods out on customers. Thank you!

Yelp
This as by far the worst dining experience in SLC. We paid for the buffet and walked up to buffet which didn't have any white meat on it. I walked back up to the register and asked if we could get some white meat. As I was waiting the manager yells at the server "it's a five breast limit, it's a five breast limit!" Our server explains to the manager " they only asked for three altogether " Well it goes downhill from there... the chicken they served was so dry it broke the plastic fork they gave us. The salad bar was not well stocked and most of the hot items being lukewarm at best. No ice for my soda which aggravated me because the soda wasn't really cold either. There was no jelly for the biscuit and only some soybean butter concoction which I refused to ingest. Overall, we haven't been to a KFC in years and should have left it that way. Sorry if this spot is legendary for being the first franchise because the service and food are no longer top notch like it used to be.
google avatar

Edwin A.

Yelp
Three stars because it's KFC and I'm not big into fast food or fried food but when I do have a craving than Fried chicken is my preference. It's cool because it has accessories from the time they originally opened and because it's the first KFC ever. I stood in a 4 people line and it did take a lot longer than normal which was rare. The line build up to 10 people by the time I was up. My transaction took like 3-4 minutes which is a lot for only ordering a thigh. Maybe they had an off day? Idk I'm from out of town and just came here because it's the worlds first and to "say" I been there and it's a Utah thing to do. Chicken was pretty good though! Time to hit the gym.
google avatar

Joe N.

Yelp
This location is less than a mile from my home so I go here maybe twice a year only because it is convenient. The food is pretty much like every other KFC in the world (and not even close to being my favorite fried chicken chain) but the service is so sloooow. I certainly don't recommend this place unless you want to wait 10 or 15 minutes for your order. Fast food by definition should be fast. Mediocre food and mediocre service.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
The entire restaurant was a mess. No clean tables, food and trash on the floor. I ordered the buffet and on the first round the buffet was mostly empty and the food that was there was NOT fresh...(the peas looked like the dehydrated ones in Cup-O-Noodles. I didn't taste them). There was still no chicken, biscuits, or coleslaw. The carrots and corn were cold, and they were STILL SELLING buffets to unsususpecting customers when I left an hour later full of mashed and gravy which was the only thing kept full. I wish I was making this up.
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
The last time I ate here was last week and everything was great! 5 stars for sure. But tonight not so much. I was told I would have to wait 5 mins for my chicken strips which was fine. When I got home (which I'm 2 mins away) my potato logs were old tasting. I feel like they had those ready to go and sitting there while my chicken was taking 5 mins. And then I got like 2 1/2 pieces, not 3. The one was the size of a .50 piece. Plus no butter or honey with my biscuit. No napkins or silverware either. Hopefully next time will be better.
google avatar

Season L.

Yelp
My friends and I come here because this is the FIRST KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN IN THE WORLD!!! Most important thing is they have BUFFET and it's really CHEAP! How wonderful thing for 5 young people who are in Road Trip and very hungry. Beside food, we also can realize the history of KFC. I think It's really worth it to come here!!!
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Went through the drive-through with a very specific order of 5 tenders meal replace ing the potatoes and gravy With coleslaw. Pull to the window got told we had to wait on tenders and to pull around to the front. Wait about 8 more minutes they came out my order decided to check it before pulling away And realized my order was Incorrect thereby defeating the whole entire purpose of going through the drive-through. So I went in and explained of the discrepancy to the cashier who gave me a order Of coleslaw and told me that she couldn't take the other stuff back I simply explained to her TF you want me to do with It I am in my car Period I Give it one star because A I should not have to come in after going through the drive-through And B I should not have had to go back in
google avatar

Austin S.

Yelp
I was craving KFC after not having it for 7 months. YES. I just went through the drive-thru and got a three piece meal- I got 3 drumsticks-original, 2 orders of mashed potatoes, 2 biscuits, and a pepsi. I was fully ready to get my fat kid on. Ordered, pulled up, paid, got my food super fast. There were 2 teenage-ish boys at the window and they were both sweet as can be and very nice. I got home a bit later and threw down. Amazing, everything was hot and super tasty. I'm really happy with this KFC.

Yelp
Good chicken bad poor horrible app. No English no us version. Do you think Americans don't eat chicken
