The 12 Best Things to Do in South Africa in 2025

"On the border with Botswana in the north, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is famed for its black‑maned lions and offers a very different, more arid safari experience than the eastern parks." - Matthew Kepnes

Botswana: a classic African adventure - SilverKris

"Straddling an international border, this park is characterized by iconic red sand dunes, arid desert habitats and species adapted to dry conditions; it also provides opportunities for cultural exchange with indigenous San communities and offers stark, elemental wilderness experiences distinct from the continent’s wetter reserves." - SilverKris

What a beautiful place this is one of those places that must be on someone's bucket list, roads are a bit corrugated at some places, so make sure your tyre pressure is at 160 for a better drive.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is an absolute treasure for anyone seeking an authentic and unforgettable wildlife experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the warm hospitality of the staff, who were not only friendly and helpful but also genuinely passionate about the park and its conservation. The park itself is a stunning expanse of unspoiled nature – red dunes, vast open skies, and endless silence broken only by the calls of the wild. Wildlife sightings were incredible: we saw lions, cheetahs, oryx, springbok, and more – all in their natural environment, completely free and undisturbed. The raw beauty of the park makes every moment feel special. What makes Kgalagadi so unique is how it offers a true escape from the noise of the modern world. It's not just a game reserve – it’s a place where you reconnect with nature and feel completely immersed in the wilderness. Highly recommended for anyone who loves the outdoors, values conservation, and wants to experience Africa in its purest form. We’ll definitely be back!

Bucket list trip! Saw plenty of gemsbok, springbok, blue wildebeest, giraffe etc. Sadly no cats, but that's OK. I see them elsewhere.

An Unforgettable Escape to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park My recent visit to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was nothing short of spectacular. This park is an absolute gem and a must-visit destination within South Africa. We thoroughly enjoyed our 7-night stay, though I must admit, it wasn't nearly enough to experience the full grandeur of the Kgalagadi. For anyone planning a trip, I would strongly recommend allocating at least 10 days. To truly immerse yourself, plan to camp for longer periods (4-5 nights) at key rest camps. This allows you to deeply explore the unique ecosystems and wildlife of each area without feeling rushed. There is simply so much to see and discover throughout this vast park. One of the most delightful aspects of our visit was the incredible community feel among the visitors. It warmly reminded me of the good old days in Kruger National Park (back in the late 70s through the early 90s). People would wave as they drove by, stop to share news of a sighting, or strike up a friendly conversation at a picnic spot. In the camps, fellow travelers would casually wander over for a chat. This created an absolutely amazing and welcoming atmosphere that made our experience even more special—a sense of community that, in my experience, is sadly not as common in Kruger anymore. I've included a park map and layouts for a couple of the camps, as I found this specific information frustratingly difficult to locate online before making our bookings. I hope it proves helpful to others planning their adventure! Without a doubt, the Kgalagadi has captured a piece of my heart. I am already dreaming of and planning my return visit to this incredible wilderness.

I really enjoyed it here. If I have to choose my favourite wild animal here it would be all the animals so I can't really choose. I always wake up to a beautiful sunrise every morning. My family and I camped in the wilderness, it was really lovely. I will admit it was scorching hot every day. We all enjoyed every moment. Some of us got totally wet from the storms we had. That was a memorable moment.

This is a unique park, unlike any of the others that I have been to in South Africa. If you want to experience the Kalahari, this is the nature park for you. A 4x4 vehicle is not recommended, but there are patches of loose sand. There are many kilometers of corrugated roads, and it is advised that you deflate your tires to at least 1.5 bar. If you want to tow something, you must ensure that it is a proper off-road trailer as those roads have no mercy! Nevertheless, it is a beautiful park with friendly staff, clean and upkept facilities, different species of animals.... - a must visit!

Sanparks Kgalagdi has to be one of the best run organisations in South Africa. Super organised, clean, efficient camps run by well trained and friendly staff. The shops at Nossob, Mata-Mata and 2 Rivieren are well stocked with fresh food and other groceries. (Slow) wi-fi is also available for purchase at these three camps. It goes without saying that the environment and animals are incredible. If you need peace and quiet, and lots of nothing, this is your ideal spot. Can't wait to go back! Note: we weren't that impressed with Rooiputs (Botswana side). Difficult and complicated to even book our accommodation. And, expensive!
