How to Plan the Perfect Luxury Trip to Bhutan, According to a Travel Expert

"A riverside hilltop chorten visible from hiking trails and cited as the backdrop for a memorable 'surprise breakfast' spot in Punakha — recommended as an ideal location for early-morning contemplation and a scenic meal (the write-up even pairs it with croissants for an evocative image)." - Mark Lakin Mark Lakin Mark Lakin is a renowned hospitality brand strategist, luxury travel expert, keynote speaker, fine art photographer, seasoned corporate lawyer, and more. Medium difficulty trek to reach the destination. The beginning is where the river rafting starts . The track is through various paddy fields and uneven terrain. Once you reach the destination, you have a breathtaking view of the river in the path where river rafting is done. The temple is so exquisitely designed and has wonderful paintings and sculptures and the history is also very interesting.

🏞️ Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten — A Masterpiece Above the Clouds Perched high above the Punakha Valley, Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is a stunning example of Bhutanese art, architecture, and spiritual devotion. The short hike through rice terraces and pine forests to reach the chorten is as rewarding as the breathtaking view from the top. Every detail inside reflects intricate craftsmanship and deep spiritual symbolism. From the summit, the sweeping panorama of the Punakha River and valley below feels truly heavenly.

A great temple on top of a hill, the hike to reach the temple is beautiful, passing through the rice field with a stunning view. Taking pictures is not allowed in the temple, but you are all allowed to go to the top of the temple - enjoying the stunning view and taking pictures.

An enjoyable little hike to reach the place, fantastic views both along the way and at the temple.

This temple has amazing views if you walk up to the highest level of the main temple. Beautiful panoramic views of the distant mountains with fields of rice and vegetables in the foreground, alongside the banks of Mo Chhu river. The ornate carvings and intricately carved statues are testament to Bhutanese skilled craftsmen in the past. Equally excellent is the maintenance of the temple and its statues. Very peaceful and serene. I highly recommend that tourists visit this temple.

Reaching Khamsum Yulley Namgyal is not easy. Only way to reach here is by trekking. Less than one hour trekking is worth to reach the top. The journey to top also enjoyable, you will see local crops, cows, water flow sounds, beautiful scenery, fruits vendors. The top of the hill is spectacular, very few reach here. You can see large statues of Vajra Kilaya. This temple was constructed by Rajamata - mother of current His Majesty for his well being. There are paid wash rooms on the top. You can offer butter lamp 🪔 prayer @₹/Nu 50.

When you stand on the roof of this chörten, you begin to understand why conquering mountain peaks is prohibited in Bhutan. True life lies in the right valley, not on the cold, lonely peak. Real victory is not about feeding the ego, but about making the right decision for the well-being of the entire community. Shangri-La is the chosen valley — guarded from cold winds and the hunger of winter.

This is a nice hilltop temple near Punakha. Obviously photos are not allowed inside the temple, but on the top floor (I forget if it's the 3rd or 4th floor) there is an outside platform where you are allowed to take photos of the surrounding scenery. But the best part of this temple isn't the temple itself, but the walk here. It's uphill for sure, but it's a pretty gradual climb in elevation and the path is well maintained. Should be doable for anyone in halfway decent physical condition. The walk is enjoyable, and the views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below are great. Definitely recommended for those willing to do a little walking.
