"A little less than 100 miles southwest of Hanoi, the Pu Luong Nature Reserve opened in 1999 and features limestone mountain ranges running along two sides, separated by a valley that is technically not part of the reserve but is often lumped in with it for ease of reference. Travelers often liken this destination to the hill station Sa Pa, much farther north, but without its crowds. At Pu Luong and in the adjacent valley you will encounter fantastic scenery, with mountain ridges, terraced rice fields, and small settlements boasting thatched homes. Expect wonderful hiking and the chance to see the houses on stilts built by the White Tai and Muong ethnic groups. If you want to experience the tranquility of the destination at night, make a reservation at one of the homestays offered in the area."

Pu Luong Nature Reserve is a true hidden gem in northern Vietnam—far less crowded and much more authentic than Sapa. The landscape is stunning, with endless rice terraces, lush mountains, and small traditional villages where life still follows a slow and genuine rhythm. Unlike Sapa, Pu Luong hasn’t been overwhelmed by mass tourism. You can enjoy peaceful hikes, interact with local ethnic communities, and take in breathtaking views without being surrounded by tour buses and souvenir shops. If you’re looking for natural beauty, tranquility, and a more local experience, Pu Luong is the perfect alternative to Sapa. Absolutely recommended.

Amazing and relaxing scenery. 4-5 h away from Hanoi but the roads leading to Pu Luong are very good. Hotel structure is excellent , and tours can be arranged. The location still holds the calm and preserved beauties of countryside. Not crowded.

Not knowing what awaited at each bend, we travelled through the reserve on motorcycles. It's well preserved and very green. A must visit when you are in these parts.

Serene, tranquil, and beautiful area. Although the local economy may benefit from it, I hope tourism doesn’t spoil the area.
