How to spend a day in Balik Pulau, Penang - SilverKris

"A beachfront Thai restaurant that remains busy despite the area's remoteness; diners are advised to request a table on the sand and can expect lively, flavourful dishes such as spicy stir-fried clams, sambal prawns and steamed fish, ideal for a relaxed seaside dinner." - Dana Ter

Google
Amazing food. We loved it. We found this beautiful place while traveling on 101 and thought of trying it out. Food was just delicious. We ordered tom kho soup and red curry and basil fried rice. All made Vegan. They can make anything vegan even if menu is telling fish sauce. Delicious food. One of the best Thai restaurants I have had

Google
We're visiting Brookings and decided to give this restaurant a try. We ordered fried calamari, chicken curry, honey duck and duck fried rice. The calamari was great. The curry came with a bowl of rice. The rice has a strand of hair so we told the waitress. She took it back and all was good. We ordered an extra bowl of rice and that also has a hair embedded in it. This time, we did not even bother letting the waitress know. The food were delicious but very unsanitary to find hair on the rice, twice. We should've taken a picture of it. If you'd like to try this place, keep your eyes on the food. They should wear a hairnet. Hence, I'm giving the food 2 stars because of that.

Google
The water was one of the best I have ever had. It was fresh, crisp, and so cold. The glacier-fresh water might have drawn us in at first, but the food and company kept us like no other and the server made us laugh the entire time. Highly recommend and hope everyone will stop by to enjoy this experience like we did! :)

Google
Superb Food! We were passing through and asked a local law enforcement officer a good place to eat, and he was spot on! A must try.

Google
I ordered crispy rolls for an appetizer. They were the bomb. Drunken noodles for entree. The drunken noodles came out piping hot. I had to wait for them to cool off. Those noodles left the pan onto the plate and in front of me lickety split. Fresh. I asked for spice level of 2 and it was just right. The staff were great. DEFINITELY EAT HERE IF YOU WANT GOOD THAI FOOD!

Google
As someone who lived in Thailand for a while. This is a great Thai food outside of Thailand! Large portions for the price! Got pad krapow & pork belly stir fry with Chinese broccoli.

Google
We have been going there for more than 6 years ever since we discovered it.. and since we don’t live close near there whenever we go! And the food is ALWAYS AMAZING!! My favorite is the crispy duck and his favorite is the sizzling platter.. We love the staff and the environment!! Thank you Cyrus and your staff for always making sure we are comfortable and taken care of!! The Best!!!

Pina

Google
The food is nothing special — the pad Thai tasted like noodles with tomato sauce. Definitely not worth the hype.

Yelp
We were starved by the time we arrived and dinner was OUTSTANDING!!! Albert was very patient, friendly and attentive. We ordered the crispy spring rolls to start. Then a shrimp Phad Thai, crispy basil fried chicken and phad see ew. The flavor, spice and portions were excellent. Wish we lived closer cause we'd be here weekly!

Yelp
*Coconut Prawns- over cooked and heavily salted *Vegetables smelled like old oil *Beef- Rubbery *Tom Kha Soup- They put parsley thinking it was cilantro Really? All not good- Won't be back. Big waste money

Yelp
First time here based on our local relative's recommendation. We picked up our order of noodles, tofu & veggies, fried rice, and mango dessert to go. We are from the Bay Area and like spicy food, so asked the helpful staff how high we should go on the 0-5 scale (she said 2 is medium spice) , so tried level 3 for the tofu & veggies and level 4 for the noodles. Both dishes were enjoyable spicy, but not overpoweringly so. We don't think we need to try level 5 spicy next time, as it would be too much. The inside seating was cozy and there is an outdoor patio that would be nice to dine on in the summer.

Yelp
Ordered their vegetable pad Thai. It's really good and plenty of serving. Great service from staff. Playing great music to enjoy your meal.

Yelp
Great Thai food in an unexpected place! The curry and cashew and crispy pork were excellent.

Yelp
Super yummy food in a relaxed environment right off the highway! The menu is huge and has everything you are craving. Definitely worth the stop in Brookings. Entree is Enough for two or leftovers for sure.
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
The best green curry I've ever Had!!! the flavor is so robust yet lite and creamy makes you keep going back for Spoonful after spoonful! Packed with veggies I also got the crispy rolls and a Thai tea which were both delicious. Service is quick and attentive it's cozy inside with booths and tables. I was recommended this place while on vacation here in Oregon when I come back this will be my go to spot!
google avatar

Cullen M.

Yelp
Would definitely recommend. We were staying at Harris Beach Campground for the night and wanted something to bring back and eat at the camp. We got an order of the drunken noodles and chicken teriyaki to go. The amount of food per order was enough for 2 meals and quality was top notch. Much better than expected for the very reasonable prices (especially in todays food service industry). Got both at a level 3 spice and it was perfect if you like spice but don't want fire. Order was ready in less than 10 minutes from when we called it in. It will be our go to spot anytime we're in Brookings.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely delicious Thai food!! I had the Pad Woon Sen with Shrimp. We ordered food for there and to bring home and an appetizer all of it was amazing. The service was excellent also!! Highly recommend Khun Thai!!
google avatar

Gordon L.

Yelp
Ripped off! $15.00 for curry flavored rice! Terrible terrible unauthentic as all hell. You can feed slop to people here in this town and they would call it gourmet... no one here knows what real Thai cuisine is... think about it before you choose Kuhn Thai
google avatar

Afrin K.

Yelp
Solid Thai spot in Brookings! Ordered their basil fried rice, Tom Kha soup, panang curry and crab wontons all for $56 which is relatively affordable. The ambiance is basic and the service is good, but the food is excellent and beaming with flavor. Spice ranges from 1-5, so ordered their 2 = medium spice. Highly recommend if traveling along the southern Oregon coast and looking for a solid Thai food spot!
google avatar

Mavinelle A.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious! I highly recommend this place. The ambiance is also great, and the space is very spacious. The service was excellent as well! Please try the seafood claypot. It was amazing!!
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
I love this place . They have a really good menu and make everything on it well. So if you want curry or soup or something exotic they probably have it. And they will adjust the spice levels for you
google avatar

Bob M.

Yelp
They used to be the best restaurant in Brookings but recently they have become one of the worst. Small portions, bland food, poor quality. Not at all as good as they used to be. Extremely disappointed.

Sudiptaa B.

Yelp
Good food bad service. The crab fried rice and larb salad was delicious. The service really needs improvement
google avatar

Abs F.

Yelp
I was not able to see the inside of this restaurant so this is purely based on takeout. I got the yellow curry and chicken pad thai. I was quite unimpressed. This might have been the most bland Thai food I've ever had. It lacked in flavor and color. For such positive reviews I was genuinely surprised to not enjoy my room to such an extent. We tossed the curry, not saving any left overs as people who refuse to waste food. It was similar quality to a tv dinner at least in flavor. It was a quick interaction with the Togo specialist and she was nice.

ShahTe G.

Yelp
To my surprise... live music. I loved it. The food is also very good. I had pineapple fried rice and salad rolls. Delicious.

Brue C.

Yelp
The water was one of the best I have ever had. It was fresh, crisp, and so cold. The glacier-fresh water might have drawn us in at first, but the food and company kept us like no other and the server made us laugh the entire time. Highly recommend and hope everyone will stop by to enjoy this experience like we did! :) Pad Se-you later!!

Yelp
Yummy Thai food! Welcoming staff. Quick service. Food was good. Enjoyed soon chicken phad Thai, fresh rolls with some Thai iced tea. Over great experience!

Yelp
9 years since our last meal here ... and it's STILL a 5* from me. This time, my husband and I had 3 meals here in the span of a week. Twice I had the Red Curry (veggies being my add-in of choice, which adds Carrots, Broccoli, and Cabbage to the usual ingredients). They allowed substituting Jasmine rice with Brown rice for $1 more, so I happily did that. Spice level choices were 0-5; I chose 5, and it was about right (a bit weak for my heat tolerance, but enough to enjoy). It has a decent amount of veggies, but too much curry for me to eat all of it. I enjoyed it both times. My husband had a Rainbow Wok Fry with veggies for one meal. He enjoyed the taste; he thought it was a garlic-based sauce. He chose a spice level of 4, which gave some heat without making him feel like his mouth was on fire by the time he finished. Portion size was very good for the price. Another time he had the Garlic Prawns & Peanut Sauce, which came with eight! prawns (quite generous these days) and steamed veggies (most noticeably broccoli, but also mushrooms, onions, cilantro, and at least one other). The garlic sauce itself was delicious, but the side of peanut sauce was really great. Not sickly sweet like at many Thai restaurants, it added another dimension to the flavor profile of the dish. Very enjoyable (yeah, I did eat some of it, so what?). We also each had a Papaya salad once. Admittedly we don't order this very often in Thai restaurants, but all the other times we've had it, the papaya and other ingredients were on a bed of lettuce. Not here. The lettuce comes separately, so it doesn't get soggy, and can even be used to make a few wraps if you feel like it. The fish sauce / lime dressing was delicious. Another winner in my book. The Fresh Summer Rolls with tofu tasted fresh described, and were very well wrapped. They came with the same delicious peanut sauce as described above. Service ranged from fast when very crowded, to ridiculously fast when nearly empty; once, our meals were delivered to our table in less than 5 minutes of us ordering. All servers were very pleasant, but one in particular stood out. Five days after our first meal here, when we came for our second meal, he remembered me, and that I prefer hot water instead of ice water. He brought it without me saying a word! That's a crazy good memory, and fantastic service. Considering service, pricing, and food, it remains a solid 5* for me.

Randy F.

Yelp
The food is excellent the price is great the service is excellent I can't think of anything bad about the place.

Yelp
The food at Khun Thai has fueled a lot of late nights working. Their take out is amazing. I also eat in the restaurant every few visits and the atmosphere is very kind and friendly. The chicken yellow curry is my favorite, along with the crispy basil chicken. I would also recommend the chicken satay and shrimp summer rolls as appetizers (or a meal!). I will also say this- they spell my name right every time when I get take out (I definitely go there too often) and some of my coworkers can't even spell my name right so I'm impressed.

Gina J.

Yelp
I've had pretty good luck in past experiences, but tonight's food wasn't good. I always have Salmon pumpkin Curry, which if it isn't too hot, is very good served with a couple pieces of fried salmon separately, so not to drown the fish in liquid. Tonight, after the 20 mile round trip to the establishment for take-out, I didn't find the Salmon. So back to town, another 20 mile trip, to ask them for a piece of salmon. Instead of just making this right and giving me a piece of salmon, they took offence and insisted on looking through the liquid where they claimed a piece of fish was. Now I don't want to eat anything that anyone has put their fingers in and one bite of wet fish does not make it the dish! I won't be returning. And Kuhn Thai needs to work on their people skills and their food consistency!

Yelp
As a local I have been coming here for eight years .i have spent a lot of money with them. I will not be helping this local restaurant again. The spring rolls were practically empty just a tiny bit I've overcooked cabbage. Next up pad Thai with shrimp. A clump of stuck together noodles over cooked shrimp . No flavour.i also had the tom yum soup no fresh herbs anywhere overcooked old chicken . So disappointed with this place. .

K A.

Yelp
First off, so kind staff! (We were traveling with two dogs, and the staff helped us refill our water and offered to carry things to the car. )Secondly, really, really giant portions. We genuinely could have shared one dish... but it was too yummy and we finished both our orders! Third, accurate (if safe) spice ratings. (My friend can't handle spicy Thai, and I love it. We got a three and he was fine!) finally, everything was delicious. So much so that the impressively fresh seafood was not the star of the show, as much as the delicious broth and spices. We are stuffed and so grateful!

Skyla B.

Yelp
Always amazing food! Eat there whenever I'm feeling like Thai food! Good quality... a little pricey but what isn't these days!

Mikes Classic R.

Yelp
Excellent food efficient staff thanks again the service was quick they got my food to my table fast and piping hot

Yelp
What a disappointment! I have come here every month forever...however this time my soup was not cooked as usual --no depth of flavor & my beef dish was flavorful but tough...very tough!

Yelp
We enjoyed our experience at Khun Thai. We tried the yellow chicken curry, the sizzling seafood platter, and the pad thai. The server was kind and friendly. We enjoyed the fish tank. There are two dining rooms, one is more casual and the other is more rustic and warm. Both are clean and pleasant. We enjoyed our meal and had so much food we took two boxes to go. We will be back to enjoy again when we visit Brookings.

Yelp
Requested a 7:30pm pick up on the phone. It was not ready at 7:30. They asked for "5" mins. It was more like 15. Basically, the preparation did not start till I was there. They had no trust that the order will be picked up. Trust issues. The food came in a bag. I assumed a plastic fork and napkins were in there. I returned to the hotel and when I did not find them I called and they said I should have asked for them especially. Really? A pick up without the basics. They assumed I should eat the Pad se with my hands? The guy on the phone asked me to come again and pick up the plastic fork. And then he hung up when I suggested he have it dropped off at my hotel. The people here are rude, untrusting and will try and fool customers to the extent they can. I do not write negative reviews usually, but it's been a long, long drive and I don't want to be made a fool off to end the day. Food: Not authentic Thai.

Yelp
It was my first visit to Khun Thai. I am not a fan of spicy food. I've never tried Thai food before. Therefore, I would not have gone if my friend hadn't insisted on going there as she knew a fellow who was playing music that night. My first impression when walking in the front door was how astoundingly clean and neat everything was! I've never walked into a restaurant and instantly noticed the cleanliness of the place. We continued to the cocktail lounge area and again I was delighted with the surroundings. When the waitress took our order, she explained that we could advise the level of "spiciness" that we wanted or without any hot spice at all. We both passed on the "heat". I ordered the coconut butterfly shrimp. My friend chose the curry chicken. With my first bite of the shrimp, I declared to my friend that it was the best coconut shrimp I had ever tasted, done to perfection to retain the taste without compromising on the tenderness. My friend offered me a test of the curry chicken which was in a creamy yellow soup type of base. I accepted her offer with hesitation, and was once again delighted with a wonderful flavor that I knew I might order for myself at some future visit. The service was excellent. I highly recommend Kuhn Thai. You will not be disappointed!!

Alexandra B.

Yelp
Service: Always so so kind and welcoming! Food: So delicious, however, the spice levels could be a little more spicy!
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
My son and I stopped here on our way to the Redwoods. We had Crispy Rolls. They were good and hot. I liked the glasses. Like mason jars with handles. The service was very fast. The food was good and plentiful. I asked for medium spicy and it's not spicy. So, I'd say hot if you want spicy. The prices seemed average . The bathrooms need some cleaning and repair. But that's small. The curry was very good.

Yelp
I'm a local in Brookings and I eat out on a regular basis as I have a very busy lifestyle and I feel as though I am a food connoisseur. I have a pretty high food standard and Khun Thai generally exceeds those standards and I almost never walk away unhappy they are one of the best restaurants in town, the only time when I am unhappy is when it comes to ToGo orders, which unfortunately is fairly often for me. I'm not sure why it has to be that the portions are so much smaller with to go food I'm not paying any less money and I usually pay extra for extra veggies and yet the plastic container that it comes in isn't even full. I know that the portions are larger because I do eat in the restaurant often and so I'm not understanding why this occurs. I'm wondering if anyone else experiences this and if there's something Khun Thai would like to do to fix this as I'm a regular customer and deserve just as much importance as any other customer who comes in. It seems to be typically with the stir fry orders such as holy basil. Thank you guys for being a great restaurant.

Yelp
Delicious Thai food - don't even need to discount for the location (small town vs big city). We got take out here and ate it at Harris Beach state park. Got one red curry, one pad see ew, and one spring roll. Each was excellent. Curry was the winner given the rich broth and excellent flavor without being too heavy. Food was prepared quickly and on time for pickup. Appreciate you taking care of us Khun Thai! Can't comment on the ambiance but the restaurant was packed when we walked in to pick up. Must be pretty good!

Rachel A.

Yelp
This is easily some of the best food in Brookings, Oregon. The Thai dishes are done just right--fresh, vibrant, and full of flavor. The service is quiet but wonderfully efficient, and the atmosphere is calm and inviting. It's one of Brookings' finest spots, and we're so thankful for it.

Eric L.

Yelp
Ordered dinner to go. Pad Thai for my wife, Thai Fried Rice for me and we shared some Chicken Satay. The food was amazing and the prompt service when I arrived was top notch. I highly recommend Kuhn Thai if you like Thai food. Be careful with the spice unless you like spicy food. You can pick your level of spice from 1-5. 5 being the most spicy. I tried 3 once and it tasted amazing. It was a lot of spice for me though. Great place to get some awesome food with great service.
google avatar

Mae S.

Yelp
We ordered a few different dishes to share and wow they did not disappoint! Everything was freshly prepared, appealing to the eye, with flavors that were out of this world! The service was great, very helpful and funny! We will be returning often!!! Beautiful, clean and welcoming!

Alice M.

Yelp
Service was not great! Food wasn't good. Found a fish scale on my cucumber salad. Every dishes have a fish taste. The smell of fish is all over our food. So fishy that appetite disappeared. You can never go wrong with Thai food yet this location everything just wrong. No sticky rice. Asked for spicy racks --never provided. Run out of water, never checked to see if we need refill. I would understand if they are busy. It was us in the restaurant (party of 4) .....HORRIBLE PLACE! Sad. Came here due to the amazing review. I don't understand. It's complete opposite

Yelp
Oh my stars - I haven't had Thai this good in years. Our family, whom we were visiting, raves about Khun Thai, so we clearly had to confirm their exultation. I was truly blown away by the quality and flavors this lovely restaurant achieves in their cuisine. We ordered the appetizer sampler (summer rolls, crispy rolls, fried tofu, vegetable tempura, with LOADS of peanut sauce) and it was pretty amazing, especially the summer rolls, tempura, and peanut sauce, which I will dream about nightly henceforth. I ordered Thai Pumpkin curry with tofu, and could not stop eating it. Everything about this dish is spot on - flavor, texture, blending, cooking technique - 100% perfection. My brown rice was beautifully cooked, with just the right amount of chew. I don't say this often, but this is truly some of the best Thai I've had the pleasure to enjoy, and my only regret is that I'll have to travel across the country to experience it again.
google avatar

DeAnne V.

Yelp
Kuhn Thai is one of my favorite restaurants in town and hands down the best Asian cuisine from Crescent City to Port Orford. Whether you eat take-out or dine in, you will experience the same good food and pleasant waitstaff. Some of my family's favorites are the pad Thai, the beef salad, coconut soup, dumplings, curry chicken, and the pho. See attached pictures.
google avatar

Angel L.

Yelp
I was recommended this restaurant by a hotel staff, i absolutely highly recommend. I've been to a couple restaurants in the small town, this is the best yet food and service wise.

Nanette C.

Yelp
Great food!! Can't recommend this restaurant enough. If you are in Brookings and love Thai food, this is the place to go!
google avatar

Emma E.

Yelp
Meh. We've gotten takeout from here twice, and I've been disappointed twice. The first time, I ordered the green curry and requested that it be a 5/5 (or very spicy). The dish I received was so mild I wondered if they'd put any spices in it at all. Today, I ordered a red curry with tofu and again requested that it be as spicy as possible. I was disappointed again. The curry wasn't bad per se; it was just extremely mild and almost tasted sweet. Overall, the flavor of both curries lacked depth and complexity. Their dishes are expensive for what you're getting. I won't be back.
google avatar

Hungry G.

Yelp
Best Pad Thai....Holy moly. Yellow curry.....hurry in Curry. Tom Kai....yummo Fried veggies....just o.k. We will be back!

Patricia H.

Yelp
We absolutely love this place!! Frim the first time we went til now 7 years later the food , the service, the atmosphere has not changed! It's always delicious and fresh! We look forward to our drive from Bandon to Brookings! They know exactly what we like as our appetizers to our beverages.. Syrus even know our vehicle and greets us.. very friendly people! They never disappoint!

Yelp
I got the Yakisoba noodles, they were amazing, I did spicy level 2, which is medium, and I had them add tofu. The service was fast and the staff was very kind, I highly recommend.

Stephanie B.

Yelp
A fabulous restaurant with a calm and relaxing ambiance. My partner's family enjoys coming here and I can see why. The wait staff was patient and attentive, and there was a fairly short wait time between ordering and having our food brought out to the table. The live music while we ate dinner contributed to the pleasant atmosphere. Everything from the appetizers to the entrees were delicious. Great portion sizes that are full of flavor that tasted very green and fresh with a kick of spice. Spiciness can be customized at time of ordering. I ordered my food to be a "3" out of 5 in terms of spiciness and I was very satisfied with my choice. Even though we stayed to talk in the restaurant for awhile, we were never made to feel rushed. The good vibes began upon entering the building and remained throughout. I look forward to eating here again the next time I'm in Brookings.

Tenzin P.

Yelp
This place is the BOMB!!! Got the holy basil beef, level 4 spicy and it was so good! Also ordered the chicken pad Thai and I'm still dreaming about it. They have Thai chilli if you ask. Wish I lived closer to this place. I'm going to dream about this place. Was so hungry, I didn't take pics.
