Overpriced, overhyped, flavorless.
Wanted to see what the big deal was. I only heard of this place whilst browsing a blog about things to do in Kyoto. This came up, people raved, so I went.
First of all, people get reservations for this place days ahead of time, which is absolutely ridiculous because it's not special. Yes, there are about 15 seats in the entire place, but it should be walk-in only. I feel like that started this reservation bit to seem more popular, which I'm having a hard time understanding. Here's why.
The entire restaurant is tiny, with an open kitchen so you can see what's happening. Whether you sit at the bar or the table, they'll do "the show" for you. This entails the runny omelette balanced on the fried rice, cut open (to flop over the rice), and then pours demi-glacé over it. That's it.
Let me elaborate more on the palatability of this place:
1. First off, the "chef" (if you can call him that) microwaved the vegetables for the fried rice. Done, over, negative score. That is bad form. Boil some damn water and drop them in for 30 seconds, it's that easy. Did he do that, no. So already this was off to a bad start. I grinned through it and let him proceed.
2. Fried rice was THE blandest food I'd eaten in Japan. More-so than the actual white rice. No salt, no flavor. Come on, it's fried rice!
3. Demi glacé was scorched. If you know what this means you get my nails-on-a-chalkboard feeling. For those who don't, it's like burning milk or rice. It ruins the entire batch, no matter how much you spoon off.
The one thing that he got right was the omelette. Undercooked to serve its flamboyant purpose, but done well nonetheless.
For those of you wanting to try omurice just for the YouTube sensation, you deserve to be ripped off. For those who just want to try this fusion dish, there's a perfectly good and cheap one a few blocks from this place. Just search google for "omurice" and it'll come up.
