Why Kigali, Rwanda, Should Be More Than a Layover Before Your Gorilla Safari

"No visit to Kigali (or Rwanda in general) is complete without a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Give yourself at least an hour to wind your way through the permanent collection, which integrates photography and video with personal accounts of the genocide from survivors. An outdoor garden and burial site acts as the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the devastating event that saw more than 800,000 Rwandans killed."

Historical place; also quite humbling. Pictures are not allowed inside the memorial out of respect. No charge to access the location. Voluntary contributions can be made. The 'auditory guides' can be rented for a fee, if one requires an auditory guided tour.

It is a testament of how fanatics can lead to unimaginable trauma for millions of people who were killed. What is shocking is the fact that it could have been easily prevented, but UN and France, the earlier colonial rulers supported genocide. Worth visiting to understand how human beings can be so cruel to others.

Very moving and informative museum. Self guided and paced so you can take as much time as you need. The room with the pictures of the victims was heartbreaking.

Amazing description of the years and involvement of other countries leading up to the 1994 tragedy. Be warned - very graphic pictures and descriptions of this historical event. I learned a lot about the events of the Rwanda genocide, but I felt that information following the 1994 event was missing. The memorial describes a period of recovery and then peace. When discussing with the Kigali locals, they tell a different story in the the genocide continues to this day - looks different, but is ongoing. I can only hope and pray these stories are told to the world and that peace can truly come to all peoples of Rwanda. Note: There is a counselor available at the end of the memorial exhibit. 🙏

Get to learn about the dark times Rwanda went through, the reconciliation and peace the country is experiencing now, and where the people are headed! The museum is a living history point!

A must visit in Kigali. Small and somewhat tiring but well worth it. Most of it is pictures and writings explaining what happened during the Tutsi people of Rwanda in 1994, but you may see actual belongings of the victims of the genocide as well as pictures and stories of the martyrs. The place is very quiet and welcoming. Do not forget to see the graves and the flowers garden outside the halls of the museum. I saw a caffe there but I didn’t check what they have. Also there’s a nice place to sit outside. Many of the visitors are foreigners and the place is not that crowded. I bought a souvenir but the stuff will cost you some money. One might arrive in Boda Boda (Taxi Motorcycle) or private and public transportation, it’s well known in kigali. The green spaces make it amazing to visit during even the hot days, and the insides are air-conditioned for your convenience. Do not forget to bring your water bottle since the tour is tiresome and you’re expected to roam the area on foot, especially in hot days. The audio guide is 20 thousand Rwandan francs or 20 American dollars, and the humanity pin is 10 thousand Rwandan francs or 10 US dollars.

Very powerful: a beautiful tribute and remembrance to an ugly and dark time. A symbol of peace and reconciliation, with historical context and a vision of hope for the future

The most harrowing experience of my life. Very well done, avoiding excessive politics, facts based and aimed at preventing any similar future event globally. Cried, a lot
