Why Kigali, Rwanda, Should Be More Than a Layover Before Your Gorilla Safari

"No visit to Kigali (or Rwanda in general) is complete without a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Give yourself at least an hour to wind your way through the permanent collection, which integrates photography and video with personal accounts of the genocide from survivors. An outdoor garden and burial site acts as the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the devastating event that saw more than 800,000 Rwandans killed."

Go there's with some emotional preparation as this place will move your soul. The memorial captures the brutal memories of the past so poignantly that one can't stop the tears flowing from their eyes. Every section of the memorial is such a haunting reminder to the history of this beautiful country. I would love to go there again sometime soon.

The Kigali genocide memorial offers chilling details of the event of 1994. You get firsthand information and it's a good avenue to learn and remember what really happened. But it doesn't stop there, it shows how much progress Rwanda had made in just three decades after that event.

Very well done memorial to honor the victims of the Rwanda Genocide. Be prepared to be overwhelmed with the sadness of what happened. It's impossible to understand how people could turn against each other in this way.

Historical place; also quite humbling. Pictures are not allowed inside the memorial out of respect. No charge to access the location. Voluntary contributions can be made. The 'auditory guides' can be rented for a fee, if one requires an auditory guided tour.

Very moving & emotion visit...The images & videos inside are very powerful...sometimes extremely difficult to look at ( out of respect filming & photos are not permitted inside the building's main museum) The site is also a final resting place in them for many Rwandan remains for the 1994 Genocide

It is a testament of how fanatics can lead to unimaginable trauma for millions of people who were killed. What is shocking is the fact that it could have been easily prevented, but UN and France, the earlier colonial rulers supported genocide. Worth visiting to understand how human beings can be so cruel to others.

For me, it was a very emotional experience to see first hand what actually happened to people during the genocide. Visitors were not allowed to take pictures inside. But all in all, it was an educative visit.

Very moving and informative museum. Self guided and paced so you can take as much time as you need. The room with the pictures of the victims was heartbreaking.
