This Might Be Japan's Most Beautiful National Park — With Superb Hiking and Incredible Waterfalls

"Situated in the picturesque highlands of Utoro Onsen, Kiki Shiretoko Natural Resort sets itself apart as one of the larger properties in the area. It has ample amenities, refurbished rooms, and a buffet dinner with plenty of options, from Japanese to Western dishes, to refuel after a full day of hiking and wildlife spotting." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Don’t let the 3-star rating fool you. This is a modern establishment with good onsen facility. It is better than many 4-star international chains. There are some bad reviews regarding its food and honestly, I don’t think they were justified. We stayed here two nights and yes, some food at the buffet was repetitive but they taste good. Note these will be mostly Japanese fare with a small selection of international cuisine. We stayed in a a family room which is very comfortable by Japanese standards. The hotel is serious about conservation so don’t expect daily housekeeping but fresh towels and water are given. This is a nice stay and exceeded our expectations.

Last week my friends and I went on a short trip to Hokkaido. We stayed one night at Kiki Shiretoko Natural Resort after visiting the Oshinkoshin Falls. The hotel is large, with modern amenities and a spacious lobby. There’s a corner offering free drinks from a machine dispenser along with delicious chocolate and candies which we really enjoyed. The in-house retail shop was also convenient for guests to pick up local products. The resort is uniquely located on a hilltop, surrounded by forests, and offers scenic views of the surrounding nature and the Sea of Okhotsk. We loved our spacious room, which came with clean and modern washroom and nice toiletries and very comfortable bedding. Dinner and breakfast at the Tree Side Buffet were fantastic, with a wide variety of cuisines and unforgettable flavors that made for a truly enjoyable dining experience. Overall, the service was good, and we had a very delightful stay.

We booked the forest view twin rooms and were wowed by the suite like rooms with two queen beds and a living room with L shaped sofa and wonderful view of the ocean . These rooms were newly renovated with a modern shower toilet and many amenities like face lotions and cleansers and moisturisers for both men and women . Two bottles of mineral water were also provided. Wifi was good . |Dinner was excellent with exquisitely crafted small dishes . There were beef so tender and delicious , sushi with sweet prawns , salmon and tuna. Dessert was great too with parfait ice- cream . Alcohol was abundant as well and free. |Breakfast was Japanese style mainly though there were breads like croissants and cereals . |Onsens were great as well .

The winter Sea of Okhotsk visible from the room. The rooms are clean, and the meals feature many local ingredients. The staff provided attentive service. The hot springs and sauna were clean. This is a hotel I would like to revisit.

Such a lovely hotel and experience here! A great place to stay on your own or with kids. I came here with my 2 young kids and there was lots for them to do here. They even have a small stamp game for kids on the first floor and a large area to be together as a family and watch footage of the shiretoko area. This is a great place to stay and very worth the price!

** no tattoos allowed, bring large tattoo covers because they do not provide large ones. Be aware, be prepared. Hospitality and buffet food quality leaves more to be desired than traditional family run ryokans. Buffet food become repetitive after 1 day and difficult to justify the meal price tag, paying for the illusion of luxury. For dinner you'll be better off going to Fox & Lamb which has a killer vibe and great deal on wagyu yakiniku (great in-house tare sauce) at a fraction of the dinner price. Far walk up the hill if you're not driving which is fine, just be aware. There's a morning bus towards the airport at 9 something in the morning which is convenient. Best thing about the hotel is the Save The Bear activity.

Do not book the “sunset view “ room. This allegedly higher level room than the standard is old, shabby, and looks like it has not been updated for 30 years (esp the sad bathroom).||My daughter and niece are in the standard room, a large, spacious, modern room that is cheaper. ||I feel completely misled by the hotel website. I’m spooked by this old shabby room but they can’t move me for the 3 days I’m here because they’re fully booked.||The second star is for the lovely English speaking woman at the front desk who showed kindness and empathy and tried to move me to another room. The manager was sadly disappointing insisting that the room had “high views.” I’m like um sure but the room is just scary. ||In any event, I hate being misled. Oh well, I’m shall try to enjoy my stay but I cannot recommend this place.
