Yelp
Liked the resort, hated the room. I had a hard time with the rating on this one since there were parts of this trip I really liked and parts that I really didn't. So it got a middle of the road rating from me. Here's the scoop:
The good:
- Overall, the service was good. All of the staff members we encountered on our 4 night stay were friendly and helpful.
- The heated outdoor pool/hot tubs. These were so refreshing! You can enter the pool from inside the building and wade through a plastic curtain to get outside (no swimming under anything needed). You do have to take a few steps out of the pool to get into a hot tub, but the water is perfect and that wasn't an issue. Bring a hand towel to sit on, though, as the seats in the hot tub will snag your swimsuit.
- The valet service. Complimentary and prompt. We didn't actually see a valet until the last day, which was nice because we didn't feel the need to fish for tips each time we called the car. You simply call down and request your car and it is waiting for you out front all warm and toasty when you get there. We did one larger tip at the end and that was it.
- Ski and boot check. They don't allow that stuff in the room, so you check it right at the entrance from the slopes. No lugging.
- Breakfast. The included breakfast was a really nice buffet complete with an omelet station. We had expected some lame continental spread, but this was a full and hearty breakfast.
- The slopes. Lift lines were short and they did work hard to get a lot of terrain open. The trails were very long and there were plenty to choose from.
The bad:
- Our studio room. From the poor layout to the outdated heating system to the uncomfortable bed, this room was a complete flop for us. My boyfriend dubbed it the "midget room". It could have been really nice if only they had thought about it, but they clearly didn't. The layout was terrible for the space. We had a corner room, so 1/4 of the room had a roof line jutting into it, rendering that part of the room fairly useless. There was way too much furniture in the room, and much of it unnecessary. For example, there was a table for 6 in a room that sleeps 2, which made for a 1 foot wide aisle when the murphy bed was down. Try navigating that in the middle of the night in the dark. The bathroom was also awkward, with a door that barely cleared the toilet and bunched up the bath mat every time you opened it. The murphy bed did indeed contain a regular mattress on a platform, but it wasn't a comfortable one and every move each of us made was felt by the other. And we moved around a lot because neither of us could get/stay comfortable with the old-fashioned wall unit for HVAC. Two heat/cool and high/low buttons accompanied a warmer/colder dial. No thermostat, so we adjusted it about 100 times throughout the 4 night stay. For the prices, we were both surprised that this hadn't been updated. The shower completed the experience with water pressure that would not stay consistent, forcing you to step forward and back throughout your shower and taking forever to rinse.
- The "convenient ski-bridge access" wasn't really all that convenient. In ski boots, that's a long walk and very windy. If you are expecting ski in/ski out, this doesn't really deliver that.
- The on-site restaurant, Preston's, was overpriced and underwhelming. We ate there the first night and then not again. The food was average, but billed as fine dining and priced accordingly. I was willing to try it again on the last day for lunch (mostly since I didn't want to go outside), but found that it doesn't open until 3. That means that there is no actual lunch served on site. If you are hungry mid-day, your options are some pre-packaged deli stuff in the gift shop or leaving the building.
- The overpriced and underwhelming commentary also goes for all of the eateries at the base lodges and the gift shop food/drink selections. We spent $35 on two boring sandwiches and a bottle of water. Pack a lunch and save the money to do something fun with the savings.
- Can I get a drink? So if you purchase beer/wine at the gift shop, you are only allowed to drink it in the room. If you want to drink elsewhere on the property, you have to purchase at the bar. No problem, except the bar isn't open until 3 and the servers don't leave the bar area. Want a glass of wine in the hot tub or on the sofa near the fireplace? You have to go get it (which from the pool in winter is a long way). So forget a mid-afternoon drink outside the room because there is no place to buy it.
