These Will Be the Biggest Wellness Travel Trends of 2025

"Why go? As Hawaii moves more organically into a wellness space, with dedicated retreats such as Sensei Lanai, Kilolani at the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, opens as an impressive, and very large, new offering that combines one of Maui’s iconic retreats with possibly the most thoughtfully Hawaiian approach to wellness anywhere in the state. If you want to learn about local culture and heritage and leave feeling a million bucks, this is the spa for you. Set the scene There are certain places on earth that you simply never want to leave, regardless of what’s promised behind another door. The tropical landscaped grounds with views across the dreamy blue of the Pacific Ocean at the Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort in Maui, is one such place. But the team at the new Kilolani spa knows that. Treatment and relaxation rooms face the ocean, open air hydrobaths mean you still catch the Bird-of-Paradise-scented breeze and bananas plucked from the trees onsite are offered as pre-treatment snacks. In other words, this spa becomes an extension of, rather than escape from, the destination. Following cultural appropriateness, the retreat is divided into feminine and masculine spaces, Ku (for males) and Hine (for females) meaning each wing has dedicated amenities for different sets of guests which helps the space never feel crowded. A trained set of attendants intuitively appear at each stage of your journey to easily guide you through the spaces and help with whatever the need, should it be a robe, hydrating cup of water after the sauna or guidance on how to find the stairs to the treatment wing. What's the backstory? The $55 million spa is so drastically different in concept, scope, size and design that Kilolani is not simply a renovation on Grand Wailea’s previous spa, which felt like a nice idea should you get rained off the beach, but a new proposition entirely that would have you prioritizing a spa day as one might a hike in the Waihe’e Ridge or driving the Road to Hana. And Grand Wailea knew to match outsized ambition with outsized talent. Adam Tihany’s legendary Tihany Design firm, who know a thing or two about designing large-scale functionality you actually want to be in from their work with leading cruise lines like Seabourn, was brought in to shape the 50,000 square feet into a tranquil, fluid space that pulls influence from the surrounding islands. The visionary TLEE Spa and Wellness, known for turning hotel spas into veritable destination wellness centers in places such as The Ritz Carlton Reserve, Zadun in Mexico, and Auberge Stanley Ranch in California, crafted programming. But the retreat was careful to necessarily ensure local voices and practitioners were involved every step of the way. The resort’s supremely knowledgeable cultural director, Kalei ‘Uwēko‘olani, herself a local whose job, as she tells it, is “to make sure that Aloha lives,” was involved throughout the process, from reviewing the treatments to considering the appropriate chants that may play when guests first walk into the space. What’s the wellness concept? Kilolani is the Hawaiian word for the stargazers, those who were inspired by the heavens. It is an appropriate name, therefore, for a spa whose wellness concept centers around Hawaii’s three lunar phases. In Anahulu Ho’Onui, the first phase, there is a focus on new beginnings and self-discovery; With Anahulu Poepoe, phase two, it's about fortifying and clarifying. During Anahulu Ho Emi, the third and final phase, the focus is diminishing, surrendering and reflecting. When Hoku, or the full moon appears, there are plans to conduct spa treatments outside by moonlight. Every ten days, programming changes with the phases, which includes different treatments and essential oils designed to increase wellness results based on natural rhythms. The oils are crafted by a woman on the island named Loleilani who grows plants specific to the lunar cycles. With the effect the moon’s pull has on the ocean and the tides, water is a key component here and the hydrotherapy chambers are some of the best I’ve ever seen. Intentionally, you can see or hear water from every space in the spa; Wailea means ‘Water of Lea’ and Lea is the goddess of water in Hawaiian culture. This is not a medical spa, but rather a feel-good, smartly programmed pampering spa that feels like you are getting more than a facial or massage, but rather a considered, wellness-focused immersion in certain aspects of Hawaiian culture. Is there a nutrition concept? This is not a medical spa and therefore there is no nutrition concept, but healthful snacks like fruit grown on property and nuts are available in the changing spaces, hydrotherapy zone and the relaxation rooms. Was there a standout treatment? The menu is loaded with thoughtful treatments that range from scrubs to massages to facials. I thoroughly enjoyed the sound bath, performed by Maui Sound Healers with an assortment of instruments including a didgeridoo, gongs and crystal balls. It is held outside the spa in the resort’s onsite wooden chapel where the acoustics are fantastic. After 90 minutes you emerge feeling more than just a little stoned. Though if you book one knock out treatment i would make it the two-hour Kilolani signature massage which begins with a scrub infused with botanicals depending on the moon cycle (mine was lemongrass pegged to phase three, to help wind down) and finished with an essential-oil infused full body massage. Honorable mention would go to the superfood facial, which used local uzu, pineapples and plums to plump up and energize skin. I didn’t try it, but I imagine the extensive After Sun Treatment which promotes healing and hydration, will prove to be a hit, too. How was/were your therapist(s)? Therapists were excellent, and well-trained; when one masseuse noticed my body not responding the way she would have liked to a hot stone massage she switched it up without a hitch to deep tissue (and oh man am I glad she did). Many were therapists from the spa’s first iteration and re-trained for this new programming by local medicinal practitioners at the island’s pre-eminent Ho’Omana Spa which specialized in Native Hawaiian wellness teachings.. They are from all over the world, including France, California and Brazil. What else do they offer? The spa is meant to have something of a halo effect on the resort as a whole. More local grown foods are being used on the resort menus. Wellness bars are planned to be added to the resort’s premier Napua Towers. There is of course a terrific onsite gym which spans many levels and has everything from yoga mats to peloton bikes. Each morning, simply fantastic sunrise yoga is offered on the beach. What’s the space like? The space is textured and varied, designed like an extension of a variety of natural environments. The entrance is earthen toned and spacious, evoking meadows. As you move into the changing rooms, a mountain of sea salt stands in a blackened space designed to telegraph the moon in the night sky. Natural materials and patterns abound throughout. Though the spaces all feel different, they work together harmoniously. The hydrotherapy is partly open air, which allows the natural soundtrack of the resort’s luscious 44-acre grounds to carry through the air and drenched in natural sunlight. The upstairs waiting reception is also open walled, letting the natural elements in. The 40 treatment rooms are dimly lit (except for certain spaces that look out, rather brightly, to the Pacific Ocean though I heard that helps with facials). No matter where you are, the space is calming. Eco/sustainability efforts The spa is dedicated to spotlighting traditional Hawaiian-inspired treatments and local ingredients. Certain medicinal plants grown on the property will be incorporated into oils and treatments going forward as will some of the honey from the resort's six hives. All the plants used in each oil are grown on the property. Accessibility There are ramps to help guests into the changing rooms and hydrotherapy baths as well as elevators to take guests upstairs to the treatment rooms. Anything else to mention? As Oweko’olani mentioned to me, “I will not let something happen that is not aligned to our culture.” Kilolani Spa is a very well done wellness destination that clearly cares about making sure Hawaii is respected while ensuring the modern traveler gets the best possible care. If my review has not made it clear enough, definitely show up for your treatment at least one hour early to use the hydro therapy which has saunas, hot pools, cold plunges, hammams and more. Final word The Kilolani Spa is a respectful representation of Hawaiian wellness that will knock the socks off of even the most well-versed spa guests. It is a fresh reason to return to Maui’s iconic Grand Wailea - or even to check it out for the first time."

"This $55 million spa is so different from its predecessor that it’s not even fair to call it a renovation. The Grand Wailea’s previous spa felt like a back-up plan for rainy days, but this new iteration, now the largest in the state, feels like a destination unto itself. Treatment rooms face the ocean, open air hydro baths let you capture the scent of flowers on the breeze, and bananas plucked from the on-site trees are offered as relaxation room snacks. No detail here is overlooked—down to treatments’ use of essential oils crafted by a woman on the island named Loleilani who grows botanicals according to the lunar cycles."

This was such as beautiful spa experience. I love that we not only received massages but had a spa experience. We had a couple massage and the massage itself was relaxing and the oil they used according to moon phase was a nice touch. It was nice the spa area had area both genders could share so me and my husband could soak together. The waterfall showers are beautiful touch and they have both cold and hot temperatures. The Grand Wailea has nice scenery to enjoy on the walk to the spa. Just make sure to bring bathing suit since you need one. The spa feels like an oasis in the midst of hotel and would love to come back!

My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary with a couples massage at the newly renovated Kilolani Spa. And it was a wonderful experience. Right when you walk in you can already feel the serenity of a Grand spa. The staff was great and helpful. Their concept/ Story which is about the Hawaiian Lunar calendar is great and goes along with your whole spa experience. The facilities were top notch. Especially loved the co-Ed mineral pool and steam room which no where else in island has. They offer steam, sauna and cold plunges in separate men’s and women’s area. Our couples massage went really well. Definitely a spa I could spend the entire day at.

They recently upgraded the spa and it is truly amazing. The hydrotherapy garden has multiple saunas, cold plunge options, hot tub and float pool. The lounge has the best view of the grounds and the ocean. There’s also a very relaxing meditation area. The service was top notch. A special shout out to Cecile, who took excellent care of me while I was at the spa!

The Kilolani Day Spa at the Grand Wailea, Waldorf Astoria was a great experience. We were not staying at the hotel but wanted to check it out so we booked a 2 hour spa pass. As one would expect, the staff, facilities, and experience were top notch. It was $150 per person for the pass and the valet parking fee was validated by the spa. The full-service locker room had all the towels, shower shoes, robe, hair care products, and other skin care items you could possibly need or want. There was a same gender section that had a initial cleaning shower and then the speciality spa experiences- cold shower, cold mist, hot shower, waterfall, dry sauna, steam sauna, and a hot soak. They had a recommended circuit to follow if you wanted a traditional experience. In the joint use area were the same minus the dry sauna and hot soak. Instead there was a large saltwater pool, not cold but not hot. It was quite relaxing for my wife and I to have the traditional circuit in our own areas and then come together in the multi use area. As we were in Maui celebrating a special event, the staff poured us a glass of excellent Champagne in the special use room. Kudos and thank you for making our visit a most enjoyable one!

Lainey was an absolute dream worker. Absolute professional and was complete perfection from start to finish. I visited back in 2019, so I can tell you without a doubt that the renovation spared no expense. It’s beautiful, functional and top notch in all areas. Definitely treat yourself with a massage and ask specifically for Lainey!

This spa offers so much to do and you’ll even lose track of time enjoying all the amenities. The entire staff was very friendly and always checked in on us to see if we needed anything. Every time the Spa Attendant Cecile saw us in the hot tub, she made sure to reset the timer on the jets so we could enjoy our time in there. I really appreciated her attention to detail, it made our experience even better. You are offered a body scrub and tour before you enjoy the facility. The spa facility offers a Steam Room, a cold plunge pool, hot tub with a waterfall, and a dry sauna. My favorite part of the women’s facility was the cold bucket shower that was next to the Steam Room. I was also able to enjoy the Infrared Light Therapy sauna as well, it is definitely worth the extra $ to upgrade your experience. There is also a Co-Ed area where both you and your partner can enjoy together a heated salt pool, and the Hammam together. Definitely the best spa experience!!!

Google
Kilolani Spa is hands down one of my favorites! From the exceptional service to the incredible amenities and hydrotherapy gardens, everything was top-notch. I had an amazing massage that truly exceeded my expectations. My therapist took the time to listen to my needs and pinpoint any areas of tension, making sure the session was tailored just for me. I left feeling completely relaxed and renewed! Make sure you ask for Robin when booking a massage...he is the best therapist!

Google
An exquisite location with the best service. We were staying at another property but decided to venture over to the Kilolani, and it was so worth it. Eva and Kele were amazing massage therapists, even giving us recommendations for wellness back at home. We felt relaxed and at peace during the massage. Would recommend for sure - worth every penny!

Yelp
Review for Grand Wailea Spa My husband gifted my parents and me a wonderful 60-minute Lomi hot stone massage for my mum's birthday, and it was absolutely heavenly. All four of us spent an afternoon being pampered, and the experience was nothing short of incredible. The amenities were outstanding--from the luxurious scrub, sauna, and steam rooms to the beautiful joint areas featuring a salt pool, sauna, and steam rooms. The showers were amazing, stocked with high-quality products, and the post-treatment areas had Dyson hair dryers and premium hair care products. I only wish I had known how exceptional the amenities were beforehand--I would have brought everything to get fully ready in the spa! The only downside was that the cold plunge tub on the women's side was down when we visited in late February 2025, but that was a small hiccup in an otherwise perfect experience. Will 100% be back! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a luxurious and rejuvenating spa day.

Yelp
Going for a spa in Hawaii is not a budget experience. It becomes even less so when the spa is at the Waldorf Astoria. Thus, the pricing here is proportionally insane, landing at nearly $700 for a 50 min massage for two. This is more expensive than exquisite properties like Ritz Maldives, Montage Big Sky and likely everywhere else one can imagine. Some might say it's nuts, others from expensive West Coast cities might consider it to be more or less acceptable. The spa here is substantial amenity and size wise. There is a lot to do, from a great co-ed area with a small pool to saunas and steam rooms. The odd thing about the coed pool here is that there is nowhere to lounge by it. It's surrounded by beautiful, but impractical benches and while swimming in it is pleasant surrounded by live orchids, it's missing the vibe of many top tier spas around the world. The staff working here are extremely attentive, kind and professional. It's what one would expect from a spa at a five star hotel. Yet, some weird elements here also. For example, had a pre-arranged "champagne" toast (as stated by front desk), which turned out to be a cheap Prosecco and instead of being served during the experience, they forgot about it and it ended up being served in the lobby on the way out. It was sort of an odd place to enjoy a wine toast by the reception desk, with no snacks or anything else. Speaking of snacks and beverages, the Kilolani Spa falls short here as well. There is very minimal everything: minimal snacks and fruit, no proper tea selection and just a very limited set of drinkable and edible things to enjoy. The massages were absolutely excellent and while I can't say "worth every penny", it is Maui. One can find similar or better spa experiences for a third of the price in many other countries and islands, but it would not be fair to compare to that. So, would I recommend it? If one has the money to splurge and needs a massage specifically during the trip to Hawaii, then indeed this is an extensive and beautiful spa. Otherwise, book a flight to Mexico, Caribbean or Asia, visit a five star hotel and get three massages for the price of one.

Yelp
My Masseuse Kaori was good 20% automatic gratuity added without advance notice Spa amenities are good, you can use the pool & hammam

Yelp
Spectacular! One of the best spa experiences I've enjoyed! The staff here is 5 star/diamond all the way. They are genuine and so helpful yet unobtrusive. They are there when you want them and not when you don't. It's like they have a sixth sense about what their guests want/need. I'd go back to this spa if I had the opportunity. (It is pretty pricey tho.) For my 1 hour Lomilomi massage (plus an add-on foot treatment) plus tip... $334. This did include an hour in the Hydrotherapy Garden. The HG is a unique experience that I had not done anywhere else. There's a whole "process" to the HG experience. It was unique, invigorating, heart pumping (that cold bucket... wow!) and yet soothing too. The massage I received was beautiful and made me feel like jello which was good because my neck and feet were aching from all the running around and traveling I had been doing. So, this hit the spot. I spoke with another guest who happened to be an aesthetician (on vacation from Arizona), who said this was the best spa experience she had ever enjoyed too. So, it's nice to know that my experience is not just my opinion. She thought so too and she's in the industry, so I feel like her opinion means more than mine. :)

Yelp
Great experience Came out speechless Hydrotherapy was good VIP service I felt- Aida and the whole team

Yelp
We booked a spa day at Kilolani on the second full day we got to the Island. When you book a treatment, you automatically get use of the Hydrotherapy Gardens (so arrive an hour before your treatment!) I booked us an extra hour after our treatment so we really had a spa day. When you arrive, the first thing you do is set your intention. Then you get a tour of the facilities - it is quick - but once you start to enjoy it is relaxing. There is a shower, where you can go from hot, warm, and cold. There is a cold water plunge. As well as a sauna. The salt water floating is the best. But my favorite was the hammam. I spent so much time in there! For our treatments, we had the hot stones massage. It was so relaxing. The only thing I did not like was the upsell, I get it - it is their jobs to do that, but I just wanted to get started with our massages. We will definitely visit this spa again when we visit the island!

Gina G.

Yelp
Most beautiful spa I've ever been to and I've been to quite a few. From the check in process to the intention setting ritual, and every single space that made me physically gasp. This was such a great choice for a spa day in Maui!

Tiera C.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing experience. We had such a fabulous time spending the day at the spa, sauna hot tubs, and laying in the sun! Beautiful experience

Maui G.

Yelp
Such a much needed relaxing time. We did the Hydrotherapy Gardens and they were such a blessing. As we did the tour I wasn't really intrigued by them, but the second I got my foot in the salt water pool I was hooked. That pool was by far my fav. It was so relaxing to just sit in it and think about life..meditate! They surprisingly had an ice bath that I tried and really wasn't my thing, but my friend loved it. My 2nd fave was the dry steam room with eucalyptus scented steam. Hope I lost a pound or two too Not only did I enjoy the experience, but the service was top notch too. The ladies were so polite and informative. It was also a pleasure that I think the manager came around to check up on us. Such a time that we will definitely be back for!!

Brett M.

Yelp
This place is incredible. The vibe is really relaxed with an all outdoor feel. Everything is pretty spread out so you never feel crowded, they even have a spot to drop cold water on yourself. Highly recommended! Definitely a big fan of the scented steam room on the guys side, but the mixed steam room is Can't leave out the service. They were extremely welcoming and will get you anything you need. I'll be back!

Cassandra P.

Yelp
Amazing experience at Kilolani! I went with my husband during our first trip to Maui in September 2024. The spa is absolutely gorgeous and everything is pristine, including the women's area which has bathrooms, lockers, a vanity area, and showers. The amenities are incredible-arrive early for the hydrotherapy, which includes an indoor salt water pool, a spa, steam room, and sauna. And most importantly the massage- we had a couples massage with Lily and Christian and they were beyond excellent. They tailored our massage to us and it was clear they were very skilled- I felt amazing afterwards. Plus, they were warm and super friendly. Everything about this place is designed to be peaceful and serene- I would absolutely go back. But maybe I'll book 90 mins next time with Lily! Lol Thanks Kilolani Spa!

Maria E.

Yelp
The most expensive spa I've ever been to. Couples massage for $750 plus the automatically add a 20% tip no matter what. The pools were fine but the old spa was better. AND if you want to use the sauna for couples, it cost $98 to turn it on for 45 minutes! Sheesh! The massage was fantastic but the treatment rooms were ugly and the music was terrible.

Juli T.

Yelp
Celebrated my birthday here at this beautiful spa! It was so relaxing and very clean. Staff was very friendly and attentive from start to finish. We loved our day spent here and hope to return soon!

Chris G.

Yelp
Was shown the men's locker room for a day spa experience. No instructions given on the tour and the attendant just abandoned me to sit out front. Design me at least twice but saying nothing. After 30 min I just collected my belongings and left. 6 or seven employees out front any no one thought to make sure a guy standing with a towel in his hand needed any guidance or help. As someone who's in the customer service business this is the worst high end service experience I've even had. Pay attention to customers.

Nicole B.

Yelp
I can't say enough about my experience at this spa. Everything from the staff being incredible to the details of how everything is set up, just beautiful! They have a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, pool, and basically everything you'd want for your perfect day at the spa. They also have the option of a coed section to enjoy the pool and even a steam room with the best scent ever!! We love the Kilolani spa and can't wait to come back to visit. If you're on Maui, do yourself a favor and go to this spa. You won't regret it!

Milly C.

Yelp
My husband and I got a deep tissue couples massage for our wedding anniversary and it was honestly the best massage we've ever gotten. We've gotten plenty of massages all over the world and this is hands down the best. Corrie released all the tension I had on my back. aLily got my husbands shoulders to finally relax. I cannot rave about them enough.if you want to relax and detach from life this is it !

Yelp
The good: * The therapist gave me the best therapeutic massage I've ever had and I get massages often. He was very responsive to my request and checked in frequently to ensure that I was satisfied with the pressure and style of the message. * The facial was also tailored to my skin needs and the aesthetician also incorporated ASMR as part of the treatment. The bad: * They've recently done a remodel of the spa and if I have to be honest the old spa was much better. * Most of the facilities are co-ed, and if you are apprehensive about your body, the last thing you want, is to be in a swim suit next to a bunch of strangers of the opposite gender. * The footprint is too small for the amount of things they tried to do with the renovation. It's sensory overload and some of the features are ad-ons and not complimentary with your spa experience. * The check-in process is way too long. They allow you to arrive 1hr before your service, but the check-in process was 15 minutes, the tour of the spa facilities was another 7-10 min. So by the time you actually get changed you've got 20 min before your service begins. I felt rushed. * once you have your facial the last thing you want to do is go to the showers and pools and wash all the expensive products off. * They make you complete a check-in process on an iPad which ultimately is just a gimmick to get you to buy their products. I used to come to Maui just for the Wailea spa. This visit will be my last time. Not impressed with reno.

Rich W.

Yelp
Thank you for a wonderful experience! Friendly and informative staff. The remodel provides a relaxing and recharging atmosphere. I enjoyed the array of spa amenities and co-ed space. Check out Botero lobby lounge after. The Garden roll is unique and refreshing. A great way to complete a day of self care.
