Slow fashion picks up speed in Hanoi - SilverKris

"Founded by a Hanoi-based designer who studied and worked in Europe, this slow-fashion label pairs contemporary tailoring with age-old Vietnamese textile techniques. The brand works directly with ethnic artisans to produce handwoven, indigo-dyed and batik fabrics using traditional ingredients such as indigo, bark and tea; some pieces require repeated dye dips over weeks to achieve their deep hues. Collections are released just once a year and take about six months from planting and weaving through design and promotion, resulting in roughly 1,000 handcrafted, often reversible garments annually. The aesthetic favors neutral, easy-to-pair tones and comfortable yet statement silhouettes, and the label emphasizes cultural identity, traceability and preserving traditional skills rather than rapid scaling." - Isabelle Sudron

5 local Hanoi brands to discover on your next trip - SilverKris

"A pioneer in Hanoi’s slow-fashion scene since 2012, the label is overseen by its founder at every production stage—from sourcing natural materials to the calm, lakeside shop presentation. The pieces are ethically produced by local artisans, built to last as a deliberate alternative to throwaway fashion, and lean toward smart-casual silhouettes in deep blues, earthy reds and natural yellows." - Joshua Zukas

Fabulous sustainable fashion. Unfortunately most of their larger sizes were not available but they can custom make pieces if you have some time.

Locally sourced materials with great design. Thao(owner) studied and taught at London fashion school before starting this brand. Pricy end but totally worth it since you can’t find this mix of quality and design elsewhere in Vietnam. I bought a linen indigo blaze from them! Totally worth it

Ever since I got conscious about my consumption and production most especially on fashion, I see to it that I get to visit and support sustainable social enterprises. One of which is Kilomet 109 found in Hanoi. I searched for sustainable shops in Hanoi and Kilomet 109 was suggested by Google. I am so happy that we get to visit. I gained more knowledge and better perspective yet again on shifting how to create, make and use fashion mindfully. HUGE bonus that this brand also taps cultural aspect. The shop itself is well thought of, aesthetically pleasing and informative. Haven’t met Thao, the designer, but glad that her husband was welcoming enough to introduce us to this brand and walk us around — showing us the designs, the materials on display that were used to create the pieces, talking us through the process on how each piece is curated by hand. I walk out of the shop filled with and of course a happy purchase knowing that I get to support something that is aligned to what I believe in and the minds and hands behind it. The top that I bought is now one of my favorites!!

Great cloves - and fantastic creative projects. A pionner of sudtainable fashion in Vietnam, but they take it deeper than most projects in this field. Working with a number of local community in Vietnam, they design the whole process 'from seeds to cloves.' Variety of traditional manual techniques are used to create these items.
