How to Ski the Powder Highway in Canada

"If you like big mountains and car-free vacations, look no further. Kimberley is surrounded by jagged peaks, and the car-free downtown area feels like a snow globe — with a quaint look and quiet atmosphere. The ski area is known for its light powder and plenty of sun. It also has lots of ski-in, ski-out lodging, which makes it an excellent choice for families. Kimberley Alpine Resort is 90 minutes west of Fernie by car. How to Ride: Epic Pass holders can ski up to seven days at Kimberley Alpine Resort. Single-day lift tickets start at 105.40 CAD (around $75)." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. Took my kids skiing for the first time today. They all had an excellent time and so did I. My only “complaint” is that I was not able to buy a beer for the staff who gave my youngest a ride down the mountain when she was ready to be done. Big THANK YOU. Looking forward to coming back in the future.

Google
Not the most famous or the best powder but we always had fun in Kimberly. Great family resort to spend time with your loved ones during the snow season.

Great hill. Something for everyone. Very friendly staff and lots of places to stay right on the hill. A bit pricey, but they all are. We will be back!

We had a wonderful family holiday in Kimberley. We were there for awhile (as it’s one of the more affordable ski spots in North America) so we rented skis boots and poles for the whole family through the WINGS leasing programme. You get the gear for the whole season. The staff at the Kimberley rental shop were fantastic - very knowledgeable and helped us out when we needed smaller boots or poles etc. The community-feel that everyone talks about at Kimberley is very real. We joined the NYE party in the square, had incredible instructors through the ski school, enjoyed an ice hockey match, caught the free shuttle to town for great dinners and craft beers, and generally felt like we got to see a slice of Canadian mountain life alongside many days exploring the mountain. The mountain was great for our beginner to intermediate skiing family. Some nice and easy greens and blues, ZERO queues and not too many people on the slopes. We got so much skiing in that we were enjoying some of the easier or groomed black runs by the end. An extra shout out to Daniel (rental shop), Freya and Noah (ski school) and all the Kimberley RCR crew for making it such a memorable week.

Just returned to Kimberly after a ski trip in Fernie and the difference between the two locations is great. OK on the third day in Fernie we had a dump of snow and it was good powder, and amazing. Hard to beat. Nevertheless, Fernie was much better prepared on the runs. And the variety of lower runs in Blue and Green allows for a fun day. While Kimberly has the long North Star quad chair lift, and the blues and a few greens are long and converge on the bridge to the start of the lift. So a real bottleneck. And after the bridge to run down to the lift is not green.. Once up the North Star you can move over to the backside, but they are not always well groomed runs. In fact I was on Vimy Ridge and the run surveyor was having a real argument on the phone with the director about opening runs. It would also be nice if somebody took a brush cutter to the pines growing on the runs. The RCR staff at the locations seem to come from different planets, the Fernie staff are great friendly and helpful. And the ski patrol is on the ball. You can't say that of Kimberly at all. Except being for the cafe staff they are friendly..

Google
Kimberly resort is a great family ski destination . Staff on the hill and in the facilities were helpful and friendly . The overall ski experience was great with a variety of runs for all types of skiers. I wound recommend the hill as a great destination resort for all my friends in the east .

I took a 2 hour lesson about a month ago with Maja. She was seriously amazing! I was a complete beginner when I arrived - I didn't even know how to take the skis apart from one another and put them on my feet. By the end of the lesson I was fairly comfortable in skiing down the mountain, in a pizza of course, but skiing nonetheless. I am so pumped that I finally know how to ski, and I appreciate Maja so much for her amazing tips and patience with me. I learned a lot from her and she was so fun! This hill was a great place to learn to ski. Really enjoyed it. Can't wait to come back!

Google
Great ski hill for beginner to intermediate skiers. If you’re looking for something a bit more interesting try going to the far north side and jumping in beyond the patrol lines. We found some fun fresh snow in there !

Yelp
Just to start off I am a intermediate level snowboarder but I also ski and a moderate to high level. Overall the hill was nice but I think there are things that won't make me want to come back here anytime soon. First is I don't love that the majority of the blue and green runs are off a single chair, granted I understand that they are limited with what they have but I find for the beginner level people it is difficult to really move off the main quad chair which does move fast but is a bit of a wait. As well due to the main run being the nicest and easiest there are many many kids on it which does make the run more difficult as you try to avoid them and since you have to pass over the road it funnels people quite a lot. Second is I found the black runs were not only packed with moguls which is fine but they were very icy, and there was a lack of powder. The blacks also feel a bit unkept as they didn't seem very well groomed and not much snow to cushion. I do have to say I only went here for one day of skiing and hit about 10 different runs in the day. I did enjoy the ski out and the lines were not super long which made the day much more enjoyable!

Yelp
Would have been a 5-star and I know it was for the BF. My only holdout is that I am a beginning skier and this mountain is best suited for advanced skiers. It has very few greens and even those are blue-like in their steepness. That said, the mountain is beautiful! So natural and majestic - almost humbling to look at. The ski instruction and all the staff we met - in ticket office, rental shop, retail shop, restaurants were super warm and friendly and just seem so happy to be working here. I took 3 amazing half day lessons and went down the mountain - white knuckling sure, but eager for another ski trip sometime soon. We stayed at Northstar, which is amazing ski-in, ski-out. Sooooo convenient to jump out of bed, into your skis, and down the slope you go!

Yelp
Here's where to go if you are more concerned about hitting the slopes than anything else. An excellent authentic ski resort that is perfect for families, Kimberley Alpine Resort offers everything you are looking for in a ski getaway. Ski In/Ski Out accommodations, more skiing and less waiting with fewer crowds and wide-open, groomed runs. You feel like its it's your mountain! Kimberley is located in the heart of the East Kootenays, in Southeast British Columbia. Its a 3.5 hour drive from Spokane, WA. and a 20 minute drive from Cranbrook, BC. Kimberley's downtown German-themed Platzl shopping and restaurants are close by. However, we stocked up and hung out in our townhouse which had a cozy fireplace and a hot tub on the deck overlooking a run. There is a Marriott Hotel in the village with a nice little bar which provided the perfect ending to a great day on the slopes.

Yelp
Resorts of the canadian rockies or RCR as they are often known operate Kimberley, as well as some other canadian ski resorts. RCR offers poor customer service and completely ripped me off. I purchased a ISKI discount pass directly from their HQ in Calgary, was required to activate the card online but when I did so, their website would not let me. I emailed them asking for help only to have a person named Erin reply four days later and conveniently the day following the season closure of the resort telling me the card is now expired and non refundable. Such poor service is inexcusable fraud since I am out $45 and received nothing in return. Deal with them and their resorts (Kimberley, Fernie, Nakiska or Kicking horse) at your own peril knowing that if you have a problem, their customer service will give you the run around and rip you off. As for me, B.C. is spoiled for choice as far as other ski resorts go. As well, Whitefish Mountain Resort, MT is not that far from Kimberley and offers significantly better service, skiing and value all round. The limited selection (qty2) of bars & restaurants, food quality and value on the hill is quite poor. Unfortunately, except for touristy bavarian food, the selection in town is worse.

Yelp
Spent a day skiing here and it is now one of my favorite resorts in BC. It is a small resort in the town of Kimberly but there is plenty to keep you occupied for a day or two. We were there on a weekday in January and it was fairly quiet so you wouldn't have to wait more than a minute to get on any of the lifts. There is plenty of options for all different levels of skiers just don't expect to get the same mountain elevation as other mountains but it is quite wide and there are a few different areas to keep your attention. When we were there the grooming was pretty good just be warned there are a few flat patches along the cat tracks that you need to skate/walk over before you can get some speed up. Overall its a nice break from overcrowded resorts and its not touristy with just a few options for dining at the base of the mountain. The reason I gave it 4 stars is we had a mix up with our RCR card that we collected at the resort and were given a kimberly card instead which gave us some dramas down the track when we tried to go to other resorts.

Yelp
A solid little mountain in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. A lot of runs to keep you occupied for a few days. There's randomly a huge chunk of the mountain that doesn't have easy access to a lift, so you have to hike far and make a plan of attack to get to one side of the mountain. A little annoying, but the snow is great.
