Kimpton Clocktower Hotel (Manchester, UK) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A stately Victorian office building dating back to 1890 is the setting for the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, a fine example of the American-born brand’s affinity for British heritage buildings. It’s an approach that strikes a balance between respectful preservation and playful irreverence — what’s meant to be preserved, like the ornate stone-clad lobby, remains as grand as ever, while the rooms and suites, necessarily updated from their tenure as offices, display a more colorful and borderline whimsical approach." - Tablet Hotels

We enjoyed a great stay here in a family room.||The hotel entrance is very impressive and reception staff friendly and attentive on arrival. We never experienced any wait for reception.||Our room was very clean and well presented. It was spacious and light. We also found our room to be quiet which was welcome.||The double bed was a little too hard for my husband and I and so our sleep was a little disturbed. If we visited again I would definitely request a mattress topper to be more comfortable. The room had 2 double beds. I felt that for the size of the room with ample space, it would certainly have benefited from at least one King size bed.||We visited the hotel bar. It's a beautiful space but the large dimensions and very high ceilings did compromise the atmosphere.||Breakfast was fantastic. Very good selection of food and very high quality. We didn't dine in the evening at the hotel, but if breakfast was any indication, I would imagine the food would be excellent

I absolutely love this hotel! It feels very luxurious and comfortable. The lobby and restaurant are full of classic charm, and every corner is picture-perfect. The in-room snacks were generous, which was such a nice touch. I really enjoyed the breakfast and the 5 p.m. Happy Hour — both were amazing. I highly recommend this hotel, and when I come back to Manchester, I will definitely stay here again!

This was, without question, the worst hotel experience of my life. The moment you leave the lobby, everything changes. The lobby itself is beautiful—clean, modern, and inviting—but as soon as you step into the hallway toward the rooms, it becomes a completely different world. The carpet is filthy, the lighting is eerie, and the entire atmosphere feels unsafe—like walking into a horror movie set. I was shown four different rooms because each one was dirty and unacceptable. The final “upgrade” I was given was to a handicap-accessible room that had a mysterious door beside the bed, which made me feel even more uneasy. The lights in the room would randomly turn on in the middle of the night, and I could hear strange noises and people talking through the walls. The rooms themselves are outdated, dull, and depressing. I genuinely felt scared during my entire stay. I even cried in the lobby during my first day in Manchester because I was so overwhelmed and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I had come from another country and couldn’t easily leave. I had also paid for two rooms—one for another guest who didn’t come—and although I didn’t expect a refund, I at least hoped for a decent upgrade. Instead, I was moved between dirty rooms for hours. This experience completely ruined what should have been an exciting trip. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone under any circumstances.

We stayed at The Clocktower for a night away from reality, and it was absolutely amazing. The hotel itself is beautiful – the rooms are stylish, comfortable, and in a fantastic location, making it the perfect city escape.||What really made our stay memorable, though, was the outstanding service we received in the dining room from Ana. From the moment we sat down, she made us feel welcome and at ease. She was friendly, attentive, and incredibly professional, striking that perfect balance between warm hospitality and polished service.||Her recommendations were spot on, and she went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect for us. Ana really elevated the whole experience and left us feeling so well looked after.||A lovely hotel, great food, and truly exceptional service – especially thanks to Ana, who made our lunch extra special. We can’t wait to return!

Its a beautiful building, really luxurious. The staff at check in were really friendly and helpful, my room was lovely, not huge but had everything I needed. I'd probably upgrade if I'd stayed with someone else. Only downsides I'd point out, the mattress in 313 needs replacing. You can feel the springs .the hair dryer didnt work properly. Only blew cold air. I did ask for another but I think the man on reception just thought I didnt know how to use it and it was never replaced. Breakfast was really tasty but there was no service, I only managed to get a coffee half way through my Breakfast and would have liked another but nobody came near my table to ask for one. The bar at night had a great atmosphere but the bar staff were a little unfriendly . I did enjoy my stay and would definitely try again.

I would wish to avoid writing this, but as the management appear not to care, I feel I have no choice. ||This is the fourth time I have stayed here and I have stayed at the Kimpton Fitzroy in London twice. And I am frankly appalled at the way I have been treated. ||I booked a premium king room for 4 nights direct with the hotel. Upon checking in I was informed I had been ‘upgraded’ which greatly surprised me as the next level of room is a suite and I am a solo traveller. I assumed maybe I’d been given a larger room or a particularly nice one. When accessing my room I found two small double beds, not the king I had booked. ||When trying to rectify this with reception, they suggested I had booked a premium room which isn’t automatically a king. All of this became incredibly confusing - the manager seemed very perturbed that I’d been told I’d been upgraded when checking in, and she used phrases such as ‘all IHG hotels do this’ etc, and she also assumed I’d booked using booking . com rather than directly.||This woman also told me that rooms are allocated on arrival - but I had been at the hotel and had made myself known to reception from 11.30am that morning. None of it seemed to make sense, and I’m not entirely sure she was convinced herself by what she was telling me. The member of reception staff next to her seemed incredibly uncomfortable. ||They refused to change the room on the basis that the hotel was fully booked (it was - but this was 4pm in the afternoon so surely not all of the guests who allegedly needed to be allocated to rooms had checked in?). However, they offered to move me to the room I had actually booked on the 3rd night of my stay.||Upon further reflection, and being absolutely certain that the room I had booked was indeed a premium king - I examined the hotel website and found that their ‘premium’ rooms are roughly about £4-£10 a night more expensive than their premium king rooms. This seemed incredibly odd, given that they are arguably a lower ‘class’ of room as they’re allocated on arrival. ||I deduce that what the hotel have done is ‘upgraded’ me at the point of booking - this has allowed them to manoeuvre guests and ensure that all rooms are occupied. Of course, they couldn’t pull this off with a couple as they couldn’t be expected to sleep in separate beds, so I believe they have put me in a room with two small beds as a solo traveller in order so they can fill the other rooms, under the guise of an ‘upgrade’. ||Regarding moving me to the room I have booked and paid for - no one has made any attempt to contact me to move me to the room I booked. I am about to go to bed on my third night and while this was promised, it has not been addressed. ||The room I am in has none of the classic kimpton character or decor - which is a key selling point of the hotel. ||Other things: the coffee machine in my room (used to be nespresso machines but have been replaced by something else) does not work. The water pressure in the bathroom is poor. The bar and restaurant I found quite cold. And though I requested housekeeping upon leaving for dinner this evening, it has not been attended to. ||At upwards of £1300 for a 4 night stay excluding breakfast … I suppose I don’t need to explain the rating any further.

Beautiful hotel with a lot of character. Room was very spacious and clean (along with the bathroom). Very comfortable beds. Tea and milk provided. Convenient to restaurants. Happy hour included a soda, chips, wine or beer (small selection, but it was a nice touch). 1 block from the train station.

Honestly one of my better hotels stays during me business travels, greeted by the lovely receptionist Mariyam. She detailed for myself and my colleague the hotel’s fantastic layout, information regarding breakfast, dinner and anything else there was to know! | Honestly this made the experience all the more worth our time at the Kimpton, for me. It’s staff who make a stay memorable and Mariyam certainly made sure of that.
