Kimpton Da An

"Set the sceneThis former residential tower in Taipei’s buzzy Da An district blends in with its apartment-building neighbors and can easily go unnoticed for those strolling by. The interior, however, is a different story. Underneath the crimson-and-teal double-height statement ceiling in the lobby, a straight-lined visual feast plays out in a cozy living room and concrete-clad seating arrangements (where an honesty bar is stocked with ice-cold soda pops and beer on tap). Upstairs, rooms are spacious, teal-toned sanctuaries away from the city’s rush, while the 12th-floor restaurant is a destination in its own right for the fried chicken with seaweed mayo alone. What’s the backstory? For a city bursting with creative energy, Taipei has always been astonishingly short on exciting design hotels. The boutique-hotel savvy Kimpton group saw a gap in the market and transformed a former apartment building into the brand’s first Asian outpost. Shanghai-based architects Neri & Hu were enlisted with the interior design and created a minimalist masterpiece where typical Taiwanese architectural staples (tiled walls, window grills) mingle with arched walkways and a dash of mid-century modern–inspired bits and pieces, like the exposed orb-like bulbs hanging from metal pipes. What can we expect in our room?Rooms are pared-back but far from basic. Lots of blond wood with deep teal as the statement color, while bathrooms are white-and-steel affairs (save for some of the suites, where you can expect hot spring–like terrazzo to cover the floor and walls). There are other thoughtful touches too, like yoga mats and massage tools, as well as eco-friendly details: toothbrushes, combs, and other single-use items will only be given if you ask for them. How about the food and drink?Even if you’re not staying overnight, The Tavernist restaurant is worth a visit. Nomadic chef and Noma alum James Sharman has been given free rein over the kitchen and delivers an eclectic and ever-changing menu of dishes inspired by his travels around the globe: think ostrich tartare, scotch eggs, or snail-studded pork terrine. On the same floor, a cocktail bar continues the global theme with playful East-meets-West creations such as a Sichuan peppercorn–spiked sangria and a fresh riff on a whisky sour with black tea foam and scallop powder. What’s the crowd like?Despite the high-end feel, the hotel is remarkably casual. Everybody’s welcome, even furry friends, as long as they fit through the door. Instagram-snapping young things zip past elderly couples in the lobby and suited-up business bigwigs mingle with socks-in-sandals tourists during the daily social wine hour or free-flowing morning coffee. Anything to say about the service? The team is genuinely friendly and totally tuned-in. Whether checking in or coming back after a day traipsing around the city, a staff member will be waiting to welcome you back. What’s the neighborhood scene like?Da An is one of Taipei’s most cosmopolitan districts, and you could easily spend a day wandering around its grid of alleys packed with boutiques, cafes, and restaurants ranging from smart dining affairs and sceney drinking dens to local noodle joints. The hotel’s free rental bikes make exploring a breeze. Anything you’d change? Most rooms are entered through the bathroom. While it’s not a deal-breaker, it does feel a little odd. Also, a swimming pool would be nice in Taipei’s steamy weather. Is it worth it?Yes. Design junkies will love it, but the warm, switched-on service and restaurant dishing up comfort food from breakfast to dinner are the stand-out reasons to come here." - Chris Schalkx

My wife and I stayed at the Kimpton Da An on our trip to Taipei for our wedding anniversary. The hotel was in a great neighborhood, just a block off the main road and very close to a subway line. The entirety of the staff were exceptional. Friendly, courteous and attentive. They offer several complimentary food offerings throughout the day. Coffee and pastries in the morning, drinks and snacks in the late afternoon. Our room was clean and spacious. The wifi was also sufficient enough to do video calls without any issues. We have become big fans of this property after one visit, and we plan to stay here on our next trip to Taipei

The hotel features a simple and comfortable design and is extremely pet-friendly. We came across several adorable dogs/rabbits in the lobby or restaurant areas. The guest rooms are spacious, clean and cozy. The front desk and concierge staff were incredibly helpful, providing us with fantastic recommendations, made our Taipei trip truly memorable. It’s a hotel with outstanding service and a warm, personal touch!

Truly Exceptional Service I had a fantastic experience at this hotel. The staff were incredibly helpful, attentive, and just genuinely wonderful, they went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable throughout my stay, The location is also perfect very convenient and close to many shopping streets, with tons of great food options nearby. On my last day, I unfortunately sprained my ankle, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. They were so caring and supportive, which made a big difference during a stressful moment. I truly appreciated it, thanks to everyone on the team Highly recommend this hotel

No doubt, this is the best hotel I’ve stayed at in Taipei so far. The staff were both friendly and professional, and the room was modern, clean, and very comfortable. We had a wonderful night and slept incredibly well.||Although we requested an early check-in, the previous guest checked out late, so our room wasn’t ready until 3 PM. To make up for the wait, the hotel manager graciously invited us to the bar and offered complimentary cocktails — a thoughtful and generous gesture.||I’ve stayed at KIMPTON properties in New York and Dallas before, but none have offered this kind of hospitality when early check-in wasn’t possible. This truly set the Taipei location apart.

We live in Hualien, Taiwan and have been coming to the Kimpton Da'an for many years. It is one of our favorite places to stay when my wife and I visit Taipei. What makes this hotel so awesome is the cleanliness, the luxuriousness, and the exceptional level of service and high level of attention to detail. Matthew Lim, the General Manager, has done an incredible job of training and maintaining the staff and level of service. ||Whenever we come back to this hotel, it is like coming back home -- to a home away from home. Not only that, each time we return, the service has gotten *even* better.||Of most special note is Mr. Rohit Kumar. We are always happy to see him, as he epitomizes the pinnacle of service -- always, gracious, welcoming and helpful without being intrusive or overwhelming. He is a friendly face, always kind, warm, friendly and welcoming.||One thing that I always remember about Mr. Kumar is an event that happened several years ago. There was a crazy rain storm -- it was raining cats and dogs -- a real downpour. We had already checked out and were getting into a cab to take us to Songshan station, to get the train back to Hualien. The hotel has a very nice shelter for cars so we were not rained on at all getting into the cab. However, Mr. Kumar was thinking ahead for us. He asked if we had an umbrella for when we arrived at the train station. ||We did not. ||Through the window of the cab, Mr. Kumar handed us an umbrella to take with us. We didn't ask for it, nor did we expect it. We had already checked out. At most hotels, that means the transaction is over. But not with the Kimpton Da'an, and not with Mr. Kumar. When he handed us the umbrella through the taxicab window, we were deeply touched by this level of thoughtfulness and kindness. It was above and beyond the call of duty -- at least for any other hotel in Taipei. ||Not only that, it was very helpful when we got to Songshan train station!! Songshan doesn't have the same level of protection from the rain as the Kimpton Da'an, and without that umbrella, we would have been drenched walking from the street to the station entrance!! So we always remember the kindness of Mr. Kumar and the exceptional service of the Kimpton Da'an. ||During our current stay, we noticed a couple of staff member wearing Golden Key emblems on their lapels. Although Mr. Kumar was not one of the staff memeber wearing this emblem, I write this review in order to give my full hearted and enthusiastic recommendation for his inclusion in this honor. ||For what it's worth as a long time guest, I believe that Mr. Kumar deserves such recognition and I sincerely recommend him for the Golden Key. After observing years of his exceptional service, he truly deserves it. ||Thank you, and looking forward to our next visit.

Location: Great. Staff service is also fine. Overall, the hotel is not very large. The lobby is very compact. However, the biggest inconvenience of this hotel is the structure of the room. When you open the front door, it’s a bathroom space with a sink, and the bathroom and toilet share one door. If you‘re a solo traveler, that might not be a problem. It’s quite inconvenient if it‘s a couple or family.

I would recommend to anyone staying in Taipei! The staff is very helpful. Excellent customer service. Loved my room and although I didn’t get to enjoy all the amenities (bar, dining, gym) they looked amazing. The view from the 13th floor is beautiful. The location of the hotel is close to the MRT station and a lot of food and shopping! Will definitely be back!

Google
Location is awesome and that’s why I picked it. But the hotel itself doesn’t quite meet 5 star hotel standards. No bathtub, no spacious closet area, the room floor reminds me of a locker room and entry is like a bathroom with the tile everywhere. The breakfast was the biggest surprise: it’s a la carte (I have breakfast included in my room rate for business travel) and takes forever, and there are limited vegetarian options - and the food just isn’t that good. Versus a breakfast buffet you might expect. It’s fine and no major flaws but not really a full 5 star hotel.

Yelp
This is a fantastic hotel, resulting from the renovation of a boring residential building in one of Taipei's coolest areas. The rooms are quite beautiful and comfortable. They are big and have a great shower, and some of them even a large square bath. They homage Taipei's tiles tradition. The lobby is quite active, basic coffee and croissants breakfast is offered here for free. And it has a nice courtyard garden. Only weaker point is the restaurant. The days I was there there was no breakfast menu, and as someone who travels with a tide schedule, breakfast are often the opportunities to know more about the country's cuisine. Not here. Overall, great place to stay when in Taipei.

Yelp
All stuffs are very friendly. I feel everyone wants to be my best friends here. This is very cool low-key boutique hotel that has good elegant smell in the lobby. Bathroom was amazing with cool white tiles, rainforest shower and a deep soaking tub. Plenty of heavenly smelling bath amenities. Guest room: My favorite part of the stay is the coffee station in the guest room. I smiled when I saw that the espresso pods and creamers are kept in a little green replica of the Tatung classic Taiwanese rice cooker ;) The bed is so comfortable. And of course, you can't complete your vacation without a fancy Japanese Toto toilet in the room. Location: it locates in a quiet residential street and only 5 minutes walk to Zhongxiao Fuxing Station #3 exit. And is across the street from two SOGO department stores and close to a underground shopping area too. Lots of luxury retailers tucked away in the neighborhood around the hotel. Totally a shopaholic's paradise. Dining: my local Taiwanese friends all said the restaurant on the 12th floor is a hidden gem. Too bad I didn't get to try it this time. There are many good local restaurants close by including one Michelin rated restaurant.
