Rancho Pescadero

"[Editor's note: As of June 18, 2023, this property is temporarily closed.] Why book?To connect with nature, oneself, and the communities of artists and surfers in nearby Todos Santos. Set the sceneAt-adults only Rancho Pescadero, desert landscapes and on-site farms make clear that everything here is about nature. It can be visualized as botanical garden first, resort second. Thirty generous acres make it feel like you have the place to yourself, and yet it’s not so sprawling to require being chauffeured by golf cart. As such, I found myself blissfully lost near the chicken coop, where chef Sandro Falbo found me and asked if I wanted to select a few eggs, walk to the garden, and pluck herbs and vegetables for breakfast made at the open-air restaurant, Botánica. Experiences like this weren’t uncommon during my days at Rancho Pescadero: I followed the scent of barbacoa beckoned to a large Sunday brunch, I spotted whales breach the Pacific, I joined an essential oils class in the flower garden, and I learned the oral history of the resort from “Pescaderoites,” a passionate group of guests who have been returning to the resort since its inception, when there were only 12 guest rooms. Now, there may be 103 keys, but they assured me the spirit and ethos hasn't changed one bit. The backstoryIn the mid 1990s, Lisa Harper wanted a break as a retail fashion CEO and spent nearly a year camping out on a secluded beach that would soon become Rancho Pescadero. She bought the parcel of land from poblano farmers in 1997. She pretty much single handedly planted trees, drew up plans, and got to work on a hotel project that would soon become beloved by the “it” crowds of Los Angeles. The roomsDesigned for indoor-outdoor living, the rooms are carefully arranged around the views, and 98 percent of accommodations look out on the ocean. All of the rooms have plenty of space to unwind, and the ocean-front suites level up the experience further, each with its own fire pit, private plunge pool, and outdoor shower. Food and drinkAfter my happenstance tour with chef Sandro Falbo, I encountered him again during the Botánica signature smoke tasting menu, where each course arrived in a wooden box opened table-side allowing the fragrant smoke to fill the air. Falbo said that the charcoal treatment was one of his favorite ways to showcase the bounty from the surrounding gardens. Everything I tasted was insanely fresh, balanced, and indulgent without feeling heavy. Falbo’s passion shines through every dish, from the slow-roasted lamb tacos to the garden salad. A fine-dining seafood concept and a vegan casual spot are opening soon, too. The spaThe James Turrell-evoking, circular, indoor-outdoor 25,000-square-foot spa is the pièce de résistance of the property, offering a bounty of well-being practices, treatments, classes, and a lap pool. During my own experience with the wellness programs, relaxing to the masterful direction of our teacher during a sound bath, I found myself next to a couple of tech execs and a girls' trip. Beforehand, I totally got my butt whipped at the state-of-the-art gym, which had all of the machines and equipment anyone could want. The areaLocated an hour north of Cabo San Lucas near Todos Santos is a long dirt road that leads to the resort. During the 15 minute ride, I could feel my stress melt away with each bump in the road until finally I arrived at the front door. I passed through it, stepping into the botanical gardens, wanting only to soak up as much time as possible at this desert paradise. The serviceThe staff was laid-back, friendly, and seemed genuinely excited about Rancho. Eco effortThe footprint is minimal. Harper and husband and co-owner Billy Moore have placed great importance on sustainability. They've implemented expensive programs like transplanting thousands of plants moved during construction to their original locations, creating a solar farm, and installing a desalination plant. But they are also concerned about the strains that a luxury resort can bring to rural areas. They have created a housing complex for employees, implemented a technical education program for the community, and invested in a clean-air incinerator for the resort’s waste and also for local use. Anything left to mention?Waking up on my last day in my elegant-yet-beachy guest suite, designed head-to-toe by Harper (of course), and jumping into the private plunge pool overlooking the crashing waves, I found myself thinking, This is true well-being. A place to reconnect with what matters most and feel confident that the investment in this stay is eco-responsible and helping to uplift the people who live here." - Scott Bay

This place is stunning! 5 star experience. It had the wow factor at every turn from pool to restaurant. The pool area is spectacular. We ate at Botanica and the food and service were great. This place is like Flora Farms but better and not as busy. More zen like.

This is a very special resort. Nested in the middle of the desert, they’ve done a perfect job, blending the architecture with the natural environment. The service is very spectacular. This is the type of hotel that’s constantly looking to delight and surprise you. They have two restaurants on site that are fantastic. The pool is on the beach and is serviced with a full staff. Botanical garden on site provides a wonderful walking environment. They also have goats in the back, which are a delight to say hello to in the morning.

What a magical stay we just had at Mas Olas. I almost don't want to bring attention to this hidden gem because it was so peaceful and magical. What a beautiful resort, amazing staff, incredible food and outstanding spa/gym. Also, the gardens that surround this property are absolutely magical. We went for four nights for a quiet and relaxing couples getaway without our young son. It was exactly that. If you are looking for noise and nightlife, this is not your place. But if you are looking for outstanding food, spa, pool and relaxation, then look no further.

The Kimpton Mas Olas was a wonderful last-minute find; I'd eagerly returrn for a longer stay. The property is covered with gorgeous gardens that give the place a magical feel. We spent lots of time wandering through them, when we weren't swimming in the hotel's several lovely pools. Our oceanfront rooms were charming and comfortable, and the food at the hotel's signature restaurant was outstanding. This is a gem of a boutique hotel that feels happily removed from the Cabo mega resort scene. It's a truly unique and special place -- a beautiful place to unwind.

One of our top 5 vacations ever! I cannot say enough about how amazing our visit was. We’ve been to this property 5 times and it keeps getting better. So relaxing, beautiful, natural and frankly delicious! We cannot wait to go back. Love to Armando, Augustine, Jonathan, chef Sandro and Andrea at the spa. You all model customer service and more like spoiled us!

Wow, Mas Olas is amazing! We stayed three nights for a quick getaway and it was perfect. Everything was great from the food, service, room, views, and amenities. All the employees were welcoming and kind. I loved the location, as it was remote and peaceful. Totally recommend booking! FYI, might want to look at transportation round trip options as we booked the service through the hotel for a total of $500 from Cabo airport.

The Kimpton Mas Olas has been open for about a year and seems to still be finding its mojo. (Note there are older reviews on TripAdvisor, but they are for the property's prior hotel, which was a Hyatt that experienced an unfortunate tragedy.) It is gorgeous and well maintained. The pools and gardens/grounds are serene. There was not problem securing pool or beach lounges at any time. But we encountered a number of kinks. Our room's a/c stopped working two of our five nights, allegedly due to recurring power failures. We had an ocean-view room, but the view was largely obstructed by plants on the terrace and one large tree; we found it odd that we were given this room when the hotel was fairly empty. One of the three treadmills stops suddenly during use (we told the hotel to take it out of service, but they did not). Because the hotel was not busy, it rotated restaurants (one is water-side and one is not), bars, and staff. We were told prior to our stay and then when we checked in that we did not need reservations at the Kahal restaurant, but when we went on our first night to Kahal, they had no table for us without our having to wait. Two nights later, we went again to Kahal having made a reservation (specifically at a booth with a fire pit), but the fire pit did not work, and they would not move us to a table with a working fire pit. The restaurants and food are excellent, but the prices are very high; we ended up eating out a few nights after our unpleasant experience at Kahal and had good meals at Lucky 23 and Agricole, though not at Hierbabuena, which seems to be the concierge's favorite. All in all, despite our issues, we did like the hotel, its beauty/serenity, and its friendly staff. Once it has attracted more of a following and works out its kinks, this no doubt will be a very hot spot!

Just returned from 4 perfect days with my daughter over Mother’s Day weekend at this Kimpton property. Where to begin about this amazing place, a stunningly beautiful resort on a beach that seems to go on forever. As previous reviewers have touted, the staff is wonderful, kind, and in all ways go above and beyond. An example is when I asked if I could get some herbal tea for our room and one of the staff (Luiso?) brought me a basket of freshly cut and labeled herbs from the botanical garden on site, as well as an infuser to make our own herbal blend. Mind blown! And when we brought our rental car back one day after a particularly dusty outing and I asked the valet if he could possibly wash the back window for us, he washed the entire vehicle! We loved our beautiful oceanfront room, with a large terrace and an unobstructed view of the ocean. A breakfast pack with apples, baked goods, and spa water was delivered to our room each morning, and there was a turn down service at night. Unlimited bottled water is also available (the sink water in the rooms is not filtered). The property is sprawling, but the staff will pick you up in a golf cart and take you to wherever you want to go if you don’t feel like walking, and guest services quickly responded by text message to any requests. The spa is beautiful and the sauna and steam facilities are complimentary for guests at the resort, as are yoga classes every morning with Lila, who was an excellent instructor. The gym is open air and fully equipped with weights, kettlebells, plyo equipment, cardio machines and peloton bikes, etc. Three serene pools on site, including an infinity pool with swim up bar and view of the ocean next to the Kahal restaurant. The botanical garden is beautiful, and when we were there, there were rabbits and bunnies in a large hutch, as well as chickens and ducks, adjacent to the garden. Dinner at Kahal our first night included a beautiful sunset view and phenomenal service - the chef even surprised us with a special gluten-free/dairy free dessert! The meal was so good we returned two nights later with a request for a fire pit table. Sunday brunch at Botanica, also on property, looked amazing. The whole experience was pampering and relaxing from beginning to end. We can’t wait to return.
