Suzhou, Jiangsu Province — a city where ancient dynastic charm weaves effortlessly into rapid modernization. Home to UNESCO-listed classical gardens, stone bridges, and winding canals, Suzhou remains one of China’s most compelling escapes. Growing up in nearby Shanghai, I’ve long seen Suzhou as my ideal retreat for slowing down, resetting, and reconnecting with a different cultural rhythm.||In the heart of the central Gusu District stands the Kimpton Suzhou Bamboo Grove, IHG’s first Kimpton in Mainland China. Built on the footprint of the storied Bamboo Grove Hotel of the 1990s, this property blends renovated heritage with the sophistication and flair that define the Kimpton brand.||After two prior visits with mixed impressions, I was curious—almost compelled—to see what a third stay might reveal. And so, here is my follow-up review.||Pre-Arrival: A Thoughtful Beginning||For a quick getaway from Shanghai, I booked a one-night stay from November 12th to 13th, using 27,000 IHG One Rewards points for an Essential Room. An hour before arrival, I received a proactive call from Guest Services confirming my estimated arrival time and personal preferences.||Upon recognizing my IHG Diamond Elite status and prior stays, the hotel generously upgraded me to a 1 King Bedroom River View Suite, setting a positive tone even before I stepped foot onto the property.||Arrival: Warm Welcomes & Familiar Faces||Arriving once again through the bamboo-lined entrance, the hotel felt as grand as ever—Suzhou-style architecture framed by gently swaying groves of bamboo that immediately evoke a sense of calm.||A new addition since my previous stays was the IHG Elite reception area, a thoughtful touch that elevated the arrival experience.||Check-in was handled by Lucy, alongside Director of Rooms Barton Yin, and—unforgettably—the hotel’s beloved mascot, Kylie, a gentle Labrador Retriever who embodies the warmth of the Kimpton brand.||It was also my first time meeting General Manager Nabin Gurung, a seasoned leader who has opened some of IHG’s most celebrated properties including Hotel Indigo Anji and Hotel Indigo Suzhou Grand Canal. Our conversation about hotel operations, evolving industry trends, and travel experiences was genuinely inspiring and set the tone for a memorable visit.||1 King Bedroom River View Suite (5203): A Well-Designed Sanctuary||After checking in, Barton personally escorted me to Suite 5203, located in one of the compound’s quieter sub-buildings. Accessible via a semi-private elevator, the suite spans 90 sqm and includes:||- A separate living room|- A dining area|- A spacious bedroom|- Walk-in closet area|- A full bathroom|- A powder room|- Two private patios overlooking tranquil gardens and canals||Bedroom||The bedroom features a plush king bed, a Marshall speaker, a Samsung flatscreen TV, marble bedside tables, and a patio with peaceful canal views. Suite-exclusive turndown service included mineral water, bedding refresh, and a charming customized amenity (often postcards or a Kimpton Bunny plush).||Bathroom||The main bathroom includes:||- A freestanding soaking tub|- A rainforest shower|- Dual vanities|- An electric toilet cubicle||As always, the Atelier Bloem amenities remain one of Kimpton’s strongest brand signatures—and still the best bath product line in the entire IHG portfolio.||The powder room offers a second electric toilet and an additional freestanding sink.||Living & Dining Areas||The living room features a large flatscreen TV, Bose sound system, comfortable sofa, and a compact workspace. The dining area includes:||- A beautiful tea set|- A well-appointed pantry with minibar|- A complimentary first round of beverages|- A welcome amenity of fresh fruit|- A personalized handwritten note by Barton|- A beautifully decorated cake featuring Kylie—an unexpected but delightful touch||Despite a few minor cleaning and aging issues, the suite remains stylish, comfortable, and unquestionably worth its approximate ¥4,000 RMB / $560 USD nightly market value.||Bar 168 & Kimpton Social Hour: Elegant, Intimate, and Signature Kimpton||Bar 168 is one of the property’s most picturesque spaces, positioned beside an infinity water garden and stone courtyard. Inside, the bar is cozy and intimate with Suzhou-inspired design details.||I redeemed my ¥120 RMB Raid the Bar credit for a beautifully crafted cocktail by bartender Sawen, with warm service from Nila.||From 5 PM to 6 PM, the hotel hosts its signature Kimpton Social Hour, offering:||- Wines|- Sparkling wine|- Beer|- Soft drinks|- A rotating daily cocktail|- Small sweet and savory canapés||It’s an experience that brings guests together and one of Kimpton’s most distinctive global traditions.||Dinner & Breakfast at The Grove: Thoughtful, Elevated Dining||The Grove, the hotel’s Black Pearl-recognized restaurant, showcases modern New Huaiyang cuisine under the direction of Executive Chef Michael Shi and Director of F&B Sophie.||Sophie curated a solo tasting menu for me (¥500 RMB / $70 USD) including:||- Fresh fruit amuse bouche|- Four types of cold appetizers|- Matsutake tofu soup|- Stewed meatball with hairy crab meat|- Crispy beef cubes with lime|- Signature Fried Shrimp with Truffle Sauce|- Braised fish noodle soup|- Mango sago dessert||While a few dishes could benefit from small refinements, the overall dinner was pleasant and thoughtfully composed. Service from Sophie, Helena, Minnie, and the kitchen team was excellent.||Breakfast||Breakfast was a standout—far exceeded my expectations with its variety and quality. Highlights:||- Scrambled eggs with parmesan and almonds|- Suzhou-style wonton soup|- Fresh coconut|- Seasonal fruit|- A thoughtfully curated hot and cold buffet||Nabin joined me for breakfast, allowing us to continue discussing the stay and the property’s ongoing evolution.||Facilities: Indoor Pool, Fitness Center & Activity Room||The lower-level recreation area includes:||- A warm, spacious indoor pool|- A comfortable hot tub|- A fully equipped fitness center|- A multifunction community room for workshops and lifestyle events||Everything was clean, well-maintained, and appropriately staffed.||Departure: A Heartfelt Farewell||Checkout came too quickly. Barton and Nabin took my feedback seriously and assured me that areas of improvement would be addressed. The concierge team even helped ship my Suzhou souvenirs back to Shanghai—a thoughtful gesture that exemplifies Kimpton’s service philosophy.||My departure was warm, memorable, and left me excited for my next stay.||Conclusion: One of Suzhou’s True Hotel Gems||My return visit to the Kimpton Suzhou Bamboo Grove reaffirmed why this property is one of Suzhou’s most distinctive hospitality experiences. Whether you pay in points or cash, the stay delivers strong value through:||- Genuine, attentive service|- Beautifully designed spaces|- High-quality dining|- Excellent suite comfort|- A leadership team that truly cares||One of the most meaningful aspects of this stay was getting to know Nabin, who leads with passion, professionalism, and a deep understanding of guest experience. His entire team—Barton, Sophie, Lucy, Helena, Minnie, and many others—embodies what a Kimpton stay should feel like.||I look forward to returning again soon to the Kimpton Suzhou Bamboo Grove.||It is, unquestionably, one of Suzhou’s most memorable hotels.
