7 Adventurous Things to Do in Anchorage, Alaska | Condé Nast Traveler

"Recommended to me as a reliable place to see wildlife, Kincaid Park was a common local suggestion and a natural extension of the coastal trail ride for a good chance at moose and other animals." - Jason Nark

Google
This is a very beautiful park. We went to play disc golf for our first time, everyone was very friendly and was out just enjoying the day too. People had their dogs off leash and on leash we did not have any problems with either, very well behaved. They did have Warning posted all around where a Moose just had her baby to be aware and stay away from the area. We did not run into her but others did see her and advised others not to go that way.

Google
Beautiful area with lots of trails for hikers and cyclists, some fully tarmacked. Some trails lead to the beach area with great views (see picture). Many of the trails pass through dense areas of trees and the other vegetation. Please stay aware in case of bears, and particularly moose, as we saw two in under 3 miles of hiking, only perhaps 30 metres off the trail (spot the young bull in my photo).

Google
I came here to see moose and did not fail! We walked a trail 10/15 minutes and saw a male moose enjoying lunch! Free parking and entry was a huge plus. We parked near clean restrooms. Would highly recommend!

Google
This is absolutely a nice park to do multiple activities. The park is huge with a lot of trails there. The park has an atea where families can gather. We were able to celebrate our 14 year old birthday 🎂 there. It was such a nice summer day.

Google
It is a beautiful park with a lot of trails. You can spend time on the open soccer field, hike, bike, and picnic. Beautiful views, and if you are lucky you may see some wildlife!

Tommy L.

Google
Huge park got an amazing history in it. The view of the coastline was amazing. Many different trail and ski line Beaware of the closing time, or else you will be lock down like i do.

Google
We enjoyed the hike here with a great view. It took us about 30 mins one way to the beach. Many people bike there. It's a great place to spend a few hours in an afternoon.

Kimberly C.

Google
I had heard this was the best place to go to see a moose so it was our first stop once we were in Anchorage. And we were lucky enough to see a bull moose! We also visited again on our last day in Anchorage and saw a black bear.

Yelp
Beautiful park with access to the costal trail! Saw a moose not too far from the parking lot. Nice paved paths and large parking lot. Public restrooms and maps available.

Yelp
This year I spend most of winter exploring Kincaid park via my cross country skis. Holy cow the park is HUGE! Previously I've only really explored the paved trail going down to the beach and connecting to Earthquake Park. If you are a beginner xc skier, I recommend starting at the stadium and slowly doing the smaller mize loop. This is where I built my confidence for 2-3 weeks before moving to the "blue rated" Jodphur loop. Kincaid has so much to offer and I am so glad I had the opportunity to explore it from the perspective of my skis!

Yelp
This park is enormous. 1500 acres. There is an entire 18 hole frisbee golf course inside of it, which I only recently discovered. Moose and bear are common sightings, so pack your spray and steer clear accordingly. My personal draw is the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, which runs for 10-11 miles along the exterior of the park and offers great views of the coast. Free parking and plenty of it. The Yeti dogs food truck is usually parked outside. There is a complimentary bike repair kit, including an air pump, at the top of the Coastal Trail, in front of the soccer field.

Yelp
Pretty sure Kincaid is the place to go if you have guests in town and they want to see a moose! Kincaid is a massive park located in Anchorage near the airport. On a sunny day you can get a clear view of Denali from the chalet. Lots of activities going on. They just have gotten a cell tower installed recently as you have perfect service in the entire park now (ATT) Parking can be tough if it's a super nice day or an event is going on. For some events offsite parking is offered with bus transportation.

Yelp
Random park we stumbled upon while we were waiting to check into our airbnb. What a beautiful little park with beautiful views of the ocean. Lots of friendly locals here. Nice place for a walk.

Yelp
This place just has it all. Every time I go I just wish I had more time to explore. There are picnic locations, soccer fields, single tracks, beach walks, woods. There's always something more to do. This time I was there for a run. I wasn't exactly sure where to run since I've always been on a bike when I've been here. It was actually pretty easy. 1. Just drive all the way as far into the park as you can go. 2. Park (that's a hard one!) 3. Walk toward the soccer field. You're gonna hang a right and head down a path before you make it to the soccer field. The path is nice and busy. Stay to your right. Bikers, peeps with dogs will be around. Lots of runners, too! Bear spray: This is a toss up. The trail seems to be very busy. BUT there were several stretches where I was all alone. I'd take it. Watch for wildlife. It's everywhere!

Matt M.

Yelp
So big and so much to see. Pretty unique disc golf course with amazing views and lots of wildlife.

Yelp
I'm ashamed to say that, my first 2 years in Anchorage...I never went to Kincaid Park. Yeah, I suck. I don't even have a good excuse, I really don't. The park is most well known for mountain biking in the summer and XC skiing in the winter. There are an F-TON of Moose here, so many. Probably your best bet for a guaranteed Moose sighting in the greater Anchorage area. I love the lush trees and greenery here, this is going to sound weird, but it actually reminds me of the Live Oak forests of coastal Georgia. There's decent beach access here, too. Worth a visit, don't be like me!

Yelp
An incredible spot right in South Anchorage. There is something for everyone here - biking and hiking trails in the summer, and cross country skiing, biathlon, etc. in the winter. The Coastal Trail takes you around the edge of the park and holds good odds you'll see a moose! The Nordic skiing in the winter is world class. Plenty of parking areas and trail accesses around the perimeter of the park and of course in the center. The park absorbs crowds well and never seems packed. Great views of the bay and mudflats from the coast. A true gem of the city!

Yelp
Great park and a great setting. If you have time to check it out I would. We sat down and enjoyed the scenery. Had some lunch at a picnic table.

Yelp
Kincaid Park is a gem in the middle of town. It's a beautiful and HUGE space with mountain views and great trails that you really have to take a little time to explore while visiting Anchorage. I stopped by twice to check out the trails and to find some wildlife to shoot. (I'm a pro photographer, not hunting at the moment! LOL!) I hiked around for quite a few miles and saw some awesome fall color, but no moose on my journey. I did get a really beautiful view of Denali across the water with some gorgeous autumn color though, so I feel it was time well spent. If you're a hiker, a mountain biker, a cross country skiier, or a runner-you'll LOVE this park. There is a trail just for you here. You must check it out when in town! I'm a fan!

Yelp
Awesome park with a spectacular view of the bay and a 360 view of the mountains- so it's great for sunrise AND sunset if you park down at the main parking area. But most of the park is heavily wooded with trails galore for biking and running. Cracked me up cause I saw a fitness mom letting her dog run free while she had the baby carriage sled hooked up to herself. Can get quite cold here in the open spaces since the wind whips up from the water, but along the trails you're sheltered by the trees. It's recommended for gals to travel in pairs since so much of the trails are heavily wooded and remote, but other than that, this is a fitness and nature lover's paradise.

Yelp
Kincaid Park is a longtime favorite of mine. From a chalet with visitor's brochures to a covered area with grills and a children's park to direct access to the Inlet to motocross dunes to hiking trails to poor dead wildlife that's been stuffed for display inside, Kincaid has a lot to offer! In the summer you'll find live music, it's the starting places for many races, oftentimes you'll see moose and other wildlife. It's a great place for a picnic or a hike or just to get some sunshine and fresh air. The only downside is it's the opposite end of town for a lot of people; but it's not like we're in NYC and it takes two hours to get there. If you know how to drive right it's a pretty quick commute for a pretty cool spot.

Yelp
Kincaid park is huge. It has plenty of trails for everyone to share and enjoy. Trails are well kept. You will see lots of locals and tourists alike. Beautiful backdrops to your nature excursion no matter where you are in the park. There are lots of flat grassy areas to relax, and/or watch the kids playing in the recently constructed playground. There is a beautiful soccer field with great stairs for running. Being someone who hates using port-a-potty's, I really appreciate Kincaid Chalets' bathrooms with plumbing. If you walk the trail long enough, you will be able to access the beach. If you are alone with a stroller, you will have to risk leaving it just before the steep downward hill that connects the trail to the beach. In the summer months there are people who solely come to Kincaid Park to access the beach and/or party. It's not uncommon to see a group of young 20-somethings, in beachwear, lugging coolers, speakers, and floaters. Lots of Yelpers mention the moose that you will see. Very true. Every time I've gone to Kincaid Park I've seen at least one or two. The trails thankfully, seem wide enough, that I've never been stuck in harms way. To be honest, I haven't walked too far into the trails of Kincaid Park yet, only because the deeper you go in, you are really in the woods. People mention moose, but there are definitely bears. Unless you are biking, I would err on the side of caution and have bear spray handy. I usually play it smart and stay around the more populated parts of the trails. The sunsets here are beautiful, you'll get great photos here. Bring your mosquito repellent in the summer months! Lastly, the main gate to the park closes promptly at 10pm. Yes, I've been stuck inside before :) luckily we were able to phone someone who was kind enough to let us out. This was years ago, so I wouldn't risk it. Enjoy!

Yelp
My review of local parks continues with Kincaid Park. This park is one of Anchorage's most popular and provides panoramic views of Cook Inlet with the mountain range called the Sleeping Lady (Mount Susitna) in the background as well as downtown Anchorage and the Chugach Mountain Range. The park itself has a wide variety of bike trails and hiking paths that wind its way around the woods as well as a soccer field, a recreational center used for parties or wedding receptions, and numerous picnic table areas to enjoy the surrounding scenery for BBQs or potlucks. It was sunny with a cool breeze when I arrived at the park around noon time. The park was already full of people bicycling, playing Frisbee, jogging, or laying out blankets on the wide field of green grass to enjoy the sunshine. This park also provides an awesome close-up view of commercial flights taking off or landing at the airport. Some planes are close enough to the ground in certain areas of the park that you can wave to the pilots in the cockpit standing on top of a hill while they're flying overhead! The soccer field also has multi-level outdoor stadium seating that will also give you a great overhead view of the games as well as Cook Inlet with your smartphone or camera. This place is a definite must-see for tourists or people new to the area and there have been plenty of moose sightings here as well. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail runs along the edge of this park going all the way to downtown and also provides a fantastic view of Denali (Mount McKinley) in the distance as well as Fire Island across the inlet. The park is equally beautiful in the winter time with snow-capped mountains and a surreal view of the frozen reflective ice of the water off the coast. I definitely recommend this park as a regular stop during the summer months for enjoying all sorts of outdoor activities.

Yelp
Kincaid Park is a 1,516.78-acre (6.1382 km2) municipal park in Anchorage, Alaska, located at 9401 W. Raspberry Road. Noted for Nordic skiing trails, in snowless months the park is frequented by runners, bikers, hikers, archers, dog-trainers, motocross users, disc golfers, and rollerskiers. The park is mostly forested, with birch, cottonwood, and spruce. Wildlife includes moose, lynx, bear, fox, eagles, porcupines, and many others. I've seen moose from 30 feet away, just beautiful to watch. The sunsets are some of the best I've ever seen. My favorite memory here is dirt biking through the many trails and exploring all the nook and crannies of this great area.

Yelp
On my last day in Alaska, since I hadn't seen a Moose up close, I decided to visit here based on the reviews. As soon as I parked my car, a couple of them showed up. So yeah, this is the best place to find moose in the city.

Yelp
Love Love Love Kincaid Park!!!!! This park is another one of my must stop places when visiting ANC. My last 4 trips up I've taken friends and family here specifically for the moose. If you want to see moose in their natural setting KINCAID is the easiest spot I know of... I kid you not you can drive through all the way to the end which houses the recreation center (I believe) and all the way back out and you are bound to see a moose (unless I just get lucky everyyyyyy time!) :) As others have mentioned, this is a great park for biking, jogging, cross country skiing, and roller skiing - just be cautious not to disturb the wildlife (moose in particular) foraging alongside the trails!

Yelp
Great, well-maintained trails in this park. We saw five moose, including one bull, and three black bears. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Yelp
The great outdoors inside city limits. Hiking, sking, lake swimmimg, canoeing, fishing, soccer, beaches, wildlife viewing, you name it Kincaid has it. You can probably even find someone to smoke a bowl or bum a beer from if that's your thing. Best recreation area inside city limits in Alaska.

Yelp
It's rare for a big city to have such a deep and beautiful forest one can explore. Kincaid is an experience I wish I could share with all. Photos of the woods never do it justice. You have to 'be' there. I always take the downhill trail to the beach. The return hike is great exercise. The park is not without its dangers. I always bring bear spray, knife and stick. I use the stick to rap on the walkway to make noise. I've notice that the bells people wear can only be heard within a couple feet. The whack of a stick, though, can be heard a great distance away. Kincaid has numerous moose. I was photographing a mama moose at a distance when her calf snuck up from behind and nearly bumped into me. A lot of things can happen quickly so keep a 360 eye out at all times...

Yelp
Went to a hike to the beach front. Saw tons of moose when entering and leaving the park

Yelp
Kincaid Park has trails on trails on trails. Don't forget your bug and bear spray here and maybe a handhald GPS or printed map if you plan on exploring them all. Earlier this year they came out with the "Find Yourself in Kincaid Park" app. Ironically enough ... I've never really gotten service in the park, so I wouldn't really trust the app to lead the way. Kincaid Park is home to lots of wildlife so be moose and bear aware. During the summer months enjoy the extra sunlight to hike around or bike the trails, some of which connect to the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Towards the end of Raspberry Road you can catch soccer games and so I've only heard there is also a motocross park in the area. During the winter months bring out your sleds and take a slide down the hills towards the chalets. If you're thinking about having a special gathering, you can also consider renting out either the chalets, sundeck or picnic shelters. In passing I have seen family reunions, work parties and even weddings gatherings down there. It's an easy and quiet park area. Not too much going on, but if you're needing your outdoors feel, this would be a great start.

Yelp
A little far out from downtown Anchorage out past airport, but let me tell you the sunset view is awesome. Drive all the way to the end where there is a big parking lot and like a big events building and walk strait towards the sunset and there is a viewing deck where you wont be disappointed.
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
Very nice park but needs better maps and signage on network of trails. We never found the beach and met another group that never found it either. Parking was adequate and park has potential for 5 stars with better signage.
google avatar

Janessa G.

Yelp
I love this place. There are so many trails on the way also, my personal favorite is Middle Earth. I definitely recommend just wandering around all of these trails, especially if you prefer view over a hard hike.
google avatar

Ria J.

Yelp
The maze of Nordic skiing trails is also perfect for running on soft dirt, though it can be too muddy after a rain.
google avatar

Polly W.

Yelp
Gets a five star for all the awesome moose photos I got. What can I say - where I'm from we only see moose in the zoo. I cruised through the park though and I thought it was beautiful, clean, and all the right amenities. Families out enjoying the day. Moose are cool!

Gwendolyn Z.

Yelp
Interesting park - we saw lots of moose! Seemed like in the winter it was primarily for skiing and dog sledding though. It had some beautiful views and great winter scenery.

Babaji R.

Yelp
A great place to see moose, bike, or take a walk out of the mud on rainy days. In winter, if the snow is good, the cross country skiing is excellent.

Karen K.

Yelp
offers the easiest way to get deep in the woods right in town. Tons and tons of gorgeous hiking trails. Views of Mt. McKinley, Mt. Susitna and Cook Inlet. View Turnagain Arm. Park at the Kincaid Outdoor Center or "chalet". Any time of the year you may find moose among the thick foliage that borders the road. Black bears, snowshoe hare, eagles all sorts of birds!

Julie S.

Yelp
Love this place. I go almost every day during the summer to look for moose. Great trails and place to get away from it all.
