Always great to stay here as a family - reasonably priced rooms always clean, well presented, meet all our needs as well as being close to town. While facilities are a bit dated, it ticks most of the boxes for us. The only negative for us is lack of parking - caused frustration each night we stayed. Staff ALWAYS exceptionally friendly and accomodating, great to have breakfast each day and even Foxy got looked after by the very friendly and obviously sweet cleaning staff member that attended our room today - we’ve stayed four times in the last two years and will always come back :)

We had a very nice stay. I'm glad I read through quite a number of reviews & we made our decision after weighing up the good & the bad. The rooms were fine, bed was comfortable, shower was nice. Breakfast was a nice way to finish off our stay, not a huge variety to choose from but it was a good hearty breakfast that we enjoyed.||The staff were great, it was a busy weekend & they did what they could to keep us happy (gave us a tray & allowed us to take breakfast up to the room for one of our family who couldn't make it down to the restaurant).||We did have one issue on our stay, but that was resolved easily.

Kingsgate Hotel Dunedin is a convenient place to stay, with its central location making it easy to walk to the Octagon and explore the city. The rooms are tidy and comfortable, offering a relaxing space after a day out. Staff were welcoming and helpful, which added to the overall experience. The property shows a bit of age, but it’s clean, well-kept, and provides good value for the price. A reliable option for a stay in Dunedin.

From Wednesday, 27 August, to Sunday, 31 August 2025, I took a College Choir to Dunedin from Wellington. The event was held at the Dunedin Town Hall.|The Hotel's location was fantastic, just a 1-minute walk to the Town Hall, but also far enough away to ensure a quiet stay.|From Pomare, the Reservations Manager, to Kimberly, the Night Manager, the staff were amazing and a credit to their hotel and company. Kimberly handled an incident with such calm and mature skill, a credit to her role and training.|Breakfast was fantastic for our group, with great service and a variety of options, and the rooms offered space and comfort that the students appreciated. They also enjoyed the full suite of SKY channels.|We were given access to the Edinburgh room for our stay, which gave us great flexibility for meetings, rehearsals, and shared meals.|Communication with the group was top-notch, and nothing was ever too much.|This hotel offers a great stay for large groups like ours.|Well done, Dunedin Kingsgate.

Kingsgate Hotel Dunedin is in a great central location—just a short walk to the Octagon, shops, and restaurants. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with everything you need for a pleasant stay. Staff were friendly and welcoming, making check-in and check-out smooth. While the hotel is a little dated in style, it’s well-maintained and offers good value for money. A solid choice for anyone visiting Dunedin.

Disappointing. We stayed there two months ago and thought it was good so we booked another night for this trip. The rooms are good and the bed is nice and soft. However, we didn't have any towels or bath mat in our room so I had to go to reception to get some. The breakfast that was provided the next morning was all disappointing. The hot food trays were empty and there were numerous people waiting for them to be topped up. We went for breakfast at 9:00am and there were still people coming in for breakfast well after that. The only hot food available was baked beans, scrambled eggs (which were overcooked) , some hash browns and sausages. There was no bacon provided this time or none was provided while we were there and we stayed for a good 30 minutes (mostly waiting for the food trays to be re-filled but they weren't). Other people just good fed up and left and you could tell they weren't happy. I'm sure the standards could not have dropped that much in the space of two months, maybe it was an abnormality but I don't think we will stay there again. Once you consider that you have to pay $15 to park there also, it loses the value for money proposition.

Travelling as a family of four, we were very happy with our room and the provided Wi-Fi. Master 11 finally got his chance to decide what to watch, as there was a family movie channel available (though there may have been others—we didn’t check).||The water was always hot, and we appreciated the sachets of tea and coffee. Some hot chocolate sachets would have been a welcome addition. A complimentary carton of milk was provided each day.||The beds and pillows were very comfortable, although the comfort was slightly offset by the noise coming through the walls from neighbouring rooms. On the first night, there was some noise, but it settled early. The second night was more disruptive, with a child in the next room shouting out sporadically until nearly 10pm. Thankfully, the third night was blissfully quiet—just the gentle murmur of voices at most.||Staff were welcoming and friendly throughout our stay. Breakfast was excellent, and the cooked portion in particular was perfection—thank you to the chef.||The hotel is within easy walking distance of evening eateries. We’ve stayed before and are likely to return. While we could hire a cottage in another town for a similar price, it wouldn’t include the bonus of breakfast—and we’d have to make our own beds and clean before leaving. That’s why we chose Kingsgate Dunedin for this holiday. Thank you, Team.
