During our arrival we were greeted with quite a musty smell entering the castle. I understand its old, but something should really be done to alleviate the smell. Receptionist showed us to our room through the meandering corridors. Room was warm on arrival and seemed clean but the more we spent in the room the more we noticed it was old and musty. No water left to allow us to have a cup of tea was foreshadowing for what was to come...||We dined in the Dungeon Bar. The smell again, was putrid. Old, mouldy and nearly of stale sweat. I couldnt stomach it nor could my wife. Food was mediocre, I had the steak, with crispy onions and one cherry tomato (they went all out) and chips, while my wife had the curry. Wings were ok, had to ask for the blue cheese as they forgot, the couple next to us had to ask for forks and knives. Young serving staff, we wont hold it against them. ||When we returned to our room, there was no water. No hot water, no cold water, not even water to flush the toilets. Couldn't even wash our hands. Informed reception at 8pm. They were apologetic and noted it would be fixed in half an hour. It was not fixed, even at departure the following day. Walls were paper thin, could hear every footstep within a 20mtr radius, including our bed shaking as someone passed in the hall outside our room in the Abbey section. Next door neighbour wasnt happy about the shower not working also, heard him screaming about it for 45 minutes. Heating turned off at night and although the tog of the sheets was acceptable, the room was like an ice box overnight with no way to control same within the room.||Receptionist was apologetic when checking out but wasnt long about flinging the terminal at me to pay full price. When I explained that the water was off in our room she as much as laughed in my face and said it was back working now. It was not working in our room in the abbey section of the hotel when we walked out of same 5 minutes previous.||'Come back another time and it will be fine' she stated. ||We will never be returning. Extenuating circumstance or not, the place is not fit for purpose.
