This was hands down my favorite campground on the whole island. We were at the walk in site #18 and loved having a bit of seclusion. So many campgrounds on the island pack people in close to each other. If you choose a walk in site you will not see another person unless they walk on the trail path that connects your site to others. No noise other than nature. Walking on the lava cliffs was so beautiful. We slept so good. We took the road to Hāna here and then took the southern route back out. Keep in mind the southern route isn’t paved for most of it and it is more like a one lane road. Just drive slow and responsible and you’ll be fine. I wouldn’t drive towards the campground on this road though because you’d be on the cliff shore side which is sketchy if you need to pull off to let someone pass. But driving out from the campground is fine because you’d are on the mountain side.

You’re not going to get much sleep from the wind at the walk in sites, but 17 is a site I think would be hard to beat anywhere else. Easy to check in, spot for a hammock, picnic table, clean, no bugs, beautiful view of the cliffs, ocean, and sunrise. Pretty amazing.

One of the best experiences camping. If you prefer the cliff/walk-up site, it’s 17, 18, and 19 I think- double check website. However it will be very windy, tent shaking, etc. We camped at sites 1 and 2, closest to the pit-toilets. FYI- Exposed, no shade. No trees to tie up clears canopy- would need self-standing pop-up shelter for shade or tie rope between two cars.

We had reservations for two night but ended up only staying one due to the rain. Awesome location, great experience and well maintained area! We will be camping here again, more prepared next time ;D

I want to rate it 1 star. If you just read the first bit, this is for you: THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE AND EVIL! Stay away!!! If you are the kind of person to read another paragraph, here we go. I live on Maui. Maui is gorgeous, beautiful, breathtaking, etc. But if you can stay awake in a clear night at this campground, you will see the where the earth ends and the universe begins. If you have a habit of looking at the stars, then you are no stranger to seeing the Milky Way… This is different. On a clear night, this campground offers you a more stars across the whole sky then you have seen elsewhere trying to make out the milky way. It isn’t just breathtaking…if you are the kind of person to get excited about a star-filled sky, it is life-changing. There’s a reason the best astronomy labs are in Maui. You can see it for yourself, no telescope needed. Might get a bit cold, or it might stay muggy+warm all night. Once you see a clear sky at Kipahulu, it won’t matter, you will have chicken skin (goose bumps) regardless of the temp.

Incredible remote spot! We stayed in a camper van on spot 4..it’s a small spot but has shade in the afternoon. Highly recommend if you prefer peace and quiet as well as minimal services. Very remote campsite. There is no running water at the campsites, but they have bathrooms at the national park center close to the sites. Beautiful scenery and tons of lava rock on the ocean. This is NOT a beach campsite as it’s dangerously rocky and high waves.

overall, the experience was pretty disappointing. To be fair, it's one of the cheapest camping options on the island, and for that price, all you get is a picnic table and a grill. You’re allowed to park up to two cars per site, which is a small plus. The view isn’t terrible — it’s decent enough if you don’t have high expectations. But there’s no ocean access, so forget about swimming. There are also no showers, so don’t expect any real comfort. The bathroom deserves its own paragraph. During the day, it’s just dirty, but at night, it turns into a nightmare. Huge cockroaches crawl around — including on the toilet itself. You actually get scared that one of them might crawl up your butt while you're sitting there. It’s that bad. The cancellation and refund policies are a joke. They’re set up in a way that makes it nearly impossible to get your money back. I won’t be coming back. If someone just needs a place to crash for the night, I’d honestly recommend finding a wild beach and pitching a tent there instead of staying at this campground.

Yelp
Easily some of the cheapest camping you'll find on the island. Pit toilets were clean and there was 24 hour flush toilets nearby where you can refill your water. Lovely little park to wander around. Close to Hana too which has restaurants and beaches, although we brought food with us as well.

Yelp
(Reviewed on: 12/14/2022) The Team Members working at the Visitor Center is extremely friendly, and knowledgeable about the area. We would love to see more support and growth in the merchandise and other displays featured here. There is great opportunity to grow the Visitor Center and have small picnic, gathering areas right outside for visitors to enjoy the surrounding trails, waterfalls, hikes, views. The reason why this is only 4/5 stars, in order to reach the center, you must pay the $30 USD entrance fee (per vehicle). This fee will give you parking and direct access to multiple hikes (Pipiwai trail all the way up to Waimoku Falls). If you're visiting Maui and are enjoying the road to Hana and if this is the end goal, please try to get here early (10am latest) to start your hike, as there will be a lot of sunlight still and we estimate at least 2 hrs for moderate speed (this takes into account time to pause for pictures, relaxing, and random off trail adventuring). A must if you're visiting from the mainland.

Yelp
Stayed here for one night after an amazing hiking Experience through the bamboo forest to 3 waterfalls. If you want to spend more time at the waterfalls I highly recommend camping here to spend more time in this area. Very primitive Campground with pit toilets and some picnic tables. No running water. Bring your own or refill at visitor center. I used the picnic table to cook my dinner as the sun was setting, a pack of stray cats and some dogs were trying to knock off my little pot of rice off the stove. Be careful as the stray animals don't look like they are taken care of. I ended up eating in the car. This area does not have any restaurants. It's best to bring your own food. I did and it was great. The visitor center is nice and there's flush toilets, running water and a drinking water refill station. Both the Hikes that others have described is definitely worth exploring. Because of the stray animals, I ended up sleeping in the car which was fine for me. I met a few dogs on the trail while I was hiking too, that had a collar but no owner. Couple of us hikers tried to help them. Later realized they just roam around there.

Yelp
Campground in Haleakalā National Park. It is located in the Kipahulu area. 3 nights is the maximum. We got our permit from the entrance from the park ranger. Ours was free, we have a National Park pass. Not sure if everyone gets it for free. Campground over looks the ocean and it has two outhouses. No showers! That's unfortunate. Lots of campsites to choice from and they also have bbq fire pit to bbq at.

Yelp
Great campground! Located just under the pipiwai trail. Very quiet and clean, first arrived first served, you can tent or you can camp in your car/van. There are couples of bathrooms that has toilets only. They don't offer fresh water, wifi, electricity and showers. The beach is very close but has no acces from the camping. If you pay 25$ you get to camp in every state parks for 3days so this camping was free for me just by shower my ticket from the last day camping.

Yelp
Great Campground Backside Of Hana and Haleakala! Well maintained little campground with some little trails to walk around on. There is a good hike to go to the falls also and a little loop hike around the pools. Not much for ocean swimming potential as the waves were pretty violently smashing into the rocks when we were there. There are abundant picnic tables for meal making. Fires are only allowed in the little metal fire grills on a pole coming out of the ground. There are outdoor outhouse accommodations, no showers or real toilets. Water for bottles can be found at the water bottle station outside the visitor center. Feral cats can be found wandering around looking for easy camper foods too. Stop by and camp a couple nights!

Yelp
Great campground. Peaceful with a fantastic view. No beach access and they close down the pools a lot so I can be a bit much on hot days.
