One of my favorite places on Earth. Gateway to Big Sur primeval! Nice grass campsites. Unbelievable views up and down the coast. A nice path leading to the rock promontory festooned beach (but watch out for the ENDLESS poison oak). The only downside? The same one that every park service beach has in California; the park service! Kirk Creek was a first come, first serve camping area that you could almost always find a camp site at. Now, thanks to the park services online reservations, you better be on their website exactly six months before you want to vacation there because every site will be booked almost immediately. Since the fee to lock in the reservations are fairly inexpensive, people book the campsites, and likely about half never show up, forfeiting a small amount of money...and your chances at a guaranteed spot!

Google
Beautiful place to relax and spend the night! The raccoons will pay you a visit after sunset and if you take that trail down to the water you will get poison oak oil on your stuff. We both came home with poison oak rashes, which are daunting. Also the bathrooms could use a little attention if I'm being honest. Can't beat the views and drive to and from! Overall we loved our stay there, unforgettable really!

Google
Lovely trip! All of the campsites are beautiful! Our host, Michael and his wife were lovely! Loved their doggies too! They helped us with what to do around the area and when we decided last minute to stay longer they were so accommodating due to cancellations! I got a Jade class and Michael told us there was a beautiful trail on the campground which had amazing views! We got really lucky due to the campground being booked up! The sunset is so beautiful, I’m so glad we were able to experience camping here! There is no cell service, water, flushing toilets and there are raccoons but it’s all worth it!! I loved every second and can’t wait to be back! Again, please note that the campground is really booked up and only has one FCFS site so please plan ahead!

Google
Such a gem. Loved our stay here. I’d suggest getting a site that’s on the outside perimeter, and of course with a view if possible! Only comment is that we were close to the bathrooms which, unsurprisingly / expectedly, got a bit smelly at times. Asides from that, the vibe here is wonderful and the people running this place were absolutely terrific. So friendly and helpful. Fires are also permitted here, which meant we could have smores by the sea! Yay!

Google
BEAUTIFUL!!! Absoultely stunning campground and view. Watch for the raccoons. It is no joke, they come out in groups of 20-30 at a time and will surround your vehicle trying to get food, water bottles, or anything else laying out. Firewood is damp, purchase before driving in or you'll be smoldering all night.|Roads getting in and out are very curvy and speed limit is 25mph for miles! Takes some time but it definitely worth it.|Camp staff keep it spotless and makes sure that people do not abuse the # of cars per space. We had someone park in ours while we were hiking and our daughter let us know the camp attendant came by and asked us to move the car or pay for it. She let them know it was a stranger and they were friendly and left. They did come back later to make sure the car was gone and it was. Loved it!!!!|Definitely visit, it's worth it!

Google
Wonderful campground and well maintained. No running water but that’s okay. There are trails to explore at the campground which was a delight. Enjoyed going down to the beach and sitting on the rocks. My only complaint is that I don’t think the campground should be RV friendly. There was a HUGE RV blocking a lot of the view from my campsite because it was parked oceanfront — and that was a bit of a bummer. If RVs are allowed they should only be at the top, and not obstructing views below.

Google
Awesome location on the cliff overlooking the ocean. Great hiking trails up into the Ventana wilderness. Campsites are decent sized. Pit toilets, no water or electricity. Definitely roughing it, but it’s great. I’ve been trying to snag a reservation for years, finally got one. Loved every minute of it. Highway 1 is closed North of the campsite. Since I am coming from the North I took 101 to Nasciamento Ferguson road, which joins 1 very close to the campground. This is a narrow, steep, winding road with awesome views but not for the faint of heart. Great trail down to the beach but watch out for the poison oak. Be sure to fill up with gas before the final stretch. The closest gas station in Gorda is charging close to $9 per gallon.

Google
Fantastic small campground. Great views, Jesse keeps the place clean and bathrooms stocked. I stayed in site #28, it's one of the bigger spots. My 23 foot travel trailer and Tundra fit just right.

Yelp
Camped a lot of places in my 34 years of life.. but nothing compares to Kirk creek! The views... are you kidding me! They are so insane! You are literally sleeping and camping right next to the ocean! Stayed here 3 nights and fell asleep to the ocean waves! Just wow! A few heads up- no water, no showers, no sinks. Pack everything in, and stop leaving trash out! Also no bear lockers- this place is filled with savage raccoons that are everywhere and they will break into your stuff if it is not locked away in the car! A beautiful campground- located on the south part of Big Sur! A beach is 4 miles down the road!

Yelp
Kirk Creek Campground offers one of the most breathtaking coastal views you'll find anywhere in California. Waking up right on the cliffs above the ocean is incredible and truly makes the trip worth it. There's no cell service, though newer iPhones with satellite messaging can still send and receive texts if needed. Just be prepared: the campground is very rustic. There's no water, no power, and only basic latrines. At $45 per night, it feels a bit steep considering the lack of amenities, but that's the Recreation.gov rate- and the scenery does soften the sting. If you're driving in, know that Nacimiento-Fergusson Road is not recommended for large vehicles, trailers, or anything that struggles with braking downhill. For larger rigs, Highway 1 is definitely the safer and better option. The surrounding area is amazing, with tons of hikes, beaches, and spots to explore. You can even find local jade along the beaches and in riverbeds, which is a fun bonus. The campground hosts are enthusiastic, friendly, and genuinely helpful- one of the highlights of staying here. The only major downside is the raccoon situation. They go absolutely wild at night- climbing on tables, chairs, coolers, even cars and trailers. They will try to open anything they can, so make sure everything is secured or locked up. It would be great to see the park system address this, because they're definitely a persistent (and bold) nuisance. Overall, Kirk Creek is stunning, quiet, and unforgettable- as long as you're ready for a rustic experience and some energetic nighttime visitors.

Yelp
Kirk Creek is undeniably beautiful. The views are incredible, and you can walk to tons of great trails and beaches. But be prepared, it's extremely primitive and remote. There's no water, no electricity, no cell signal for at least 20 miles, and only latrines, so you need to pack in everything and if you forget anything or don't pack enough, good luck because the closest convenience store is 15 mins South on the 1 with price gouging that truly profits from supply and demand. No where to go North on the 1 as the highway has still not been rebuilt after the last landslide. For $45 a night, the value feels uneven. Some sites with full ocean views are absolutely "premium," but the inner sites are much smaller with limited views and really shouldn't cost the same. And honestly, any site downwind of the latrine should be discounted, the smell is brutal. Prior reviews about the host are no longer true, the newest hosts in Nov '25 are nothing but accommodating, knowledgeable, and social. They are happy to give great recs and sell firewood on site.

Yelp
We had campsite 17 It is massive! Great if you have a big party! We were able to set up our 6 man tent, our "kitchen" pop up, and our bathroom tent! They have cemented bathrooms No showers No water spickets Very clean campsite Our camping host was amazing. His name is Jesse. They do sell firewood at this campsite There's a little trail that takes you to the beach Our site particular had a GREAT VIEW the only downside like I said before was the uneven ground and we were right next to the camp host. But he was cool, so it wasn't bad

Yelp
Absolutely breathtaking views here. One of the most amazing campgrounds in California. It's difficult to get reservations, but absolutely worth trying to get them. And worthy of repeat visits. The campground is open year round. There's no running water, but the outhouses don't smell. There's firewood for sale here. Site 31 is also home to some raccoons, so be wary of your food, there are no food storage boxes here so make sure you put everything away into your car overnight. One was bold enough to even go into the hatchback and try to open the cooler! It wasn't scary, more entertaining than anything. There's a short trail in the campground as well. It's easy access to Sand Dollar Beach, Limekiln State Park, McWay Falls and Pfeiffer Beach (45 minute drive from Kirk Creek Campground). Makes for a nice weekend and a nice road trip in California up the coast. There can be road closures that prevent access to the more famous areas (like this time to McWay Falls and Pfeiffer Beach), so it's good to check before heading out to avoid disappointment. Anyways, an amazing campground, you won't regret it if you get a spot here.

Yelp
I've been dreaming of camping at Kirk Creek for about 4 years now after stumbling across a YouTube video that highlighted the epic views and serene atmosphere. Fast forward to a couple of months ago, I got lucky and snagged site 22 due to a cancellation. It's the last spot along the bluff and, from what I could tell, the only site with some shade thanks to a lone tree. You get a fire pit, grassy area, and a bench--all with an incredible, uninterrupted view of the ocean. I was a bit concerned after reading some reviews about raccoons wreaking havoc at night, but I didn't experience any wildlife drama (thankfully). Coming from SoCal, it felt similar to beach camping, but with a more rugged, isolated vibe. While Kirk Creek is breathtaking, if I return to Big Sur, I'm doing river camping at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park or Fernwood cause that never gets old. That said, if you can get a reservation at Kirk Creek, especially site 22, grab it!

Yelp
I don't know how many times I have read about Kirk Creek being one of the best campgrounds in CA. I had been wanting to go for years (yes back when it was first come first serve). Luckily this year I scored a last minute cancellation and was able to stay over fourth of July weekend. I must say as campgrounds go I wasn't that impressed. We had a campsite on the cliff (site 11) however, there wasn't much of a view unless you walk to the street by the bathrooms. The site was completely surrounded by poison oak and there was a family of racoons that would jump on the hood of the car and use the windshield as a slide at night. Now that I would have loved to see, sadly, we only saw the footprints in the morning. The racoons were also pretty bold and wouldnt even wait until we went to bed before they came to introduce themselves as we sat by the fire pit at night. There is also no shade whatsoever, so bring an easy up. The weather was lovely and hot. The beach from the campground was pretty rocky and full of poison oak so we opted to drive up and down the coast to other beaches during the day. Overall, I think I had built this place up in my head based on all those campsite top lists so it was a bit of a let down. As always, had a really good time being out in nature. P.S if you take Ferguson Road over be sure to check your coolant, engine and brakes before. It is pretty narrow and windy over multiple mountains.

Yelp
I just stayed here for 2 nights with wifey and our lil schnoodle. We got really lucky and scored one of their best spots at the last minute! You'd be hard pressed to name a better coastal camping experience on the West Coast. The key is preparing before your arrival as there's little to no grocery stores nearby. Theres a trail that takes you to the ocean, there's another trail a short distance from the campsite that overlooks the campsite and Highway 1. The scenery is breathtaking! Just be careful as there's a ton of Poison Oak everywhere! There's many cool things to see during the day. My favorites were driving to Salmon Creek Falls. Be careful as you hike for that perfect view, the rocks are wet and slippery. Close the campsite is Mill Creek. The beach there is lovely/ we didn't make it to the trail but maybe next time. The ocean is very loud here so bring your earplugs at night! Beware, this place does have raccoons that will walk up to your campsite while you're making s'mores so be warned not to leave out trash or food, they will snatch yo sheeit! They even creep near the tent at night, I think our schnoodle wanted to pounce and protect our campsite. The hosts were really kind and happy to give info for nearby spots to visit. This whole experience was very emotional for me with now 3 parts of Big Sur closed. The southern most closure is 2 miles from this campsite. With the constant landslides and freeways breaking I worry how much longer Mother Nature will allow us to see this part of the coast. Important- with all this tall wet grass in the area, there are ticks, so use caution for yourself and your dog, a big one was crawling on our tent but I flicked him into oblivion with ease. Lastly, know in advance that there's no running water, Bring your own in advance. Bring your wet wipes to avoid being stank AF.

Yelp
One heck a drive from San Francisco but 100% well worth it. We were in campground #24 and the views were still amazing. Good luck obtaining a reserve! They seem to be booked months I'm advance, we single got Lucky.

Yelp
Beautiful campsite! Highly recommend staying here, Michael ( Camp Ranger ) was very friendly and informative - had plenty of nearby recommendations. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
It'll take a stroke of luck to get a site at this campground. You'll either have to plant yourself in front of the computer at 6:59am six months prior to your desired date while frantically pushing the *book now* button, or you'll time it just right and swoop on a cancellation. Either way, totally worth it! This campground is often listed as one of the top campgrounds in California. It doesn't get better in terms of location: situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Million dollar views at $35 a night. Our site (21) had a fire pit, grill and lots of space! We shared with a few resident bunnies who weren't intimidated by us at all. One night, the two of us saw a shadow float down from a tree and immediately turned on our flashlights to investigate. It wan owl trying to catch a gopher! What an experience! No cell service. No water. Pit toilets only. All of that didn't dissuade me, and many others, evidently. Put this on your bucket list.

Hannah L.

Yelp
Great campground. Located right on the California coast, this campground is probably one of the prettiest in the state. Camping here means you are basically cut off from the rest of the world: no wifi, no cell signal, just you and the waves. Each campground has the basic amenities, fire pit, table, parking space but no running water in the normal non-trailer sites. Bathrooms were decently clean. It is quite cold here so bring a jacket. I did have an intense allergic reaction to some kind of plant or pollen in the air here that made us have to leave early so just be careful if you tend to get allergies and bring benadryl.

Earl R.

Yelp
Nice camp ground, but you don't see the big trees that I hoped to see. Dry camping. A little run down. The road north was closed down in September 2024 three miles north of this camp ground. Didn't see or hear the raccoons that other reviews talk about. Also when we went the fog didn't burn off much. We may have had 1 or 2 hours of sunshine every day. By camp site 12 there is a trail down to the water that has been cleaned up and cleared. Easy to hike!

Yelp
Breathtaking views of the crashing Pacific Ocean waves and the sun setting down on an April Tuesday (4/23/19). There is no phone service here. Glory to all the gods in all religions. If you really have to have your WI-FI, the nice host on duty told us that the Lucia Lodge charges $3 for an hour. It's a short drive further north. Nature is your religion here at Kirk Creek Campground. The stars at night! Only downside is the noise from cars on Highway 1 on until about 10PM, but not many during my slumber spell. Three raccoons snuck up on my husband and me while we were finishing our bottle of wine and letting the campfire die. Scared the curse words right out of my mouth. For me, they're at a cross between "stealthy little creeps" and "cute lil' scavenger gangsters." They scattered as soon as we jumped up, and came back like 15 minutes later. They didn't find anything at our campground, but the next morning we saw pawprints on our upopened cooler. (It had only cream sodas in it. Lol.) I hope you get a site that is oceanside. (They are reservable online, but those go fast - not sure about the others.) That way you can walk along the paths to view whales passing by. Sites are fairly close to one another, but not too bad and there is quite a bit of shrubs between the sites along the cliff. Firewood is $12 (yikes) and starter is $5, CASH ONLY at the host's site. Primitive camping. Pit toilets. Dogs allowed. I'm a fan.

Yelp
I don't know if I can recommend this yet or not but my plans are to get there soon. I know that I know a few people that's been there and they've had no complaints. They say it's gorgeous and clean

Yelp
This is the best campsite on Highway 1 - must stay here at least once in your life! Make sure you watch for open reservations

Yelp
I was aiming for Julia Pfeiffer but the sun was setting on me so I stopped here on a Thursday night with no reservations. I was only staying for one night, so I was lucky to find a free site. I stayed in #30, which is closest to the highway (furthest from the beach) but has great views because of a slight elevation and you can still hear the sound of the waves in the distance. You are pretty close to your neighbors, but everyone was quiet and respectful. Many people had dogs on leashes and there were families with children. Every one was well behaved friendly. Sites are $35/night. I saw the camp hosts but didn't interact with them much. There are pit toilets with ample toilet paper (I was there on a Wednesday night, weekends might be different). Each site has a fire/BBQ pit, a picnic table, and space for one car. Since there were signs warning us about raccoons, I kept all of my food in my car. I took a walk towards the more secluded walk-in sites and all of those had lockable food containers, which is nice. I stayed in mid-March and loved all the white calalily's blooming within the campground. There is poison oak everywhere, but just be mindful of where you walk and wear long pants and tops. I saw MANY rabbits near my site, #30 borders lots of trees and shrubs for bunnies to hide in, but they didn't really bother me. It was a bit difficult for me to find a truly flat space for my tent in #30, but I did ok. I did the hike down to the rocky beach. The hike itself was lovely, you cross Kirk Creek on a small "footbridge," but the beach was just rocks that morning, so I didn't stay on the beach very long. It was nice to listen to the sound of the creek meeting the ocean, but it was difficult to spend much time there, balancing on the tips of rocks. When I visit again, I would explore the inland Kirk Creek trail that starts just across the hwy from the campground. In the end I am really glad that I didn't drive on to Julia Pfeiffer. When I drove past it on my way home, the park was closed! Apparently they had some severe storm damage this spring and are closed until further notice (3/19).

Yelp
Very small campground, camp host is not friendly, only gave it 2 stars instead of 1 due to location, nothing special.

Yelp
We have been to this campsite many times and love it. This time around the camp host Darra was so friendly and accommodating. She really made our camping trip memorable.

Yelp
GORGEOUS! Most campsites with amazing views. NO water! Bathrooms aren't very clean. Beware of poison oak. 30 minutes to cell signal. 15 minutes to country store. Rocky shore is reached by 8 minute walk down easy trail. I stayed in site 12. Beautiful elevated views Large site. Zero privacy, but I would stay in that site again.

Yelp
The views were unparalleled. The problem we had was the group of girls camping next to us. We were in a trailer and had just gone to bed around 10:00. Then the explosions started. Initially, we thought they were lighting fireworks. They were actually hitting our trailer! We flew out of trailer to their site where we found one girl asking us "not to yell at her because she was in a fragile state". She admitted that they left a huge box of whip-its too close to the campfire and now she had a box of explosives. We would have gone to the campsite host BUT we were told earlier that day they were "off duty" and to not go over to their trailer. Not only could our trailer and others' tents been set on fire, but they literally could have killed someone. The next morning we collected whip-it canisters all over our campsite and on top of our trailer. Was the site beautiful? Yes, but without someone enforcing campsite rules and safety, we won't be back.
google avatar

Marouane S.

Yelp
This is one of the most beautiful campgrounds I have ever visited. The site is literally by the Highway 1 so if your tent is close enough you might hear cars run by. The views are unbeatable and the trail to the beach is one of the most beautiful experience I had in a while. Hosts are super nice and very helpful. Make sure you come prepared with water as there is none onsite, firewood's if you don't want to get them onsite (They cost $15) and remember that there is no internet there! Closest place where you get wifi is Lucie (About 4mi north) for $5. Other than that it's such an amazing experience to be here and there are also a lot of fun hikes around the Los Padres Forest. I will come again for sure !

Yelp
One of the BEST times we've had camping!! We will be back!!! This campsite has the views of the coast and gorgeous sunsets. Check-in was super easy, just drive around until you find your campsite # with your last name. We stayed at site #32. It sits up a little higher so you don't have too many campsites in your view. We walked around and scouted where we'd like to stay next time. #9 takes the cake, perfect views of the coast line, you're right by the hiking trail and right on the edge of the water. Parents! Be warned, this entire campsite is riddled with poison oak. Be very, very, careful. We took the hiking trail down and was incredibly disappointed, because we had read online that this campsite has the only private stretch of sandy beaches. All we found were rocks. The hiking trail is in major need of trimming back the ivy, plants and poison oak. Wear long sleeves and long pants. However, this didn't deter us, we'll be back for #9. They have wood for sale, just note if you're getting there late they close the gate for the wood at 6pm (per the sign).

Yelp
After getting back from Big Sur this past weekend, I couldn't stop raving to all my friends about the amazing views from our campground. Most of the sites were very visually secluded -- lots of bushes/plants between you and your neighbors, giving your party a very intimate space to camp. We picked site #32, and we had a great panoramic view of the ocean and much of the campground. I was concerned after reading reviews about the steepness of the ground onsite, but the ground was actually pretty flat. We were also right next to the restrooms, which was perfect (there were no odor problems either). There was zero cell service here, but it actually made a pleasant weekend to "disconnect to reconnect". It would probably have helped to do a little more research beforehand, but we asked Bob (the campsite host) and he had plenty of advice for where to go during the day. At night, the raccoons came... Don't leave your food without locking it up in your car! We left a bag of marshmallows on the picnic table, went to the fire for about 20 minutes, and came back to the table... Didn't even notice it was gone until we heard something rustling in the bushes. Frantically turned the flashlight on the bush and caught a raccoon on top of the marshmallow bag, looking at us haughtily with its beady little eyes! NOTE: Bring your own water!! They have NO water onsite. Overestimate to be on the safe side. RESERVATION TIP: Campsites fill up quick. Book your site 6 months in advance, and this means 6 months TO THE EXACT DAY. Set an alarm on your phone for 12am if you have to. Although the campsites are all pretty great, some of them are definitely better than the others. Scour the rest of these reviews, and look at the facility map on the recreation.gov website for what sites are good (hint: pick one close to the water!). NOTABLE NEARBY ATTRACTIONS: - Beach under campground: walk to the north side of the campground and there will be a sketchy trail going down to a secluded beach area. A great place to watch the sunset since it's so close to the campsite. Hike at your own risk! - Sand Dollar Beach (5mi south, 5-minute drive) - Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (17mi north, 20-minute drive) - Limekiln (2mi north, 3-minute drive) - Pfeiffer Beach (30mi north, 45-minute drive) -- worth the drive!! I've already set a reminder in my calendar for the end of the year to remind me to book again for next summer. That's how great this campground is!

Mac T.

Yelp
Absolutely epic stay!! Enjoyed surrounding trails (posion oak is no joke, be warned) and hit Sand Dollar beach just down the road. Thanks for the hospitality!!

Yelp
Beautiful and central to a lot of fun activities! We took our 22' travel trailer, the drive On the 1 going North was brutal I suggest going the 101 up North further and driving south on the 1. Other than that this place was Amazing! Beautiful views from the camp site and a great short hike down to a rocky but nice beach. We also traveled North to Phifer Big Sur state park with Redwoods and then South to Salmon Creek which had really cool waterfalls and pools. The Camp hosts we met (Shelly and and Cory) were really nice and sociable with everyone. Our kids loved all the grassy areas to play on and we felt safe with them running around the grounds. .Everything was clean. We had a great time and will be back as soon as we can get another site.

Chloe D.

Yelp
Dara and her family made our experience at Kirk creek so amazing. She set my friends and I up with the best site I've ever seen and checked on us several times to make sure we had everything we needed. Hopefully Dara is there next time I go back!!

Yelp
Update (Feb 2020): We've spent 3 wks trying to book a cliffside site for August. Even with both of us selecting different sites & clicking the book button RIGHT when the clock struck we've failed. Finally gave in & booked 18. Seems to depend on speed of internet & how close your computer is to their primary server. So IF you're able to nab one of the cliffside spots during summer season then you've REALLY scored & should be proud :)

Yelp
D&D were the BEST campground hosts! First of all, the location js beautiful and it is super well maintained. The hosts They were able to accomodate us during a busy weekend and gave us a great spot. They made sure we were comfortable. There's no cell reception so be aware of that. Closest spot is 20 mins south. Overall 10/10 would recommend visiting!

Tyler A.

Yelp
Amazing views and true dark sky at night. Site 31 didn't really have a great spot for a tent but I still slept ok, may have been an issue if I was looking for more than just 1 person.

Yelp
Kirk Creek Campground surpassed every expectation that we had! My boyfriend and I came camping here for 3 nights over New Years and had an absolutely incredible and magical experience. Shooting stars and gorgeous sunsets, you really feel like you're escaping from city life when you come to Kirk Creek. The camp hosts were friendly and super helpful when it came to finding hikes throughout the area. We camped at Site 18, and had a terrific view of the ocean and mountains. This is a dirty campsite - you're literally camping in the dirt - so be prepared to get messy and have mud under your fingernails for the next week. I wished we had bought a water filtration system so that we could have used the fresh spring water that runs near the grounds. Keep in mind that this site does not have running water, and no flush toilets. Other than the smell, they were totally fine and neatly kept. It's also a great idea to screen shot maps of the distances between the campsite and hikes that you want to do since there is no cell phone service at all in this area. 10/10 I would instantly want to come back here with friends and camp.

Yelp
AMAZING LOCATION. We booked week of (I think we got really lucky) and stayed at site 22, at the end of the lot, with ocean views. The spot is shaded with direct views of the ocean. Flexible with # of people and cars, responsive to emails to help us with planning. Somewhat expensive (it's Big Sur - what do you expect). And firewood costs $15 for a small bundle.... But the campsite is clean. Dog friendly! The hosts are friendly. Bathrooms available, clean. There are raccoons all over the campsite. We didn't see any but we did see claw marks on my car door handle the next morning. I'd take raccoons over bears though! A little south of "Big Sur" but overall great location. Don't skip over the short walk to the beach between sites 9 and 11 and if you have time definitely cross the street to hike Vicente flat trail (you can hike as far as you want, the views just get better and better). Pro Tip: If you don't want to pay for extra cars or want to get there before check-in and hike, you can park on the street directly across from the campsite.

Yelp

Yelp
Good view and clean. Nice size. Well maintained. This campground is along highway one and the pacific ocean. Close to the beach. It's nice view and quiet. The rest room is clean, and always paper there. It even has light at night. There are trash cans. No bear box. just need to put your food inside your vehicle. It seems that no beas live nearby. Also there are hikers/bikers campsites. I saw some bikers camping there. I want to do that.

Yelp
This site would get 5 stars for on exception. Start with the good. Many sites are near the cliff with amazing ocean views. Bring binoculars, you can see killer wales jumping and shooting water through their blowhole even without binoculars. I was there late August and although many sites were reserved people didn't show up. There is a rule that allows you to show up at one of these sites but you have to leave if whoever reserved it shows. I'd say that if you find an empty spot after dark it's unlikely the person who paid will show. Camp host didn't even ask for my ID when I pulled up but showed it anyway so I wouldn't be bothered. I was at site number 21. Ground was uncharacteristicly hard, I think a large fire was recently lit. I'd suggest bringing an air mattress or additional cushions for a better sleep. My site had a grill and fire pit. There was a path to the "beach" but really it was a bunch of boulders along the shore. I was expecting a sandy beach to lay on so this was disappointing. However along this path there was a great small waterfall which was ideal for bathing. No showers but the outhouses were clean and didn't smell. Ragged Point is not far plus another campground north so if you want a real bathroom or shower you might be able to head there about 20 mins away. But Kirk Creek is all about location location location. Now the bad, the raccoons are a problem here and should be mitigated. Make sure all your trash is in the trash can and your table is clean before dark. Droves of raccoons come out at dark. I had a bag of garbage they immediately went for. Scared them off but they kept coming. Family across the path had a raccoon in their car. When it gets dark probably best to stay in your tent or camper. I was able to scare them away, they didn't attack me or my tent. Campgrounds 10 and 11 are probably the most scenic and I think with less raccoons. Lots of friendlier wildlife: the squirrels will eat from your hand and the rabbits are super cool. I will definitely be back but they need to get some of the raccoons out of there, it would be nice not to have to hide as soon as it gets dark. UPDATE: A tick gave me Lyme Disease at this campground. Definitely wear long sleeves!! 2nd UPDATE: After 3 months of testing, I was finally told that I did NOT contract Lyme disease.

Yelp
This campground was amazing, I went June 10th for one night and it was my first time camping solo. I read a lot of reviews, honestly the no running water wasn't an issue for me, it's camping! The bathrooms were pretty clean and there wasn't an awful smell like some reviews said. The host is new and it was her 3rd day there and she was amazing, super sweet and social and just very helpful. I was able to secure a first come first served campground (2B) and it was absolutely perfect. I got there by 11 am and there were plenty of hikers sites and 2 first come first served. I almost even scored site 8 but a guy beat me to it. It was quiet and nice and people in general were super friendly. The views were breathtaking and the temperature was perfect, hot during the day and it cooled at night. The breeze slows down for sunset which by the way is one of the most amazing sunsets I've ever seen. There is really not a bad site on that campground but the best views are obviously the closest to the water. Lots of poison oak but if you're careful you will be ok, I was able to manage . The hike to the beach is short and beautiful once you get down there. There quite a few hikes to do in that area. Sand Dollar Beach is super close and it's a beautiful beach where you can lay out in the sun and surf. Make sure your tank is at least half full when you get there, there is only one convenient store and a tiny gas station where gas was $7 a gallon. The site was $35 a night and the hiker sites are $5 per person and if there are hiker sites available you can pull over, drop off your stuff and go and park on the street. I personally loved it and will definitely will be visiting that campground at least once a month.

Yelp
Been here two times and besides the restroom situation, this place has been amazing. The view is phenomenal and absolutely gorgeous. There's a little trail on the campground that connects to the ocean, easy peasy stroll. Love it here! P.S: Saw three raccoons running on our beaches while I was chilling at night.

Yelp
The campsite location: Five stars The camp hosts: Two stars The camp amenities: 2 Stars Camp hosts were not at all helpful to us when we showed up with no water and learned that the site has NO WATER at all. Well we offered to buy a gallon for $5.00. Then at 6am the camp hosts turned on a massive generator that was right next to our campsite (#4) and many others, and left it running until about 8:30am. Not cool. I would be very careful to camp near hosts and their generator, or bring ear plugs.

Yelp
Although Plaskett is more my type of campground, love the woods...this small (only 31sites) is definitely nice. Almost all the sites have ocean views just where you're sitting. Off Highway 1, this is a must if you like to camp. We had 3 nights at this campsite and really enjoyed the quiet, serene and beautiful ocean views! We were here in June 2017, while the Highway 1 closure is still being fixed. Hard to get to Kirk Creek Campground since there is only one road to get in and out from, but the drive is worth it. I'll be back again, this time I know which sites to ask for too... The Real Foodie gone camping!

Yelp
Wow! The campground has the most breathtaking views. Our group booked multiple sites - 8, 20, 21, and 23. 23 is the best site - it has a tree that hangs over the picnic table so you can hang lanterns. On the other side, we were able to hang two hammocks. Each site seems well maintained and flat enough for our tents. Sites are $35 each night and allow one car. The other car is $10 extra. They have vault toilets on site, which is nicer than other campsites (although Limekiln had water spouts and showers). Unfortunately, due to the fires in the past, there are no wood fires. One of the girls brought a propane fire pit. We cooked our food on propane stoves also. The sites are close together, but the people there were great. At 3am, our neighbor from Salt Lake City, Ryan, was chasing the raccoons out of the bushes. The raccoons got into food left out. We were forewarned and stuck our food in the car. Camp hosts were great, rolling around in their golf cart.

Yelp
Stayed here last week, campsite 24 great views. Clean site. Be aware of raccoons, they get very close to people and will get to anything left out. There is a trail that leads to the beach, along the trail there is also mini waterfalls. Campground has no water and has porta potty style restrooms, all which is mentioned before making reservations. Only giving it 4 stars because of the smell of the bathrooms which I could smell from my site. Great stay overall.

Yelp
Site #15. Gotta bring in your own ice cold beer. Great views a lot of poison oak, I walked through all of it, no problems, so many people walk through I don't think it's a problem. No water, rocky beach, lotsa raccoons. Great place.

Yelp
I planned to drive up the coast from LA to the Bay Area. I hoped that a campsite would become available. After checking reservations online on a consistent basis only days prior to my trip, I came across an available site right on the bluff for the night I needed. Yay! I arrived just before sunset. Couldn't ask for a more peaceful view while I ate my dinner. The Campground was very serene and no noise. Not a raccoon in sight, either. In the morning, bunnies peacefully hopped around the site eating grass. The poison oak was trimmed back enough that I didn't feel it was a concern. Once the coastal mist broke, the view was spectacular! Take the short walk down to the beach. It's lovely.

Yelp
I love this place! I had grabbed one of those free magazines from the hotel we were staying at in Santa Cruz. Three friends and I were on the road with really no destination but a nice camping spot in mind along the coastal highway. I picked this one because it was near the ocean, had parking for a car and had excellent views. It's quite a ways from the Bay area but well worth the drive if you're lucky to score a spot. You can reserve some spots ahead of time but there are a few spots that are first come first serve. We got lucky when we arrived there was an available site right near the bluff with nice views of the ocean. Great hiking spots nearby and I even got a run in along the highway early in the morning. There are lots of raccoons so make sure you lock up your food tightly and bring water because there is no water here... or showers!

Yelp
We just spent an amazing weekend at this campground. The hosts were very friendly and helpful and the sites were beautiful and facilities were well-maintained. We are definitely coming back! Some quick tips and info for our favorite sites: 1. As many have said, #8 and #9 are the prime sites, but between the two #9 is better IMO as it has a small tree for some shade vs. #8 which is completely exposed. 2. #22 has a big, sturdy tree for hanging hammocks. It's right on the edge of the cliff as well for privacy and close (but not smelling distance) to the trash cans and bathrooms. It's mostly dirt though vs. grass, so if you're fussy about mud or dust, get one of the grassier sites. This is probably my third favorite site there. 3. #19 (our site) had a private overlook from which we watched dolphins playing in the surf down below. The trash bins were also just across the road so it was very convenient. It was a great site all around, as are sites #15 and #17. Bring a sun shade for these sites as they are fully exposed. 4. #11 and #13 are a bit smaller so if you have giant 6-person+ tents it will be a tight squeeze. I did see one group pitch three smaller 2-person tents side by side and they made it work. 5. #25, #26, #28, or basically all the ones closest to the highway, don't have a lot of space to pitch a tent, so they are best for RV campers. 6. The pit toilets were very clean and well-maintained during our stay (kudos to the camp hosts!). No smell whatsoever, unless you count the air freshener they spray every couple of hours. There are no lights in the stalls so bring a headlamp at night. 7. Firewood is available onsite for $12 for a bundle of about 8 logs, and water is $5 a gallon (so bring your own water!) 8. Take the warnings about the raccoons seriously! They have no fear and WILL run right up to your table and snag a pack of Oreos if your back is turned... even if you are just two feet away. The other residents (birds, ground squirrels, bunnies) are much more polite. 9. Yes poison oak is abundant here but very well maintained so as long as you don't run into a bush on purpose, you'll be fine. 10. Staying at Kirk Creek DOES NOT, I repeat, DOES NOT give free access to park at the Sand Dollar day use area, the $10 parking fee still applies. I don't know when that rule was changed, but the staff at Sand Dollar beach seemed exasperated at the misinformation as we weren't the only group who thought we could park for free since we were staying at a nearby campground. Just park on the highway next to the beach entrance and save the $10.

Yelp
How much does it cost to wake up to an ocean view? Watch the sunrise from your tent? $25 dollars a night! If you ask me that is a steal. The campsite is a little bit south of Big Sur and right off the 1. There might not be running water, or flush toilets, but each site is beautiful with plenty of room to lay out multiple tents. The site allows 2 cars to park for free, but you can pay $10 dollars more for an additional car. If you don't mind a little bit of walking, you can park your car out on the road. Unfortunately when we went when one of the biggest fires in California's history, but we were not affected by the smoke. The only downside was that many of the nearby trails were closed down. Luckily there was a beautiful hike a few miles north at the Lime Kiln State Park and sand dollar beach 10 miles south. Kirk Creek is definitely the top camp site on my list and I highly recommend it!

Yelp
Booked two campsites and last minute realized one of my party was not going to make it in time for the first night. I was told I had to give up the site entirely and that a rep would contact me at a later date to go over refund options. There is no cell service to confirm this with anyone so I relented. Within an hour the other site I paid for was rented out to another person for the same duration I paid for. No one ever contacted me after I got home. I put in multiple requests with recreation.gov for refunds, all of which were denied by the apparent manager of this facility, CampOne Parks Management Company. There is no phone number that will connect you to a human there, and my email to them was responded to with a generic auto-reply. I even had recreation.gov customer care scratching their heads at it. They opened up a case and reached out to CampOne, who told them that they contacted me about the issue. This is an outright lie and I still have yet to get answers from anyone at CampOne OR recreation.gov as to why I'm not entitled to at least a partial refund. Two stars for the beautiful views, wildlife and convenient location if you plan to do a lot of exploring by car to other parts of Big Sur. Aside from that I am on the fence about recommending Kirk Creek Campground. There are a select few sites with a little privacy, but it is really hard to tell which ones until you are actually there in person. They post pictures on Facebook but don't actually give much useful information. The beach is beautiful at sunset, however it is small and rocky, and getting down to it and back up is a MAJOR pain: you are walking down a path that is literally the width of a small adult with walls of brush (including poison oak) on either side. We only went down the one time after seeing what a problem it would've been running into anyone on the trail, especially with our dog. If you enjoy having your camp host check on you once an hour you will enjoy camping here. For me it felt a little intrusive after a while. It was also disappointing to find that I had not been given accurate information from them (reservation and just about the area in general). I thought I did all my research beforehand - checking on fire bans, bringing my own water, etc. - but now I know to do some digging as to who actually manages the facility before making a reservation, and to not rely solely on recreation.gov or their reservation rules (even though that's who I reserved through so this seems like really bad business practice) since there seems to be a huge disconnect between them and the actual facility manager. CampOne has pretty terrible reviews online and I can see why. Guess I'll chalk it up to a lesson learned for next time.

Yelp
One of the best campgrounds in California and the Pacific Northwest according to Sunset Magazine. Yes, I'll agree with that accolade, it's pretty darn amazing here; with our surrounding neighbors in their airstreams and vanagans, the campground looked like a Sunset Magazine cover shoot. We came on a could not be more perfect November day, with no reservations, and were able to swoop up one of the walk in sites no problem. Like the camp host said "they all have fantastic views." Our site was perched higher so we had expansive views of the coastline. We plopped down on our sleeping pads outside of our tents, on the little hill that faced the ocean, with our pillows propped up against a rock, and watched the sky change colors as it set. It was the most gorgeously perfect California day, and nothing could have been better. Everything about our stay at KirkCreek Campground was amazing. .....Oh except we forgot to bring enough water so we had to drive quite a bit to a gas station and pay $4 for a gallon of water(eek!) because the campground has no running water, but never mind the little things. At night, when the stars filled the sky, I couldn't help feeling that the world overhead seemed bigger. Maybe it was the sky reflecting on the vastness of the ocean; it was grand and impressive. Sleeping while listening to ocean waves crash on the shore was pretty awesome too. I had to keep telling myself that the sound was real and that it didn't come from a soundtrack. Sunrise was magical as well. We set our alarm so we could be awake to watch the sun come up. We left our campsite, bundled up in blankets, and walked to the other side of the campground to watch the sun rise over the mountains behind us. There is a trail that leads down to the water, and we had the whole place to ourselves. People were still soundly sleeping in their tents. Camping at KirkCreek Campground should be on everybody's bucket list.
