We paid £165 per night to stay two nights at the inn. The situation is spectacular. We enjoyed the two evening meals we had in the pub and the bar staff were great. However the room was very basic definitely not 4 star or even 3. We were in the twin room. One of the beds had a nice view. There was no tv which we didn't mind, but the description of the room said we had a clock radio which we had to ask for. The decor was very dated with some areas, for instance the bathroom door unfinished. The welcome tray was skimpy and no better than a budget hotel with uht milk. We expected to hear noise from the pub but as other reviews mention the noise from the fan is constant. The breakfast was good. We wouldn't stay again at that price for such basic facilities.

We didn't go in to eat unfortunately so the review isn't about the food. We stopped here as we were on an outing and we needed to feed our baby & heat up a bottle as the place we originally wanted to go wasn't open. We stopped here hoping they could help & they were very accommodating and got us a jug of hot water 😊. We absolutely would have also stopped for food but they were very busy & fully booked. It was quite obvious why. The food looked amazing!! It was a lovely little pub style restaurant. Super cosy with superb views. It was a shame we couldn't get a table & we had planned to go back for a meal but unfortunately we ran out of time. However next time we are in the area we will 100% book to eat as it was a lovely place! I would recommend it even without eating there, and appeciate them helping us get our baby fed, especially as they were so busy!

Went for a last minute meal, the staff were super accommodating and friendly as we hadn’t booked (would recommend as it got busy). Food was incredible, really good portion size. Such a cosy pub atmosphere, will definitely be back!

Six of us came for food here, we had beef cheek, and veg, beef and ale pie, and chips, and there was a side of Cumberland chipolatas, and we finished with chocolate and baileys cheesecake, chocolate brownies, and apple and strawberry crumble and custard. Not one of us found anything to complain about, and we all had to stagger to the cars to leave as we were so full! Brilliants old pub, with a gorgeous beer garden outside with beautiful views over the river and surrounding hills. Will be back!

Lovely little pub with nice rooms and lovely food. Beer selection was good for me but if you don’t like real ale you’re a bit stuck. Service is good but not perfect, if there’s one thing to improve it’s this. It does get busy in the pub as well so you should book.

Popped in after a walk up Crummock water; fully intending to all along since I researched good local eateries to visit whilst staying in Buttermere. Lovely cosy pub, reassuringly busy lunch service going on whilst there with a tight amiable team ticking things over effortlessly. Had the steak and ale pie which was deelish.

My daughter took us for Sunday lunch and I was suitably impressed. When we arrived, we struggled to get parked, good sign, obviously a good venue if its this popular. Inside it was old & dark & full of character. Filled with the buzz of punters having a lovely time. Fortunately we had a table reserved. Our plates arrived and everyone was impressed. I had the beef cheek roast and it was delicious 😋 Then we retired to the gardens with a beer. What a stunning place to sit and enjoy a drink, soaking in those views. Fabulous evening 👍

Sadly disappointing on this occasion The Lamb and stuffing were very tasty. Unfortunately the whole meal was barely warm and we had to wait whilst another table were served their main course until we received our vegetables to accompany the lamb that had been served earlier.

Yelp
The Kirkstile is a gem, both as a pub and as an inn. The food is a really high standard--very fresh and often very creative, and local. The rooms are so nice, clean and comfortable--and quiet--I had several fantastic sleeping nights. There are so many fine walks from the doorstep there is truly no need to get in your car. The staff is incredibly nice. And honestly...I can't see how it is possible to top a summer evening sitting at a picnic table on their lawn with an ale in front of you watching the light on fell change. I could park myself there for a week!

Yelp
This is the best food I had in the Lake District! A large group (11) of us showed up just before closing time and the staff was very accommodating. Everyone was helpful and kind. I had the Steak and Ale pie and it was just delicious. The mashed potatoes were perfect and the vegetable medley was just what I needed after all the fried food I had been having on the trip. I tried my friend's lamb and it was to die for. The only complaint I heard was about the chutney for the vegan curry. Save room for dessert. The sticky toffee pudding was one of the best desserts I've ever had; I'll be thinking about it for a long time.

Yelp
Visited: October, 2015. We got a little lost trying to find this place, but, the views were breathtaking, so, who cares... This is a most charming English pub to visit. Cozy room with fireplace. Cheerful clients. Salads to start were good. The steak pie with chips, as well as sticky toffee pudding were both excellent. Finally, they feature a solid selection of local ales, and their European wine list is short but sweet. Most definitely, worth the drive to the Kirkstile. Recommend getting a little lost, too.

Yelp
Probably my favourite pub in Cumbria! Great food, great atmosphere! How a traditional country pub should be!
