"Founded in 1913, this famous botanical garden was the first in the world dedicated to its country’s own flora. The spectacular, 90-acre plant haven forms part of a nature reserve that borders Table Mountain National Park. Besides numerous gardens and forests—some of which you can traverse on high via the futuristic Boomslang (Tree Snake) walkway—Kirstenbosch has a greenhouse, a restaurant run by the popular Moyo group, and a nursery for green thumbs who want to take a piece of the garden home with them. Spend five minutes here and you'll realize why Kirstenbosch’s displays at the Chelsea Flower Show inLondonoften win gold."

14 Best Things to Do in Cape Town

"This is one of our favorite places in Cape Town: a beautiful, serene expanse on the slopes of Table Mountain, with more than 7,000 plant species, most of which are unique to this part of the world (keep an eye out for all kinds of proteas, birds of paradise, wild gardenia, and much more). Scattered throughout the 1,300 acres are various artwork and sculptures, and in summer the park hosts concerts and events against the stunning mountain backdrop." - Sarah Khan

Amazing place to spend the day! A must-visit if you’re in Cape Town. We went as a family, and everyone, including the kids (6 & 8 y.o.), had a great time. You can bring a picnic and relax under the trees or visit one of the local restaurants with delicious food, drinks, and friendly staff

Calm and serene with spectacular views. Surrounded by mountains, offering an array of indigenous plants. Colourful.. spectacular comes to mind when searching for words to describe the experience. Offers something for everyone. Excellent hiking trials, scenic views from the canopy walkway, artwork displayed at various points, a little art gallery (one of my favourite things) and so much more.

Visited the garden in July on a rainy day , however, the rain did not stop us from exploring the botanical garden to enjoy the beauty of the nature . The landscapes were filled with rare and exotic plants, vibrant blooms, and towering trees probably age hundred of years old. Each path was a quiet lesson in biodiversity, showing the incredible variety and resilience of nature. More than just a place to admire flowers and trees , the garden is also an educational spot for young generation and how we should preserve such a wonderful botanical garden. A must go place in Cape Town. Please don’t miss it. Hats off for the wonderful and dedicated team for taking care of such an amazing place.

Even in the winter, Kirstenbosch is a worthwhile stop while visiting Cape Town. The gardens are extensive and well organized with well signed pathways for easy walking. The dry house is a very neat component where desert species are housed to limit their exposure to rain. I thoroughly enjoyed our time here. I suspect a lack of funding as is so often the case with institutions like this has resulted in the somewhat tattered appearance. Missing or illegible signs, weed species in the plantings, and litter do detract from the experience. The park is still wonderful, but with more attention and maintenance (money), it would be glorious. There are connections to the network of trails on Table Mountain, including Skeleton Gorge trail, which we were briefly on, but equipped for. The park is accessible by the Blue route of the City Sightseeing bus. I highly recommend a visit. June 28, 2025 C & J

We only had 2 hours to give to the garden so we went straight for the tree canopy walkaway. The whole garden is stunning and very well handled. You could spend a whole day inside and enjoy a huge variety of plants and flowers. We didn't try the restaurant but we had a bite at the snack near the P1. It's not expensive but you got your money's worth which is not much....

Very impressive botanical gardens. Take a free tour with a volunteer guide - they are able to tell you things that you would never pick up from just walking the gardens on your own as plant signage could be improved. Cafe ok. Definitely worth a visit.

I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Cape Town for the first time. It’s a beautiful, spacious location with stunning gardens, a wide variety of plants and trees, and even scenic trekking routes to explore. The views are absolutely spectacular—truly one of the must-visit places in Cape Town.

A beautiful area for walking and having a picnic. There are fountains in certain spots where you can refill your water. Benches are placed all around, making it a very relaxing and peaceful environment.
