"Nicknamed the “Castle in the Sea,” this stone tower sits on a rock in the sheltered harbor of Castlebay—the largest town on the Isle of Barra. In fact, you need to take a small boat across the bay to visit Castle Kisimul, which serves as the seat of the chief of Clan MacNeil. The only significant medieval castle to survive in the Western Isles, it features a curtain wall enclosing a central courtyard, and stone spiral stairs that lead to a great hall where worthies once dined. When visiting, be sure to climb up to the tower house battlements for panoramic views of Castle Bay."
Sadly Historic Scotland refuses to repair or open or do anything for the welfare of the little castle in the bay. Very unfortunate for Barra and all who live on and visit the island.

This was my third trip to Barra and I really wanted to visit the castle. So once the weather cleared and we could actually see the castle we got the boat out. The boat runs every 30 mins and is free. I am not sure if the cost of the castle as my friend treated me. I would say that 30 mins is enough time to go round the whole castle as its so small but definitely worth the visit. The views of castlebay from the castle are lovely..
