tried all 3 sausages with horseradish, mustard, and bread! each sausage was ~10 euros. cash only. apple streusel was solid, tastes as expected. PSA: google led us to the back of the cafe, rather than the front outdoor seating. also cash only!

Be aware…Cash ONLY!! The waitress wasn’t so nice from beginning, and as I was finishing my cake and coffee, she abruptly told me she is going home and need me to pay right now. I told her I don’t have cash with me, then she asked me to go to the ATM nearby, which I don’t have any card on me or PayPal account either. I suggested to go back to where I live, which is 10 mins away, and she said she can’t wait this long cause she is going home right now. It was only in the afternoon…who would’ve expected that to happen? I ended up borrowing cash from another table of nice people. The “cash only” itself isn’t a huge problem, but it could’ve been handled better anyway…

This is in some outskirt area of Stephanplatz. What I like about this cafe is it offers an authentic melange and sachetorte. The vibe is authentic as well. They are cheaper compare to the tourist cafe in the center of Stephanplatz. They are only accepting cash which it makes more legit cafe house compare to the others. So if you're looking for a more authentic cafe experience, Kleine's Cafe is the best place for you.

I ordered a coffee Before Sunrise and I am still waiting, I hope to get it After Sunset at least. That's why it's a 3/5, don't know still what to expect. Also the view is amazing.

Worst pastry ever. Butter taste really bothers. Whipped cream is worst one I have ever had. It is not even cream. Really overpriced and overrated place. We saw this place in a movie Before sunrise and came here. It is really bad. Nothing special at all!

Google
Great cafe near the city center. The place is always crowded, even in earlier ours, so you might have to wait for a seat. We ordered viennese caffe but, it wasn’t as it should be, it lacked the whipped cream. The strudel on the other hand was good.

I ordered sachetorte and tee. Tee was okay and I liked it but cake was absolutely disaster. I didn't like its taste at all. The whipped cream taste like unsuccessful homemade and tasted like butter. Price was exceggarated (6.8 euro) as well. Just was here because of movie "Before Sunrise". Bad experience.

Google
Very rude waiter. Almost left without ordering due to the initial interaction with him,but decided to just order drinks as we'd already sat down. Didn't feel welcome as a tourist visiting with my family, which is a shame given the location. Noticed the rudeness did not just apply to us but others in the cafe as well. Coffee was good and interior was nice but definitely wouldn't return or recommend to others.

Yelp
Great coffee, great food, great service, great small cafe, can't stop saying anything but great things The place is cash only and seems to be run by only two people so expect some slow downs but it was a pretty chill place and the servers were patient and welcoming. Open face sandwiches were tasty and nicely prepared with individual small cuts for easy finger foods. Classic Viennese Desserts were made very delicious.

Yelp
ORIGIN: Although you would think the cafe was there far longer, Kleines Cafe (small cafe) opened in 1970. LOCATION: The cafe is in the Franziskanerplatz in the inner city, a perfect stop for those exploring Vienna. EXPERIENCE: I entered this cafe for a supper one late afternoon. As the name suggests, the cafe is small, making for a cozy feeling. I enjoyed a sliced ham sandwich (Schinkenbrot) which brought to mind how outside the U.S. even something as mundane as an open-faced sandwich is prepared and presented to make the best of the ingredients. A layer of ground horseradish was spread on the long slice of bread, and the attractively folded layers of ham were topped with freshly grated cheese. SERVICE: I experienced swift and efficient service during my visit. TIPS: The cafe only accepts cash.

Yelp
Came to Klein's a couple of mornings due to promontory & locals feel - even though there were lots of tourists liKe us. Very much a student / backpackers vibe ( in a good way ) We opted for their open face sandwich the first day & it was piled with cucumber, tomatoes and Camembert- very refreshing Second morning we had the cheese & potato omelette & it was the perfect size to prepare us for the feasting at all the Christmas markets Coffees were decent to boot & we were fans

Yelp
Today (Oct 30) I went to check out Kleines Cafe as it was down the street from my hotel. What I observed shocked me. I assume there was an unexpected influx of customers and there was one waiter serving 20 or so seated customers. The waiter (has brown facial hair, heavier set) was very stressed over the existing number of customers and new customers coming to find a seat. I and other customers heard him loudly curse frequently and said "Why the F*** are there so many people" "F***ing people get the F*** out" and "Shut the F*** Up". There was a family (a mother with her daughter and son visiting from El Salvador) and the daughter at one point turned to me and asked if that waiter just told her to "Sit the F*** down and Shut the F*** up". I saw an older husband/wife couple looking very uneasy and they were trying to pay their bill so they could get out of the cafe. I heard other customers comment how unacceptable this was. Another gentleman (tall, skinny) started to help and he was much more pleasant. The older woman who was cutting chocolate cakes in the back was also helping to serve plates to customers. I saw new customers approach the cafe, only to be told rudely to leave by this waiter, and I saw him lie to customers and say certain tables were reserved and then curse out loud when those people moved to another available spot. There is a right way to treat people. If you don't like waiting tables then quit and do something else. The fact that this type of behavior was condoned by the other cafe workers is unacceptable. People are coming to this cafe as paying customers. If you are at maximum capacity, then put a sign up or speak to people in a respectful way. And by God please don't drop F bombs out loud so that other customers can hear you. I have worked as a waitress and understand how stressful it can be- but it is expected that you treat people with a level of decency. I travel a lot and share recommendations with family and friends. I will not be including Kleines Cafe on my list and will recommend to everyone I know to not go to this cafe. How they treat people is atrocious and should not be tolerated.

Yelp
Nice terrace outside on a cozy square. Ideal for a little afternoon aperitivo. Brownish bar inside.

Yelp
I am so glad I found this place on Yelp prior to my arrival in Wien. YUMMMM-O! I was ready for this to be a smokey bar and everyone was so polite about their smoking. The men I sat at the bar with acknowledged that I was not smoking and that I was eating and asked if I minded if they smoked. It was very thoughtful. I made some amazing friends at the bar who often frequented the bar including another restaurant goer's little dog who would slowly peruse the area for scraps and those willing to give handouts. I had the ham and Camambert open faced sandwich for $3.90 euros. The cheese was buttery and lathered thickly onto dense and hearty bread. This was a huge meal and kept me going for the rest of the night. It was a simple combination of three ingredients but hit the spot and was just what my body needed after a long day of travel from Olomouc, Czech Republic to Wien. This was absolutely a successful find and I would recommend this stop for anyone. A bit off the beaten path and you won't find any tourists here :)

Yelp
If you live in Vienna one of the skills you need to acquire is the "how and when" to grab a spot at a table inside the Kleines Café. This is a true art .... as it's not called "Kleines Café" (Little Café) for no reason. I am not going to give out any tips on this skill at all, because I always want my table when I go there and I don't want too many people to learn the tricks of the trade as it applies to the venerable Kleines Café in Vienna! Now lets get to the atmosphere - cool, warm, charmant, feel-good, intimate are all perfect adjectives to describe this establishment.. I don't smoke ... but it's awesome they still allow smoking here so I can go with my cigarette-smoking buds and they can smoke if they choose to ... and this little nook smells just like an old Viennese Café should. (Hey this place is not a Starbucks ...) Newspapers - excellent collection. The selection reflects the intellectual base of their clientele (although I must bring down the IQ a bit when I'm present!) Food & drink - All the traditional libations of a Viennese café are here ... and I always eat the Schnittlauchbrot (Chives Bread). It's simply the best in Vienna. Don't just take my word on that .... ask anyone who knows Vienna well. In warmer weather you can sit outside which is fine because Kleines Cafe is on the picturesque Franziskanerplatz. But sitting inside in winter, that's the total best. Hey, good luck on getting a seat!!

Yelp
Come here to smoke, drink, have a small bite, and sit for as long as you want. Banter, read a book, gossip or snuggle on a date. It's all happening here at this long standing, small, local, dimly lit cafe/pub, but you should anticipate an interior that borders on grunge if you've never been.

Yelp
One thing I hate as a tourist is falling into all the tourist traps, but here it felt like I had done exactly the opposite. It seemed like a cool little hang out which the locals probably visit more than the tourists. As the name suggests it's a small cafe, very small in fact. It's spread across two levels with a small serving area. We found a seat but I think we were just lucky, it was busy the while time we were in there. Smoking is permitted inside and they serve a small selection of simple foods alongside coffees and beer. I also sampled the orange punch but I guess this is probably a festive treat because it's close to Christmas which isn't on the menu all year round, although I could be wrong. The interior was unassuming and unpretentious. We sat upstairs where both walls are lined with mirrors and you can see yourself disappearing into infinity in their reflections, dotted around in the ceilings are clusters of 4 light bulbs arranged in squares, I loved them. We ate some sausage and a sandwich which were both good but the real thing which made it great was the laid back atmosphere and general vibe of the place. Downstairs someone was playing lazy jazz on the saxophone, unobtrusively enough that you didn't always notice but the perfect soundtrack to a relaxed afternoon in Vienna.

Yelp
Our Stammlokal. Home away from home. Comfortable and familiar. But smokey and loud. The best Melange in the world and I don't normally drink coffee. The Spezialbrot is heavenly, and the Eiaufstrichbrot is spicy with horseradish. They take great care with their little meals and I love it here.

Yelp
TL;DR - Non touristy bar, nice location. Kleines Cafe is a little bit off the beaten track but reassuringly close to the centre of things in Vienna. It's a tiny little bar, but sits on a small square where they have outdoor seating - it's a lovely suntrap. We stopped off here a couple of times for refreshments during our break. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and attracts more locals than tourists. The name is accurate though - the interior is tiny. Why only three stars? Well, on our second visit we ordered four drinks but only ever got served two of them - and our server then argued with us that we hadn't tipped him enough.

Yelp
Recently in Vienna, my travel companion insisted on going to this cafe as he's a big (loser) fan of Before Sunrise. Not that liking Before Sunrise makes you a loser...the two facts are mutually exclusive. Anyways, I was fine with the plan and it ended up being a lot less touristy than I'd anticipated. Smoking inside in small quarters, so if that bothers you I'd suggest sitting outside or going elsewhere. The strudel was just okay, but this place still gets five stars for being really sweet and, most of all, because the coffee was so delicious I had to close my eyes when drinking it.

Yelp
And small it is! The room is probably the most charming thing about this place. It is super tiny, it kind of makes you think like you traveled into world of tiny people. It's a scene from a movie for sure. I'm colder days, you're never going to find a seat because it seats probably a dozen people. On warmer days there is seating outside and it's a really nice place to people watch. It's not the most difficult place to find... But it certainly isn't easy. And when you couple it with the fact that you have to walk down a few Windee roads to get there? It makes it even a more charming experience. Definitely a respite for the locals

Yelp
I mean, I don't see what the big deal is. In fact, I was not impressed enough to go back. Its a small cafe that is has a few tables one next to the other inside, but not in that cozy way. Yellow lights. Smokey (but not crazy amounts when I was there). Not beautiful in any way. Outside are also a few tables. That's better, but I would not say anything expectational. Price is fair, two teas and a tuna toast for about 10 Euros. Bathroom was fine. The tea tasted enough peppermint, but its the bread on the tuna (spread) open sandwich (what they call "toast" here) that made this a two vs a three. The tuna spread was awesome, really good, not too much mayo, and tasty. However, the brown flatish bread, which is supposed to be special made was not exceptional and to my dismay, the crust was so hard, it hurt to much to try and bit into it, and forget chewing. For the first time in my life, I had to eat around the crust. I was like a spoiled child and my friend made fun of me, and there went a third of my food. When food is not edible, then you really don't even deserve two stars. Even if it is under 4.50 Euros. Also, you definitely should not come with more than 2 friends. Even then, you are crowding yourself and probably sitting on the people next to you. No idea why they make such a big deal of this place... probably the cute name and that its been in some movie I've never even heard of...

Yelp
I love this place in summer when you can sit out on the cobbles in the beautiful Franziskanerplatz, facing the Franziskanerkirche and lapping up the sunshine. It really is one of my favourite places in Vienna. It's one of these traditional little Austrian cafés which the Austrians are so fond of - where people come for a big coffee and while away the time reading newspapers. I've actually only ever been here in summer and don't even know what the inside looks like (!) but I can recommend the different types of "brot" they have (dark, slightly toasted bread with a choice of toppings) for a light snack.

Michael M.

Yelp
I'd highly recommend Kleins cafe. The service is top notch as if they really appreciate you coming there. They make an amazing americano coffee and fresh juices. The food is very high quality, non greasy and presented beautifully. Despite being busy they to took our order and delivered our food in a reasonable amount of time. It seems like a family run place that has a mix of interesting regulars and tourists. It has a very old school mom and pop feel that you don't get with the larger and more famous cafes in Vienna (cafe central and cafe sperl). You can smoke inside which gives it a nice vibe inside. Don't worry though, they keep the doors open in the summer so it doesn't get too stuffy. There is also a small patio outside overlooking a small public square and statute. Come early in you want a spot! You gotta come to kleins cafe when you come to Vienna!

Yelp
I love the Kleines Café. It gives you a real sense of Vienna's arts community. A place where you imagine people gathering to speak about what's happening --- off the beaten path of the tourist. It's 100% local. As good as the place is the approach ---- down Vienna's tiny streets, traveled no doubt by Beethoven, and by Mozart before him. GO!

Yelp
Everything was wonderful: coffees, omelettes and the bread, too! Not good for people opposed to the smell of cigarettes.

Yelp
Very classic cafe located in Fransziskanerplatz square close to the city center. The melange is alright, I like the way the cafe looks from the outside and inside, outdoor seating during the summer is amazing.

Yelp
a very nice, old fashnied cafe in the middle of the old district of Vienna! you can sit inside this cosy and tiny ambience with your friend drink your coffe and read the newspaper just like the old viennese coffee housr culture lovers did 100 years ago. it captures at least one century of viennese coffee house culture in this tiny place full of character. I just loved this slow vibes. the waiter was nice and on the other tables you can see locals, interessted people and singles just sitting reading newspaper and smoking their cigarette. its not full of tourists and a little bit off the tourist roads, therefore somehow a hidden treasure in the szene :) ahhh and i almost forgot - they have one of my favorite foods there chives bread, and a very good version too!

Yelp
I have been waiting many months to visit here, as during the colder months they only have the inside places available, which is very small and smokey, which for me is not so good. However not the weather is great so they have the outside place, which for central Vienna is great. No cars going past and it is more or less peaceful outside, accept for the damn Czech people who seem to be unable to hear each other and therefore speak by yelling at each other. Not so nice..... But all in all I like it. My Personal points system out of 10, standard for Vienna is 5. Location: 9 Atmosphere: outside 10, inside 4 Decor: outside 10, inside 4 Size: outside 5, inside 1 Non Smoking Area: Outside YES and inside officially yes but it is still smoky in the non smoking part. Coffee temperature(*2): 5 Coffee taste: 7 Service(*1): 8 *1=(Standard in Vienna is 5 on my scale) this is based on that you get serviced fast but you have to work hard to pay at the end) *2=(Standard in Vienna is 5 on my scale) I always have a Caffè latte as my control coffee. My coffee partner always has a Mélange.

Yelp
Kleines Cafe is definitely not a tourist trap and provides a visitor with a traditional Viennese coffee experience! They aren't the friendliest but the place is cozy and has excellent coffee.

Yelp
A wonderful little Café of the type you only find in Vienna. It featured prominently in the movie "Before Sunrise" with Ethan Hawke, and while this is not a reason to go there in itself, the place has been chosen for a reason. Lovely surroundings, excellent coffee and breakfast, fantastic atmosphere. One of my absolute favourites!

Yelp
Good spot for breakfast. Soft boiled eggs and bread with coffee. Ursula was patient and kind!

Yelp
The service was great, and the waiter even took the time to give us some pointers about the area. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and like the other reviewers I too felt like a local.

Yelp
Be warned. Its a small place and has no real non-smoking area. Full of smoke. That was it for us. Kids could not stand the smoke.

Yelp
the farmer's eggs were great, met some wonderful people who sat at my table, very international.

Yelp
This place does not feel like a tourist trap at all, in fact it is a lovely place to sit and have a cup of coffee. I had a hot chocolate and it was delicious ;) Would recommend this as a nice break for anyone visiting Vienna.
