On the Grid : Kleinmarkthalle

"In the market hall Kleinmarkthalle Frankfurters gather for a chat over a glass of wine, for a meal or a pleasant browse. The Hessian speciality of ‘Grie Soß’, a local herb sauce, comes as highly recommended as many other national and international delicacies, which promise to whet your appetite at this locale. After indulging in the Kleinmarkthalle’s delicatessen, why not brighten your stroll home with a lovely bouquet of flowers." - Bureau Mitte

On a long layover in Frankfurt, our family stumbled upon a charming local market. It's very much a food-centric spot, with tempting street food everywhere – we just wished we weren't so full! We did find some authentic German honey and beautiful plants. It's a fantastic place to escape the heat, offering a cool indoor experience on a sunny day. My only regret was not finding a souvenir that could survive the journey home in warm weather.

This is a must visit in Frankfurt, It has dozens of independent market stalls offering almost anything food related you can think of. many vendors offer free samples of products so you can try before you buy. Me and my girlfriend brought dried fruits, pineapple and apple, to make this decision the vendor gave us samples of about 10 different products. we also tried several cheeses and meats. this place is even fun to go and browse. prices were reasonable. close to other near by attractions.

Worth it

Google
Kleinmarkthalle is such a fun place to spend a lunch time or afternoon! There’s so many places to get delicious food and drinks and it has a really electric atmosphere! We visited on a weekend and the market was extended to stands outside, which were packed. It is definitely one to expect to be crowded but it was well worth the visit. I would recommend going for drinks so that you can walk around and pick up some deli ingredients for snacks 😋.

There's something for everyone at this market! Local and international delicacies. It's great to see small vendors selling their unique offerings beside more established stalls.

Extensive and bustling city market building. Tight walking spaces and usually busy. Prices are reasonable for what it is. Lots of great things to look at and taste. TIP: Don't forget to go upstairs. There is also a limited amount of seating there.

If you want to feel the heartbeat of Frankfurt, look no further than Kleinmarkthalle. This indoor market is a vibrant and bustling hub where locals and visitors mingle, offering a slice of authentic German daily life with an international twist. From the moment you walk through the entrance — a simple but welcoming sign urging you “Auf die Kleinmarkthalle!” — you know you’re in for a treat. The market is alive with the hum of conversations, the aroma of fresh produce, and the dazzling colors of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and baked goods. Inside, the variety is stunning. You’ll find gorgeous cakes and tarts, like the ones beautifully displayed here: crumbly Streuselkuchen, glossy strawberry tarts, and towering cheesecakes dusted with powdered sugar. Each looks homemade, hearty, and utterly irresistible — perfect for a midday treat or a sweet souvenir. Further down the lanes, stalls burst with fresh produce: juicy strawberries, brilliant red currants, exotic fruits, and an impressive display of white asparagus (Spargel), a true German spring delicacy. Fresh mushrooms and artisan products add to the rich variety, and everything is beautifully laid out, making it a pleasure just to browse. The layout of the hall is practical yet charming. Upstairs, there’s a mezzanine where you can get a bird’s-eye view of the market’s bustle below — a sea of stalls and colorful canopies. Small eateries and cafés are scattered around, perfect for taking a break and sampling the local flavors. One charming find is Mathilda, a stand advertising homemade brownies and tarts, with a playful chalkboard encouraging you to “Eat cake!” — sound advice when surrounded by such delicious temptation. Navigating the market is easy, with wide aisles and a relaxed vibe that invites slow wandering. Despite its central location, Kleinmarkthalle retains a sense of local authenticity — it’s not just a tourist attraction but a beloved part of Frankfurt life.

Google
I like the garden shop inside this market, they got heaps of veggies and flowers seed/bulbs. There is bakery shop, veggies market, butcher, Asian groceries/spicies. All the shop is neat and tidy, very organized. Clean environment.

We came to look around and enjoy the overall atmosphere of the market place. Lots of different stalls to try and plenty of places to sit and enjoy food and drinks. It was busy when we visited but not too crowded (weekday, afternoon).

Yelp
Terrific inner city market This is a lovely market with glorious displays of meat, fruit, vegetables, cheese, smallgoods, spices, bakery items, herbs, plants etc There are also plenty of dining options if you wish to eat at the market! It's wonderful to have such a good market in the inner city.

Yelp
Kleinmarkthalle in Frankfurt is a historical marketplace that has been a culinary hub for over a century. Originally from 1879, the market has weathered numerous changes, including significant reconstruction after World War II. Today, it stands as evidence that Frankfurt is dedicated to its culinary culture. The market is bustling and packed with over 60 stalls from fresh produce, gourmet cheeses to fish... you name it. During our visit, we dined at the Spanish tapas restaurant within the market. The queso fresco was rich and creamy and the spicy patatas bravas were a treat. I can't get over the garlic oil shrimp. I couldn't stop dipping and chowing on the oil and flavor soaked bread. I love me a market!!!

Yelp
I love this place and have been here many time and finally decided I needed to let others know. Time to stop being selfish and let others in on the secret. This is an indoor market inside of an old warehouse. There are many different stalls filled with many different things. Everything from plants to butchers. There's a chocolate shop in here that is my favorite (and my wife's when I bring her chocolate). I come here for coffee also. Upstairs there are several wine stalls also, with a usual decent crowd in attendance. I would implore any Yelper out there to try this place out. You won't regret it I promise you!

Yelp
Absolutely incredible. A feist to the eyes. Thinking of preparing a special meal at home. Then come here. Thinking of getting some cheese, wine, and meats for a Picnic, then come here. If it's raining outside, then come here as it's indoors. Bon appetite.

Yelp
Super cool small market hall that sells international fruits and veggies, food, ready to made food, smoothies, and fresh flowers

Yelp
Outstanding. I love this place. Great veg, cheeses, wine, meats, flowers etc. I always take friends here when visiting the area or new to Frankfurt. It is more expensive than other places but the quality and diverse range of products that you can find here is wonderful. Sipping a coffee or a glass of wine here is a beautiful experience.

Yelp
On a Saturday at lunch time, the Kleinmarkthalle was packed. Wall to wall and that's a good thing. Where there are people, there's going to be great food. Florists, fresh butcher, fresh vegetables, fresh fish and seafood, jams and juices, wines and beers. Cooked foods of all types. Loaded with stalls and with queues at the best of them. There are some counters inside where you can lay out your food to eat and there are some tables outside with a lot more room to enjoy. I only had thirty minutes (it was our walking tour's lunch break) so I made the most of it with a sausage from Schrieber that was an 18 minute long queue. Some take plastic, most only take cash so be prepared. I did not see an ATM but there probably is one here somewhere. Some vendors speak enough English, some probably do not. You can always get by with the usual point and grunt.

Yelp
This market is outstanding. Spoiler alert: there is a high likelihood that you get lost and be overwhelmed the first time you visit, but my goodness the variety is outstanding and exhaustive. There are fish stands, meat stands, olive stands, bread stands, pasta stands, cheese stands, wine stands, flowers etc. Majority of the stands offered free samples - there are many slices of salami and olive bits to be eaten before making a purchase decision. The place was packed, but was fun for people watching as well. I came on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon and there were also tents set up outside serving food/wine. As if the market inside was not big enough! What a wonderful place. A carnivale of sights, sounds and smells.

Yelp
"Klein" but lots of good selection of merchandise and plants including live vanilla orchids. Wide array of whole and ground spices with very helpful vendor.

Yelp
This place has everything you need from farm fresh meats, sausages, vegetables, fruits, baked goods to flowers. It is very clean. It is an indoor market in Frankfurt.

Yelp
So I might have had too high of expectations. From the pictures I saw I thought it was bigger and I envisioned it as a Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington, USA. Still it was a cool find in the heart of Frankfurt. We enjoyed walking through the market & looking at the beautiful fruit & vegetable displays. The aroma of smoked sausages as we walked through was delicious. My friend bought an assortment of spices from an awesome stand that provides lots of samples & free cups of tea. They threw in a free bonus package. We both bought fresh fruit cups to take to go for the next mornings breakfast. Will go again.

Yelp
There are two parts to Kleinmarkthalle, a true produce and food market and a semi-outdoor space where there are several stalls to get alcoholic beverages and snacks. We came here because I like checking out local markets. And as we browsed we decided to buy some snacks (prosciutto, olives, fruits) and have a spontaneous picnic. We got some lillet spritz and sat down at the square nearby. Perfect weekend morning!

Yelp
I am so in love with this market. This is a must see when you are in Frankfurt, Germany. It's a beautiful market full of beautiful vendors. The vendors range from cured meat to flower arrangements to seafood to nuts and veggies. The list goes on and on really. This is a perfect spot to get a glass of wine and take a breather from site-seeing all day. There are seats where you can sit if you buy something. You can eat, drink and explore all in one large building. Again, take advantage of this wonderful landmark. Take some time to explore the market!

Yelp
LOVED IT! It's very small but OMG so many vendors and stalls! Didn't have time to really do anything but look. Next time though I'm totally setting aside time and eating, hopefully I'll have an Air BnB and I'll be able to shop and cook as well! Loved all the fresh produce and the Butchers
google avatar

Monika Z.

Yelp
Lovely market vibe with many stalls. Enjoyed especially shopping for Mexican products and cheese. I also had one of the most delicious German sausages in my life there. This is Frankfurt hidden treasure.

Yelp
Hiding in plain sight, this indoor market is a pleasant surprise. Tucked away between the Zeil shopping district and the Dom/Römer tourist area, the Kleinmarkthalle is a fun place to visit. It never seems to be overcrowded with tourists, but is always full just the same. The market is mainly meats and produce (but also some flowers and such) so it's a nice change up for lunch. Top Three Highlights: 1.) Centrally located in the "downtown" area 2.) Several butcher stands to choose from 3.) Not subject to weather like some of Frankfurt's other markets

Yelp
So Kleinmarkthalle would be a 5/5 if I could afford to shop there. But yea.... I have been going to Kleinmarkthalle for years but never really took to going there to actually buy anything until maybe like 1.5 years ago. I only go there on weekdays typically as weekends are packed and I get very anxious being too closely surrounded by others. Kleinmarkthalle literally has anything you could ever wish for. Spices, several butchers, bakers, fromageries galore, florists, produce, coffee... you name it, you can find it here. So what is the problem? The freaking prices. Holy hell. So I went in here on a mission for serrano peppers, poblano peppers, cherimoyas, fresh oregano, and watercress one day... I came out with only the poblano because I couldn't afford anything else. One poblano pepper = 3,50 Euros. What the hell!??! Now I know this is an imported good, but geeeeeeez. I haven't seen serranos here ever, on the other hand, despite try to track them down one day. Despite prices, every time I see a tomatillo, I contemplate spending at least a fiver to buy one. But I resist temptation. The spices here are insanely expensive too. But they have them all! Looking for ras el hanout? Got it. Looking for achiote? Got it. Looking for Murray River salt? Got it too... just expect to pay an arm and a leg for them. One place I find semi-affordable is the Mexican stall. They sell La Costena products, mole sauce, tostadas, masa harina, etc. The price points are not cheap, but not as bad if compared to the price point for the rest of the stalls. Sometimes there is a man working behind the counter and he loves a good chat. But sometimes you will have no one there to assist and will have to check out behind at the Asian stall. No worries either way- but the guy working there is incredibly nice and helpful so it is nice to see him there. Despite coming out empty handed nearly every visit, I always take the time to visit the market when in this area of the city. I love exploring and seeing all the products I miss from my travels around the world... and even the slight harassing to buy or try things makes me feel like I'm in another part of the world, even if just for a few minutes. I highly recommend Kleinmarkthalle to visitors to Frankfurt and even the locals living here. Just because I can't afford to constantly shop here doesn't mean others can't... it is a great piece of Frankfurt and something I am proud to show tourists when they come to the city.

Yelp
This is a must visit location even if you are not actually shopping for luscious comestibles. Quality is always high and plenty of choice and number of stands keep me returning.

Yelp
I am a fan of it ' it but it is expensive... Not al products are first class but here you get a mix add products from all countries and some off the bistros are very very good. I love the pasta at the first floor with fresh fish ;-) and I always buy Kaktus here for my Mexican recipes. See you soon.

Yelp
Must visit place in Frankfurt. Of course market is cool, unique and expensiveeeeee ($$$$) for everyday shopping. But if u are visiting or just need some unique ingredients come here (salted cod, oils, cheeses, nuts). The outdoor wine terrace is awesome and always end up talking w table next to you.

Yelp
The "small market hall" which means as much as the "retail market hall" or "retail farmers' market" is an old Frankfurt institution. If you need strange meats, exotic fruits, or just plain old local produce, this is the place. Interspersed are stands with ethnic gourmet items or even eating establishments like a tapas bar. This is definitely a place to check out even as a tourist.

Yelp
What´s not to like about this place. You can get everything you want right here. You can buy persian, turkish, latino and of course german things here.Though certain things will cost a bit more you will get great quality meats, vegetables, spices etc. Oh and make sure to stop by Schreiber´s and have a traditional Rindswurst or any other sausage they serve.Everything tastes just great!

Yelp
I love this place. Start hungry on 1.OG with a big plate of Spaghetti frutti di Mare, go to next door for some wine and olive oil selection, a cup of coffee downstairs, then you can buy anything you want in the market, there is also a live fishing stand in UG that has seasonal catches. By the way there is a Wurst stand on EG that is always lining up, must be good.

Yelp
If I could afford it, I would shop here every day. The produce is of an outstanding quality and the tradesmen are often very knowledgeable about their wares. The large poultry stall for instance was able to give me expert advice when cooking goose for the first time at Christmas, the butchers on the opposite side, underneath the upper level were patient and helpful as I tried to get the right cut of pork to cook my own ham and a friendly costermonger remembered my name on only my second visit there. Just about the perfect shopping experience. In addition there are also some excellent prepared food stalls where you can stop for a bite to eat (on the upper level the fishmongers does some great options, or the spanish tapas place in the NW corner does totally yummy empanadillas made fresh at the stall).
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
This is a nice market hall, small but well organized and pleasant to walk through. There is a good selection of fresh fruits and exotic nuts from the middle east. Meat stalls carry an okay selection, no fresh seafood. Why only 3 stars, because there is a wonderful "european style" market hall in my home town of Toronto, I have a pretty high expectation when I visit a place in Europe.
google avatar

Magda J.

Yelp
My favorite place to come here for fresh fruits, veggies, meat, spice, etc. Love this place so much since everything is so fresh! Super busy on Saturdays though but if you go during the week it is less crowded. The people are friendly and attentive. Cash ONLY. There are also little tapas restaurants or cafes where you can grab food or a drink. You can enjoy shopping and then sit down & drink and eat something. I always come back here.

Yelp
A "Frankfurter Original"! The place to go shopping for vegetables, fruits (local and exotic), meat, cheese, spicery and flowers.

Yelp
I was on a walking tour and our guide brought us by. Definitely one of the highlights of my stay in Frankfurt. Seemed like a lot of locals shop here though I saw tourists too. It was heavenly, so much fresh fruit, breads, meat and food, anything you could imagine. The priced were so reasonable and I got to try a variety of German food and gluewein, a mulled Wine, which was yummy. I wish it had been open for dinner because i would have gone back. It is closed on Sundays.

Yelp
I was looking for some good burrata here. Although prices are really high, I didn't find any real burrata that I liked. Highly disappointed
google avatar

Rob O.

Yelp
Every other weekend I am still going to this place and it never gets boring. Yesterday all at the market were offering something with a Christmas Flair or better said touch. After the grocery shopping one can finish the day right with a nice glass of Riesling or any other wine.
google avatar

Yelp
Cool 2 story market worth visiting. The number of butchers and variety of sausages and cured meats is truly impressive. They also have many different ready-to-eat items and good vendor diversity. I've heard the cannibal sandwich is killer - so don't miss that.
google avatar

Gilford S.

Yelp
If you are a foodie and visitor to Frankfurt you must go here at least once. Sizable market hall with wares from across Europe and the Orient. A must see.
google avatar

Ed A.

Yelp
Must see if in Frankfurt - needs smell-a-vision app - plenty of wine stops as well - buy what you want and bring over to wine bars on upper floor. Breads, brats, fruits/vegs are are beautiful. Nice Spanish tapas bar too - Italian upstairs looks and smells fantastic - or get plate of oysters upstairs too. Just can't eat it all!

Yelp
Great place to wander for an hour, don't forget to check out the book market at the back entrance for great discounts on coffee table art books.

Yelp
Horrible experience in this place. Me and my boyfriend went there on saturday morning expecting to buy quality products and maybe have a glass of wine. We stopped in a cheese stand because we wanted to buy different kind of cheeses, we wanted to feel the bouquet of one of the samples they had exposed and after 5 seconds one short seller with fake italian accent and black apron started to shout and yield very strong in the way all people may listen telling that I was an ignorant because I didn't eat all the cheeses they had and that I was behaving like an EAST EUROPEAN because I was just watching without buying. Of course he was shouting and shouting and didn't understood until he got close to me agressively. Fortunately my boyfriend was there and started to defend me otherwise this man was about to react in a very violent way. I just wanted to avoid any fight because discussion when from bad to worst so I ate the words of this man and told my boyfriend in a polite way to go away from there, was no sense to argue with that person. Of course everybody was watching and some people been upset because this seller was too busy telling racist comments instead selling to other people. I went out from there very sad because I'm not used to this aggressions and my boyfriend was ashamed. We work hard and travel a lot during the week. We didn't want to ruin our saturday so we went to Galleria and bought some nice food and a couple of wonderful Cuvée Rosé Laurent-Perrier :) J'adore. This klein market is expensive and I wouldn't have any problem to buy there but I don't accept people treat me like garbage. Why? I don't understand. My vote is totally negative and people must know that these stupid situations sadly happen in this place.

Qype User (muchog…)

Yelp
One of my favourite spots in town . prices a little like an Aphoteke (drugstore!) but decidedly first class products from all over the world .

Yelp
nothing better than a saturday stroll through this wonderful place.... even if you dont buy anything (which would be a mistake) its just great to see all those nice things and you can shamelessly try a lot of stuff esp from those middle eastern delicatessen corners.

Qype User (spinkp…)

Yelp
Love it, here I can get everything from biscuits that I love from Italy to good old PG tips tea bags! There is a plant stall there that is very reasonable too.

Qype User (ionicb…)

Yelp
Here you can find almost anything when it comes to food, fruits or vegetables etc. Some prices can be slightly high depending on the vendor. If you live in Frankfurt and have not yet visited then I urge you to go!
