Cape Town, South Africa, Travel Guide

"Set in an early 20th-century house with an equally impressive garden, this boutique brasserie serves lunch and dinner downtown; from intimate candle-lit corners to tree-shaded garden tables, the space suits any occasion, and I like to lunch here and listen to live jazz on Sundays." - Katie Jackson Katie Jackson Katie Jackson is a New York City-based writer who covers travel, food, and more. On the Grid : Kloof Street House

"Look, we might as well be honest with one another, Cape Town is where cool came to stay. It is likely that every hipster that ever existed makes their way to the Mother City for pilgrimage from all over the world. Thankfully this means many good things – like good jazz in dimly lit rooms for example. Kloof street house leads the charge in this regard. They have a live jazz band to chill out to on lazy Sunday afternoons. Add to that quality tapas and a gin and tonic or two, and you have a winning formula for summers in the city." - Yellow Door Collective

On the Grid : The Deckhouse

"This trendy Kloof Street restaurant-come-pub is the perfect place to enjoy an American backyard-style grill in a casual atmosphere. The ambiance and décor make you feel like you’re on a beach holiday, and the hanging crab pots and nets pay tribute to the freshness and quality of the food. Although hard work, the crab pots are well worth the effort, and a combination of dishes to share amongst friends is definitely a good idea. The best thing about this culinary adventure is that whether lovers of seafood, barbeque, or both, there is something for everyone!" - Yellow Door Collective

13 Best Bars in Cape Town

"At Kloof Street House, the cocktails are delightful, and although the prices are steep, most are specific to Kloof Street House—so you're paying for something unique. The bar also offers an extensive range of spirits, local wines, Champagne, and satisfying bar bites like baked camembert. A restaurant first, it has a full menu, along with bar bites like baked camembert with onion marmalade, hummus and pita, harissa calamari, and gorgonzola-mushroom arancini. In all, this is a great destination for a catch-up with friends or an unplanned date night when all you want is lounge music and decadent decor." - Seth Shezi

We have visited Kloof Street House twice, and overall it is a wonderful place that we would recommend. On the plus side, the garden and interiors are absolutely beautiful — very atmospheric and stylish. Making a reservation through the website was easy, and the email communication was excellent, with very quick and helpful responses. The food was delicious on both visits, and the staff were friendly and attentive. The only downside was our New Year’s Eve experience. We had reserved a table and paid for a package that included a show, dinner, and a retro transfer to Asoka. Unfortunately, we only received the dinner. While the food was outstanding and our waitress was lovely, we did not see any show and did not receive the transfer, which was a bit disappointing.

I wasn’t aware of how important reservations were in Cape Town so I was unable to snag a reservation here at Kloof Street House. Wanting to dine here, I decided to try my luck and walk in. Upon arrival to a jam packed restaurant at 9pm a table opened up in the back outside and I was seated immediately. I was greeted promptly and placed my order for a drink. The drink took very long to come (about 20 minutes) which made me decide to only have one. I ordered the steak tartare and the prawns of recommendation of my waitress. The steak tartare was amazing and one of the better ones I’ve had. The prawn dish was delicious too but I wish the prawns were bigger. To conclude, you should definitely visit here when on holiday in Cape Town. Be sure to make reservations I’d say a month or two in advance.

Kloof Street House is definitely the place that it thinks it is. My friend and I had such an amazing time. We were late for our reservation but they kept our seat, and we weren't pressured to leave since the place got packed and busy. The tables were a bit ontop of each other and it was hard to move or get out your seat but other than that, I could not hear the couples next to us. The food was quite pricey but I give it 1000/10. My overall experience was beyond what I had expected.

Came for dinner and brunch! Fewer veg options at brunch minus granola but the lentil dish for dinner was fantastic. If you like interior decor and eclectic design, you will not be bored exploring this historic space!

My husband and I visited Kloof Street House for their summer lunch special and opted for the two course option at R250 per person. For starters, I had the arancini and my husband had the mussels, both were delicious. He really enjoyed his main of ostrich fillet sandwich, while I found my white fish a bit on the bland side. We shared the famous salted caramel cheesecake off of the ala carte menu, for dessert, which was yummy, as always. Service was okay. Our mains took a long time to arrive due to a kitchen issue. The waitress and manager did apologize, which we appreciated. A bit more warmth and attentiveness would have made a noticeable difference. Beautiful setting with some great food, but there’s room to elevate the overall experience.

An exceptional experience from start to finish. I had the fish of the day and I can honestly say it is in my top five meals ever. The cocktail menu is exquisite!!! The service was outstanding.

Dinner at Club Kloof was excellent from start to finish. The ambiance is stylish but relaxed, and the menu feels thoughtful and well curated. Every dish we tried was full of flavor and beautifully presented. Our waitress, Tyra, was particularly wonderful — warm, attentive, and added to an already great evening. I highly recommend everything on the menu and my boyfriend and I said this was one of our favorite restaurants so far in Cape Town! Book a head for a spot inside

We had a wonderful dinner at Kloof Street House. The atmosphere was beautiful, the food (vegetarian) was excellent, and every dish felt thoughtfully prepared. A special thank-you to our hostess, Charlotte — she was incredibly kind and attentive, and truly made our experience even better. We left feeling genuinely taken care of and can’t wait to return.
