This was my home away from home during a few nights in Bergen during the summer of 2012. I was traveling with two friends and part of the reason we chose this hotel was the availability of a triple room at a reasonable price. Bergen is on the smaller size and easy to walk around. This hotel is located in a quieter area, which seemed more residential. It was a few minutes walk to the harbor, though on return it is an uphill walk.
Our room was on the top floor and it had a skylight which provided a ton of natural light. The staff offered to carry our bags up the stairs as there was no elevator/lift. The skylight had a shade so we could block out the light when we were sleeping at night. Compared to the size of the room, the bathroom was massive. I think we could have done with a smaller bathroom and larger sleeping area. The room worked out just fine, but the amount of space dedicated to the bathroom was generous.
While I normally don't focus on a hotel's breakfast, it's really impossible not to do so. One of the most unbelievable breakfast displays I have ever encountered. We were sincerely impressed by the choices available each morning. The breakfast room was located on the main floor, just to the right of the reception area. There was a counter with assorted cured meats, fish, pâtés, cheeses, cereals/granola, breads, and jellies, mostly with a Norwegian theme. All of the breakfast items were labeled. Everything was locally sourced. There were also assorted juices and teas available in addition to coffee. The staff did a wonderful job keeping the area well-stocked and clean. Everyone in my group loved the breakfast and thought it was one of the highlights of the hotel.
If you go on their website, you can read about the hotel's mission as a work training program for those transitioning back into the workforce. It's wonderful to be able to support such efforts and receive kind service in return. If I return to Bergen, I would stay here again in a minute. I loved being off the beaten path in the city, as it forces you to get out and explore.
