I’ve Lived in Thailand for 12 Years and These Are My 6 Favorite Islands in the Country

"A small, hilly island of about eight square miles renowned as Thailand’s diving capital thanks to clear waters brimming with vibrant marine life and an abundance of scuba schools; it’s reachable by a two-hour ferry from a nearby larger island. The west, particularly Sairee Beach and its surroundings, is home to a wide range of restaurants (from Burmese to Szechuan) and a standout wine bar. For wellness and sunset views there are on-island resorts offering specialized experiences and spectacular headland vistas." - Jeninne Lee-St. John

Great place to snorkeling, and learn to scuba dive. Awesome blue waters, colorful fish. Very steep narrow roads.

We liked the island and would return. We got there during a monsoon in February when they never usually get rain, the downtown area by the 7-11 was flooding for a few days but we managed to tour the island on our rented scooter anyway 😎

Smaller island, main activity for tourists is scuba diving, but we'll worth a visit, for as long as you can spare, even if you are a non diver. Great views, beautiful beaches, fantastic food, friendly people, cheaper than some other islands.

This island has incredible natural beauty. The parties on the beach at night will attract young party animals .. ..with loud music until early hours ...so a stay in Sairee will mean accepting this vibe. The narrow shopping streets and especially Walking Street promenade along the le gth of the beach are charming and get packed at Sunset hours. If youre into diving there are SOO many options for training and plenty of early morning boat trips to take you out to spectacular spots. If party us not your vibe ..find accommodation at either end of the main beach for a quieter stay Its pretty walkable as it's a compact area, but simple scooter and bike hire will enable you to explore beyond the main bay into tge steeper headlands. Busy season - Feb can be flooded with the young and beautiful fun seekers. But the charm of this tiny island can also satisfy families, adventurers and others looking for a water sports based holiday. The local islanders are always happy, easy and courteous hosts. Treat them with respect and you'll enjoy their hospitality. The Italian and Thai food is delicious, plentiful and inexpensive. Good coffee available everywhere.

Spending 10 days here for diving which is amazing. As a runner there is not a lot of places to run. There is a main road that is very narrow and dangerous to walk let alone run. The “walking” sidewalk is also used by crazy driving motorcyclists and tons of tourists. Lots of good restaurants and places to shop.

I want to share my sadness for the Disappearance of the island of Ko tao ... at least as we knew it !!! Once a paradise, today it has been completely distorted by mass tourism. Killed by accolades from TripAdxxxx , Booxxx.com and the like, which have turned it into a caricature of itself. Ko Tao, which would have deserved to be protected as a national park - just like the neighbouring islands - has now become a sort of Asian Miami Beach. Tourists everywhere, prices now in line with Mediterranean destinations, hotels still the same … for the records ;), and streets invaded by young people on mopeds moving from one beach to another, leaving behind plastic, empty bottles of beers and a feeling of melancholy for those who really knew it. R.I.P. Ko Tao (Once perl of Asia and alive, now only barely surviving) Visiting KoTao since 2004, all change after the Awards best island of the Year 2023. Maybe was only this week like this but yes … really over tourism arrived ! Love KoTao ;) What next ?

Small island & too crowded with all that vehicles & motors. I don’t understand why the authority in Koh Tao allows the citizens to own so many big vehicles & big motors around this island. This is too chaotic. Unless the foods and the sunset are ok, still decent. I hope that the local people of this island realize this too much for their small island. Need strict regulations for owning such vehicles/ motors. This unnecessary for small island. Too commercialized. I am sorry for giving not good review😥

Koh Tao is a paradise for beach lovers and diving enthusiasts! The island offers crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and a laid-back atmosphere. Whether you’re snorkeling at Shark Bay, enjoying the sunset at Sairee Beach, or exploring the viewpoints, there’s always something breathtaking to see. The locals are friendly, and there are plenty of cozy cafés and beachfront restaurants to relax in. If you’re looking for a tropical getaway, Koh Tao is a must-visit!
