How Australia's Tourism Industry Is Recovering a Year After the Devastating Bushfires

"For many, the enduring memory of the bushfires will be the images of injured and disorientated koalas being plucked from burning forests. Seventy-nine of them ended up at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital on the Mid North Coast of NSW. While it was a stressful summer for volunteers working around the clock to nurse the influx of bushfire victims, President Sue Ashton tells me that not only have most of those koalas been successfully returned to the wild, but a crowdfunding campaign that raked in a staggering $7.9 million AUD has also helped the hospital fast-track some of its long-term goals. "We've been able to build 140 wildlife drinking stations that have been distributed across NSW and to other states, and we've also brought forward our wild koala breeding program, which will be a world first," says Ashton proudly. Like the hospital, the breeding center will also be open to the public upon its completion." - Travel + Leisure Editors

I recommend going early when the koalas are still active and having their mealtime. It was heartwarming to see how the unwell or injured koalas were cared for. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the volunteers were doing an amazing job. During our visit, there were four joeys, and it was wonderful to see them all. Evans, an injured koala on a special diet, was a delight to watch as he enjoyed his meal. The educational section was also excellent, providing interesting koala facts and valuable knowledge.

An amazing experience! We gained fascinating insights into the organization’s work at the Koala Hospital. The dedicated volunteers were incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer all our questions. We were lucky to spot a few koalas, but it’s clear that the focus here is not on showcasing the animals for tourism but on their protection and care—huge respect for that! The hospital will be closing soon, but there is a koala breeding center on the other side of the city, run by the same organization. We were encouraged to visit for more valuable insights. I highly recommend a visit—thank you for your incredible work, and keep it up!

We visited the hospital with the family on a thursday morning. The best option is to go early, as they get food in between 8.30 and 9.00. They also get food in the evening. We didn’t book a tour guide but Maz was around and gave alot of information. We could ask all and any questions about the koalas and their way of life. It’s great to support the hospital as they so take care of them with care. Would recommend a visit!

Such a wonderful experience! The family enjoyed it. Good to see we have hospitals for these beautiful animals. They even have a store with cute items to buy. They also have a heritage onsite with cafe with memorabilia. Highly recommended!

The Koala Hospital was beautifully designed, and they take in injured and sick koalas, caring for them until they are ready to be released back into the wild. If a koala can no longer survive in the wild, they are given their own area, where they receive excellent care. The staff is very friendly and seems to truly love their job, providing lots of information during the visit. It’s really important to me that animals are treated well, and the hospital made a very positive impression. I highly recommend visiting!

Pretty cute and informative koala hospital. So sad to see the injured koalas being rehabilitated. This is a non profit organization and pretty affordable to enter. When you purchase a ticket here, you are able to get entrance into their sister organization, which is the breeding center about a 15 minute drive away.

What a wonderful place for rescued Koalas. When you visit in the morning when the Koalas get food they are awake. Since September 2024 the hospital needs to charge an entry fee because people weren’t donating enough. An adult pays 12,50$ to treat the sick Koalas. We loved the visit and only met very kind volunteers.
