Two backpackers trying to escape the very touristy areas.
We went here after Koh Lanta - we got a ferry with van transfer in Koh Lanta for 450 baht per person. Ferry to here took 45 minutes to Koh Jum pier. We then left the island at Mutu pier to Laem Kruat peir (that was 140 baht per person), that took around 30 mins.
It felt like a more untouched island. There is clearly some investment in tourism going on as we seen a bit of construction going on, perhaps new accommodation and tourism infrastructure.
I hope it stays the same. There’s not a ton to do, but lovely beaches, kayaking etc. It was our first time renting a scooter ever because it was quiet enough to feel like we had the chance to learn.
Would recommend staying at the Velora Bay - we had a lovely stay here and the surrounding restaurants were great. We also stayed at Coco Canopy which was very nice, this was a little bit quieter and out the way, but on the higher end in terms of cost. 300 baht per day seems standard for a scooter.
Only thing I’d say is that the island needs to pay attention to the stray dogs (I say that as a huge dog lover), but they are quite intimidating.
All in all - our favourite island that we explored on our Thailand leg of our trip.
Stunning. We made sure to take plenty cash as we didn’t see any ATMs. Hotels seem pretty decent for picking up guests and dropping off at piers for free.
