This was our fourth stay at our 'home away from home', the Komaneka at Bisma and we are already looking forward to our next visit to this superb hotel! Having known Ubud since 1982, the town itself, although it has not lost its charm, has become extremely crowded and the traffic is appalling. However, the Komaneka at Bisma, although only a ten/fifteen minute walk from the centre, is an oasis of tranquillity and the perfect place for a relaxing break.|We stayed for six nights in a pool villa - delightfully quiet with only the song of the birds and insects and the faint sound of the river below in the gorge. The villas are extremely comfortable: excellent beds, ample space for clothes and storage, a workstation with convenient power sockets, the 'signature' luxurious Komaneka bathroom suite with both indoor and outdoor showers, as well as a huge deck containing dining table and chairs, minibar and tea and coffee station with very high grade complimentary coffee pods, allowing you to experience different coffees from many other Indonesian islands, two loungers and the wonderful infinity pool - all of this benefitting from the view across the gorge, over the rice fields to the forest. We had a slight problem with the lavatory flush which was dealt with quickly and efficiently by the hotel's engineer.|The rest of the hotel facilities are outstanding. The main infinity pool is definitely one of the highlights, and on previous visits,we have spent many happy hours here. On this visit however, my husband was unable to use the submerged steep stone steps into the pool because of problems with his knees and the ladder, which he had previously used, had been removed. As we had our own smaller pool which he could use, this did not impact our enjoyment to any great degree, but we did bring it up with the charming manager, who could not have been kinder and assured us the ladder would be beck in place on our next visit! In recompense, he insisted the hotel would pick up the tab for my spa treatment, which was extremely kind and totally unexpected!|On previous visits we have breakfasted at the hotel but usually taken advantage of the wide variety of restaurants available in Ubud for dinner. However, on this visit, rainy evenings and the problems with traffic on Jalan Hari Raya meant that we dined at the hotel three times! The food - both Indonesian and European - was excellent. I love Indonesian food and would generally not bother with European food in Bali but, for some reason, I got a yen for Pasta with Pesto, which happened to be on the European menu and it was the best I have ever eaten - a pleasant and unexpected surprise! The breakfasts were excellent with more choice than I remember and, as is usual in Bali, truly excellent coffee. Complimentary afternoon tea gave a chance to try small local delicacies, as well as some very good patisserie!|However, as many others have said, the true highlight of the Komaneka are the staff - from the manager to the lovely man who kept the paths free of slippery leaves and who always looked pleased to see me, they are immaculately trained and utterly charming. We were always treated with kindness and respect, with none of the obsequiousness we have often found in European hotels of the same standard. To my shame, I forgot to record any names at the time, but in a sense, no one stood out as everyone was outstanding!|If age and health allow us to return to our beloved Bali, we will undoubtedly return to the Komaneka at Bisma and we cannot recommend it more highly!
