"At first glance, the slender wedge appears to be a uniform hunk of dark chocolate. A few swift taps from a fork are sufficient to shatter the exterior coating, revealing dozens of wafer-thin golden layers. German Baumkuchen, or “tree cake,” derives its name from these interior rings, which look much like the cross-section of a tree. The oldest known recipes date back to 1450, when this towering confection was served as a showstopper at wedding feasts. Like Lithuanian sakotis, Romanian kürtőskalács, and French gâteaux à la broche, it belongs to an extensive family of European spit-roasted cakes. To make Baumkuchen, bakers brush a thin layer of buttery batter onto a rotating spit over a live fire. As soon as the layer caramelizes, the baker must immediately brush on the next to prevent burning. Each layer adds an additional depth of flavor, courtesy of the Maillard reaction. Given that the process, which may be repeated as many as 30 times, requires considerable skill, time, and special equipment, it’s understandable that Baumkuchen is generally reserved for special occasions—it’s seldom seen in Germany except around Christmas. Yet at Konditorei Buchwald, Berlin’s oldest continually running confectionery, this labor-intensive treat is on the menu all year long, available either in glazed rounds to take away or whole slices enrobed in chocolate. Kaffee und Kuchen, or an afternoon pause for coffee and cake, is still a borderline sacred ritual for many Germans. Since 1852, Kondotorei Buchwald’s canal-side, sun-drenched patio has been one of the best places in town for it. And while their Baumkuchen is certainly a scene-stealer, it’s far from the only draw. From a Florentine apple cake covered in sugary, sliced almonds to a voluminously fluffy honey cake topped with a marzipan bumblebee, there are plenty of other tempting treats in the pastry case. Know Before You Go The café and bakery are open daily from 11am to 6pm. Especially on sunny afternoons and weekends, arrive early before they sell out of the best slices." - Diana Hubbell

Google
Very delicious cakes. The Konditorei has made a name for its Baumkuchen, so definitely worth a try. The interior design is very warm and welcoming, feels like sitting in your grandma’s living room. The place gets very crowded though, you may need to have some patience to get seated.

Google
Nice old style cafe in Moabit which is always full with regulars. The staff are nice and the overall experience was very good. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the coffee they serve was just normal coffee you can get out of any automated machine. It would have been really great to have good coffee in this place to go well with the amazing cakes they serve. Other than that, no complaints.

Google
I liked the atmosphere and the vibe of the Cafe but the salted caramel baumkuchen was a miss for me. It was too sweet and rich for my liking and you couldn't tell it was salted caramel flavor. The group I was with liked theirs tho. I might come back and try something else.

Google
I loved the "montrate" cake. I don't remember the name, but it was delicious!!!? The best one. The service was suuuuper outstanding as well... After lunch it is crowded but they are fast and you can order at your table. 3 cakes and 3 drinks (coffee, tea and cappuccino) was 23$ everything. Accept card. Love it

Google
Really cute and good cake shop. I was recommended the regional cake by a friend and honestly thought it was a little disappointing and dry. The matcha latte was real good, and the other cakes looked phenomenal. I’d give my cake a 2/5 but the others looked much better so I’m giving the ranking more. Sadly didn’t have Black Forest cake but I was told this is the spot to go to

My friend took me to this Café for my birthday and I absolutely love it! It’s situated on a corner opposite to the canal in an old building. It’s been said that this is one of the oldest patisseries in Berlin and they used to serve the royal family. The interior feels like you have went back in time, that old, classic and vintage flare is what makes it special. The service was good and the cakes were okay. I had the Irish Creme cake and my friend had the Black Forest. The coffee however, was not good.

Nice cafe by the Spree River. We dropped by for coffee and cake. I liked the Art Nouveau interior and the cake was really tasty. I had a Black Forest cake here, and it was really yummy! I would love to try other cakes too.

Google
I ordered a slice of the banana cake because it looked tasty and decently sized compared to the other cakes that were there. Unfortunately, the taste was mediocre and I was very wrong about the size - the slice that I got was half the size of the one on display. The price is too high for this quality and quantity!

Yelp
This is a historical location for fine pastries. This place has been in business for 160 years and is a local gem, both location and offerings. You select your pastries upfront and order from your table. Very reasonable for the quality of these fine bakery items. Coffee is reasonable here and quite overpriced in the local area. With two drip coffees and two pastries i paid 15.80 Euros. Expensive for here but definitely a worthwhile experience. It's a place to socialize, not just have coffee and cake. Coffee and cake is an afternoon break ritual in Germany.

Yelp
I've had Baum cake in America once before and loved it, so I had to give Buchwald a visit while in Germany. The original baumkuchen was on point! Just the right combination of flavors and textures. I came a bit late in the day so the selection was lacking. I was hoping to get a chocolate covered Baum, but they didn't have any left. Or any other flavors for that matter. Although they have a visa/MasterCard sticker in the window, I believe you can only use a card if you dine in, not takeaway, so bring cash. So, it's worth it for the rare delicacy that is Baum cakes, but it wasn't as good or as extensive as the ones I've had in America.

Yelp
This is the home of original baumkuchen (tree cake). I grew up eating baumkuchen and I was so excited to try the original baumkuchen here! The place was easy to find, just few minutes walk from the train station. The bakery has dine-in section and had four different types of baumkuchen on the menu. On the day I went (mid-afternoon), there were only two types left so I ordered both! They were both chocolate-covered but not too sweet. They had a nice firm texture. They were perfect with my Darjeeling tea!

Yelp
I'm usually hesitant about visiting these type of places that are "the oldest cafes, etc" as they tend to be overhyped. However, I found this cafe exceeded my expectations with yummy pastries, cheap coffee, and excellent service (rare in Berlin)!

Yelp
Having travelled all the way from San Francisco, held aloft by tales of baumkuchen, we were not disappointed. A little way out of the city, there rests an amazing bakery full of darling traditionalists. The cute grandmas sipping tea, coupled with the passionate and welcoming staff make the whole experience just adorable. We even got the chance to meet the grand daughter of the founder, who told us that for more than 160 years they have been making this delicious cake in the same way! I mean, how can you possibly not love a place where even the bathroom smells like sugar and cinnamon? If you are ever in Berlin, go out of your way for the sweetest of afternoon treats.

Yelp
My friend and I were visiting Berlin for the weekend and we made a special trip on the bahn just to get cake from here! It's a small cake shop that also has space for sit down but that area was all fill when we arrived. We just ordered a piece of the baumkuchen, chocolate baumkuchen and a slice of princess cake to go. As we walked away we noticed a small table to the side of the entrance which we took over to eat our cake. The baumkuchen was very tasty and I can see why everyone raves about it. I really enjoyed the princess cake and loved eating all the marzipan that was on it. All in all this is a great cute spot for a coffee and cake snack when you are in the area!

Yelp
Old classics. If i was the old crazy cat lady, I would book my dates with my fellow old crazy cat ladies in this cafe. Jokes are jokes, but this is one of the few Berlin cafes with the history and with that special old-days atmosphere. This is the place to try legendary Baumkuchen, which is unfortunately is not that fancy popular thing among other hipster coffee places. Do not want to break the charm by saying to much, so just give a shot. Take your mum, grandma, friend, friends, co-workers and have a very pleasant sugar experience.

Yelp
As the last bakery on my abroad trip bucket list, it did not disappoint. It is in an adorable place of town, so many delicious desserts, staff helped us wonderfully. I got the traditional baumkuchen and it was heavenly. Not too sweet but sweet enough. My mom got the apple cake and loved it. When I come back to Berlin I must try their cheesecake- they said it won a national competition. If you sit outside on a nice day, don't sit next to the bushes unless you want a group of birds tagging along. Would most definitely go again and again!

Yelp
Celebrating 160 years of continuous operation on October 1st, 2012 Buchwald knows what Berliners want in regards to cake and coffee. If you want the ultimate Berlin coffee shop then look no further. They specialize in a German layer cake called baumkuchen. The menu is pretty much limited to coffee and cake. The dining room is very pleasant and there is a very nice outdoor dining area during the warmer months on the bank of the Spree.

Yelp
Baumkuchen is bomb diggity. HORRIBLE SERVICE THOUGH. waitress could not comprehend that i wanted one regular one and one chocolate one to eat at the place and another regular one to go. so when she gave me the wrong order i told her and she promptly threw her hands up in frustration, walked to the window displaying the cakes and asked me angrily what i wanted. if the cakes werent so good id give this place 2 stars

Yelp
This place is awesome! A lovely little coffee shop with outdoor seating (during warm weather) right on the river bank. A vast assortment of traditional cakes that taste as good as they look. I tried a tall piece of grapefruit cake filled with mousse and layers of deliciousness. I also had an iced coffee that came with a scoop of sweet vanilla ice cream inside, topped with unsweetened, lip-smacking-good, whipped cream. Service was fine, no complaints, no outstanding proclamations. This is definitely a place I will recommend all friends visit when they come to Berlin... don't miss it! Perfect way to enjoy an afternoon treat on a sunny day.

Yelp
Once again, everything is right in my world! I come to Berlin at least once a year for a few weeks, and my life was disturbed a few years ago, when they closed my favorite cafe on Unter den Linden, as they decided to renovate the building. Many years of sitting on their terrace, overlooking trees and the boulevard were ended and I could not find a comparable place. And then yesterday, in reading the local newspaper, I read about Cafe Buchwald - and went there - and found myself in a quiet oasis close to the water, shaded by trees with the most wonderful Torten in the whole world. I had two piece of different Torten - and they were to die for (probably if I had given in to my desires - i would have eaten 4 more pieces of their other Torten and then I probably would have died). "Exquisite" doesn't do their Torten enough justice. I'll be going back there tomorrow and then I'll be leaving town for about 6 days - otherwise I might gorge myself. But I will definitely visit every day after I return. I'm bursting out singing "Ich weiss, es wird einmal ein Wunder geschehen...!" cause today I finally found a cafe by the water that can almost replace the one I lost on Unter den Linden (it was a cafe that simply can not be replaced)

Yelp
Must visit in Berlin. LOVED every single pastry I got from this place. Wish we had time to sit and enjoy the goodies in their tea lounge. My recommendations - Baumkuchen, Chocolate Baumkuchen and cheesecake. Their cheesecakes are out of this world!
