Travel Guide to Dubrovnik, Croatia

"A longtime traditional restaurant at Ploče Gate singled out by Joško Leoni—“I am certainly a person who sticks to tradition, and I would single out [this restaurant],” he says—for offering the classic regional peka. The peka is made from lamb, veal, or octopus prepared with vegetables and potatoes, placed “under a metal lid or bell then covered with hot coals and fire and baked for two to three hours,” a slow, smoky method that is central to the dish’s flavor." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. We tried this restaurant for our 25th anniversary night in Dubrovnik and called to reserve the lamb peka. They showed us how it was cooked on coals in the traditional manner, and then brought it out to us. If you’ve never had this before, please try it! I have never eaten anything so tasty before! You can also get veal or octopus in the peka. We ordered a Greek salad to go with it and the feta they used was the most amazing I’ve tried! Creamy, sharp and utterly delicious! I’ve added a photo of the wine we ordered as it was very very nice. We liked this place so well we went back the next night. I had the goulash and hubby had the grilled steak. Both cooked perfectly and tasted great. Highly recommended this place…just remember to book your peka dish at least 5 hours before you want to eat!!!

Unbelievably tasty. Just a few minutes walk outside of the wall, doable for anyone. Food, service and atmosphere was perfect, with a gorgeous view over the adriatic to set the scene. We got the lamb Peka with some fresh cheese and bread sides. Wow, the Peke was unreal, they even offered to show us the cooking preparations and allowed us to take some pictures. The food was perfectly cooked (allthough heads up, they need a 3 hour reservation to prepare, as the Peka takes a while to cook, it's par for the course and worth the wait) Just to finish it off, they offered to wrap up what we couldn't finish to go and gave us a liquor shot on the house to warm our cockles for the walk back. Would come back here again and again if we could.

Very happy with our choice to eat outside of the old town. Our meals were delicious & excellent service from all staff. We didn't book so we were seated on the right side of the restaurant. I suggest booking which means you'll probably be seated in the restaurant side where the view is much better. Highly recommend this venue.

It was a late lunch. Food was good but I think the portion size did not meet the prices. The view was really nice. I think one shold try the lamb here. I went for local gulas and I think 20€ for 3€ stew was way too much. Well, what can I say…

Just a few minutes from Ploče Gate and close to Banje Beach. Prices are definitely cheaper than the restaurants inside the Old Town, but the quality of the food is really good. We arrived around 12:30pm, and it was quiet at first, but by 2pm the place was buzzing. The waiter was attentive, service was fast, and the vibe is relaxed. We had mussels in buzara sauce and grilled chicken with swiss chard and potatoes for lunch. Everything was delicious. Loved dining with a view of the Adriatic, watching boats and ships drift by. Bonus moment: we overheard a guest telling the waiter they came back twice because the food here is so much better than the surrounding restaurants. Another fun thing we noticed: a couple next to us ordered lamb peka, and the staff invited them into the kitchen to see it being cooked in the traditional bell-shaped tray. Such a unique experience! Highly recommend if you want tasty, reasonably priced food just outside the Old Town, with great service and an amazing sea view without the Old Town crowds. Definitely a spot we’d come back to.

We booked this for 6 of us the Peka is excellent especially the lamb. We also had the octopus salad, sea Bream and local cheese. They were all well prepared and tasty. The staff were friendly and helpful. They also showed the Peka being cooked. The Cheee is aged 40 days and is perfect for a strong after dinner cheese.

We booked this in advance for the Peka (bell slow cooking) and you do need to give c. 24 hours notice if ordering this. The place is about 5 minutes outside the Ploce gate city walls. Nice views of the water from the terrace and a simple interior. The food is really delicious with a lovely char texture. Well worth trying. The staff are friendly and they offer to show you how it is cooked. An enjoyable experience.

This was definitely the worst meal in Croatia. We went there after visiting Banje beach. They had "special" ribeye steak which was more expensive (30 euros) than the regular ribeye steak (in 20s) so we ordered to try out. It was so hard to chew and flavorless. It was like rubber.. Also, do not ask for ketchup even when you have french fries as they charge 2 euros for that. Employee was also super rude. When we asked for the check, he just said "X euros" which was more expensive than we thought (mainly due to ketchup prices). So we asked for the "check" and he threw it on our table. Bad experience.
