Finland is opening up for travel: Here's our essential guide to Helsinki, Finland - SilverKris

"Located on a low-lying harbour island, this long-established zoo (founded in 1889) is noted for its conservation work, having celebrated numerous Amur and snow leopard births while offering island-based wildlife exhibits." - SilverKris

Small zoo but still took 3 hours to go round as watching the animals and exploring all the nature zones and trails around. Great facilities and large enclosures. We enjoyed our time and saw some animals we haven’t before which was really cool. Being by the water was refreshing and amazing backdrop for the zoo.

The zoo was very clean and large. Excellent facilities, even for grilling. The animals' rights were well met and they were all in the best condition. Good food and enough space appropriate to each animal's habitat were very interesting and satisfying to me. Good luck.

Very beautiful place to visit. They don't have a huge amount of animals but, the ones they have, are very well taken care of and have a lot of space to be, exercise, run, etc. I would advice a morning visit because some of the animals will not be available after 16h (if I'm not mistaken), like some monkeys. And, when it gets too warm they will seek for a cooler and shady area, sometimes inside, which will prevent you from seeing them. There's some coffee shops and a place inside where you can also eat meals brought by you. Amazing selection of frogs.

The zoo is on an island (i think the entire island is the zoo). I got there by JT-line boat, which is free with Helsinki City Pass (recommended, many activities with 55euro/48h). Anw, the zoo is ok, animals are not really active on a sunny saturday morning of August. But they look well taken care of and have a lot of space. Prepare yourself with drinks and at least 1,5h of walking :)

It is nice to visit Korkeasaari Zoo with your family. You can bring your children and show the the real animals. This place is good and many children park, where you can stop for a while. Despite many cute and good animals here, I don't recommend to visit during lunch time. I don't know maybe we are not lucky enough, some animals slept during that time, such as tiger, and lion.. Overall rate, I give 5 stars.

I visited this zoo quite early (11am-2pm) there was not lot of people so no line, saw most of the animals except big cats. I assume they would be more active during afternoon hours, food and drinks were good and gift shop had lot of things to pick from. Ticket prices were affordable and all the events (feedings) were clearly stated in signs, I loved that. I recommend visiting with the whole family or group

Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki is a lovely way to spend a relaxed afternoon, especially if you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the city without leaving it entirely. Located on an island just a short trip from the center, it combines the charm of nature with the fascination of wildlife in a way that feels both accessible and calming. The island setting itself is beautiful — surrounded by the sea, with walking paths winding through forests, rocky hills, and animal enclosures that blend in with the natural environment. The views alone make it worth a visit, especially on a sunny day. While it’s true that not all animals were in their coops or visible when I visited — likely due to rest time, weather, or natural hiding habits — the experience was still very enjoyable. It’s not a traditional zoo packed with high-energy displays; it’s more of a nature walk with occasional, quiet encounters with animals, which felt refreshing and respectful of the animals’ space. I appreciated the variety of animals that were visible — from big cats like Amur tigers to snow leopards, owls, monkeys, and arctic birds. The zoo focuses a lot on endangered species and conservation, which adds meaning to the visit. One important tip: Buy your ticket in advance online. Not only do you save a bit of money, but you also skip the ticket lines entirely and can walk straight in — a small but very welcome convenience, especially on weekends or sunny days. In short, Korkeasaari Zoo might not be the most action-packed zoo, but it offers something more special: a calm, scenic, and thoughtful encounter with nature, right on the edge of the city. Bring comfortable shoes, take your time, and enjoy the peaceful island atmosphere.

Lovely zoo, beautiful scenery, and amazing animals. Really enjoyed our time here! Very kid friendly, we took a ferry ride there, recommend getting tickets in advance to beat the line.
