8 of the Rudest Places on Earth

"On the southern window of Brno’s Church of St. James, one sculptural element of the impressive church seems somewhat out of place: an indecent little two-headed man cheekily displaying his bare butt to the world. There are two legends attributed to the little man, both involving the competition between the Church of St. James and the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul on nearby Petrov Hill.  The first is that the two churches, each financed by a family from either side of town, were about to be finished. The spires of the two churches both towered high, but St. James’ ended up being taller by roughly 30 feet. The naked man and his bottom were added on as a middle finger from the winning church to the losing one. The second story is that the financiers of the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul were jealous of their competitors because, though Petrov Hill was a wealthier part of town, the stonemason on the Church of St. James was one of Europe’s finest. In addition to his skill, he was an efficient and well-liked laborer, and as such work on St. James was going considerably faster than on the cathedral. Using power, influence, and money the lords of Petrov Hill were able to remove the stonemason from his position at St. James’, but not before he finished one final window. This, of course, was the one bearing the indecent little man, spreading his cheeks toward Petrov Hill for as long as the church stands. Some historians claim that both these stories are apocryphal, and that the rude sculpture is merely a strange but not uncommon piece of Gothic adornment. You choose which story you prefer." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Church of St. James (Kostel sv. Jakuba) in Brno is a stunning example of Gothic architecture with a rich history. Its tall tower, elegant vaulted interior, and the underground ossuary—the second largest in Europe—make it a fascinating site for both history lovers and casual visitors. Climbing the tower offers a beautiful view of the city. Definitely worth a visit.

Saint James` church (Czech: Kostel svatého Jakuba Staršího,German: St.-Jakobs-Kirche (Brünn), Latin: Ecclesia Sancti Iacobi Maioris) is a late Gothic three-nave hall church church situated in James' square (Jakubské náměstí) in the centre of Brno, in Czech Republic. One of the largest well-preserved Gothic churches in the Czech Republic. Its history starts in the beginning of the 13th century. The church was categorized as a national monument in 1995. (Wikipedia) Highly recommended 😇

That’s a nice church, though not very posh or elaborately decorated inside, you can also take part in some paid excursions there (including the visit underground where there are a lot of bones). But the entrance to the church itself is free.

An excellent tour of the church, including the roof and the tower. Wonderfully presented, well organized, with stunning views and great lighting and sound throughout the presentation. I highly recommend it to everyone.

If you ever come here, pay a visit to the rooftop, it's amazing.

Really nice historic place, it was practically empty when i was visiting at weekday. Entrance is free of charge. But if you want to visit the roof part where they also project a short movie about history of the castle, that part is payed.

It is a beautiful Catholic church, very much High Gothic, it is located on the end of the Freedom Square, and it was used collect Old bones of Plague, cholera and war victims to store it, during my research about it I found 3 different name for it, 1- Church of St. Jakub. 2- The Church of St. James. 3- Church of Santiago. Unfortunately it was closed, so I have no more information about

A beautiful church with interesting history - listen to the guide in the church - he has a lot of stories and legend to tell you. Take the tour up the tower and you will see the unique two- ways staircase to the top.

Yelp
One of several beautiful churches in town. This one says no photos allowed. Striking for its high vaulted ceilings. The non-stained glass windows make the interior well lit. Another church with a very ornate interior is nearby across from Forkys and of course the one on top of the hill which you can climb up into for an overlook of town are also worth seeing.
