I wanted to visit Koyasan for the candle festival during Obon, but the temple stays were out of my budget. I am glad I chose to stay at Guest House Kokuu as it was the best location to experience the festival as it was right next to Okunoin.||Arriving to the guest house was easy despite the long journey- just follow the directions on the website. Ryochi-san greeted me during check in and gave me a custom map (very helpful - especially on bus info) , a verbal introduction to Koyasan and suggestions for activities. Breakfast prepared by Ryochi-san was also delicious. ||As I am not comfortable sleeping in smaller spaces, I chose to book the double room instead of a capsule. The room was clean and comfortable. It was very quiet and I had a good night's sleep. The toilets and showers were clean and well-maintained. It was very hot being August, but the air conditioning was strong so it was never stuffy. The place is very well designed and modern, but also had a homely vibe. There was folder of useful information in my room, which was a good read, and I took down a shojin ryori restaurant recommendation which I visited later (it was good). ||Overall I would recommend Guest House Kokuu as a great place to stay to explore Koyasan.
