Kristiansten Fortress

The fortress that saved Norway from the east aggression. Fortress is situated on top of a hill and looks small. But the role was significant in Norwegian history. For this reason it is one of the most popular tourist destination in Trondheim. View from the tops is breathtaking. They have restrooms but it usually has long queue.

Kristiansten Fortress is a must-visit, offering the most spectacular 360-degree views of Trondheim, the Nidaros Cathedral, and the fjord. Built in the 1680s, this historic site feels like a peaceful park today, perfect for a picnic or a leisurely walk. The white defensive tower is beautifully preserved, and the old cannons still pointing over the city add a great historical touch. Pro tip: The walk up from the Bakklandet district is quite steep, so if you’re cycling, be sure to use the famous 'Trampe' bicycle lift nearby! Once you’re at the top, reward yourself with a coffee at the seasonal café inside the fortress walls. It’s especially magical at sunset when the city lights begin to twinkle below. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for the perfect photo op, this is the best vantage point in town. Best of all? Entrance to the grounds is completely free!

Beautiful and historic place. Free entrance in the fort walls. You can be your own guide as there are QR codes scattered around the place that’ll open videos explaining more about the place. You have a beautiful viewpoint of the city and the fjord.

This is a great piece of history. My only concern is lack of maintenance. I fell on ice here and fractured my wrist. But over great experience

Kristiansten Fortress (1685) stands on a low hill overlooking Trondheim, Norway, from the east. During a Swedish invasion in 1718 the castle contributed to a successful defense of the city. Since 1997 the fortress has been a museum. Specimen cannon have been set up both within the central donjon and around the exterior walls.

It's worth walking up the hill to the fortress for the view of trondheim you get there. There's also a small cafe and lots of outdoor sitting spaces in the park.

I visited a hot morning in mid July of 2025. The place was empty with the exception of a busload of Italian tourists with their guide. Everything was closed, including the cute little café and renovation work was going on in parts of the area. There i a beautiful view over the city of Trondheim and the fjord from the concrete walls downhill from the fortress. Parking is free for an hour which is largely enough time for the visit.

The fortress was free to enter. It was a slightly rainy day so not a lot of people around. It was part of a tour we were on so it was nice to have a guide to explain the history. I would suggest reading a bit about it before seeing it as I did not see a lot of explanation signs up there. The views are also great.
