25 Places to Really Bug Out

"Step inside this 80,000-square-foot butterfly flight cage, and experience thousands of butterflies up-close. Inside the lushly vegetated flight cage within the park is like being inside a snow globe filled with fluttering butterflies of all shapes, sizes, and colors. It has been rated as one of the best, if not THE best, butterfly flight cages in the world. The site also offers views of other insects and a museum of numerous insects and other specimens. There is even a scorpion pit." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is a hidden gem in the city and a must-visit for nature lovers, families, and anyone looking for a peaceful escape surrounded by greenery and vibrant wildlife. Located near the Lake Gardens, this tropical paradise is home to thousands of butterflies in a beautifully landscaped enclosure that feels like stepping into a natural rainforest. The park is designed with lush plants, flowers, and small waterfalls that create a refreshing and serene environment. Walking along the winding paths, you’ll see butterflies of all shapes, sizes, and colors flying freely around you, often landing on visitors if you stay still. It’s a magical experience, especially for children, as they get to learn about the life cycle of butterflies and see them up close. In addition to butterflies, the park also houses a collection of other insects, reptiles, and aquatic life in its mini museum and aquarium section. This makes it not only beautiful but also educational, with detailed exhibits about different species. The photography opportunities here are endless – the combination of colorful butterflies, tropical plants, and flowing streams makes every corner picture-perfect. The park is well-maintained, shaded in most areas, and easy to walk through. Facilities like seating areas and rest stops make it comfortable for visitors, while the souvenir shop at the exit offers unique gifts and butterfly-themed items. It’s also located close to other attractions such as the Bird Park and Orchid Garden, so you can easily plan a full day exploring the area. What makes Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park special is the sense of calm and wonder it creates. Despite being in the middle of a busy city, it feels like a different world – quiet, natural, and filled with beauty. It’s an ideal spot for families, tourists, or anyone who appreciates nature and wants a memorable experience in Kuala Lumpur.

For those who like a quiet family holiday. Here is one of the places. Fewer visitors and affordable tickets. Not many people notice this place because visitors are more interested in the bird park next door. The butterflies are docile and easy to touch and of various types.

Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is a tranquil escape tucked away in the heart of the city. Home to thousands of free-flying butterflies, the park feels like stepping into a vibrant tropical garden filled with fluttering colors. The lush greenery, blooming flowers, and gentle streams create a calming atmosphere, while the informative displays give insight into butterfly life cycles and conservation efforts. Though the facilities are a bit dated, the park’s charm lies in its peaceful, natural beauty — a lovely spot for families, photographers, or anyone seeking a quiet break from the city’s bustle.

Google
Lovely place full of butterflies and you can even see some turtles, bunnies, frogs and when you visit the educational museum you get to see different types of insects. Entrance fee is 30R. Gift shop is very nice but a little expensive Unfortunately the restroom needs to be more clean and maintained plus there are no paper towels.

The Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is truly a beautiful and peaceful spot in the heart of the city. Entry is 30 MYR per person, and while the park itself is relatively small, it offers a unique experience surrounded by lush greenery and a wide variety of butterflies. The atmosphere inside is very tropical and humid — even on a cooler day — so I’d highly recommend bringing a bottle of cold water and perhaps a small fan to stay comfortable. The highlight of the park is, of course, the butterflies. While many species are present, you’ll notice that one large species is especially abundant and easy to observe up close. These butterflies are quite docile — you might even be able to gently hold one! Just a word of caution: never touch their wings. If you’d like to let one climb on you, simply place your hand under its legs and let it step onto you. When you’re done, return it carefully to a branch or leaf. They’re delicate little creatures, so treat them with care. After exploring the garden, you’ll exit through a small museum-like exhibit featuring preserved butterflies from around the world, along with displays of insects, scorpions, and snakes in terrariums. It’s both educational and fascinating. Before leaving, you’ll pass through a souvenir shop filled with a nice variety of unique gifts at fair prices. Overall, the park is definitely worth a visit, especially for nature lovers, photographers, or anyone looking for a peaceful, green escape. It’s probably not a place you’d return to more than once, but it leaves a lasting impression. Tip: The Butterfly Park is located near several other attractions, including the KL Bird Park and the Perdana Botanical Gardens. While the Bird Park is popular, I personally recommend visiting the Kuala Lumpur Zoo instead. It’s a bit more expensive, but the experience is much more diverse — you’ll see birds as well as many rare animals. However, please note that the pandas are no longer on display (as of August 5th, 2025, they’ve reportedly returned to China).

Nive view with nature and butterflies. Many kinds of butterflies. Natural green space here with built waterfalls. Small area but relaxing. Set of insects and moths are in side glasses too. Worth to have a look.

Google
Visited twice while I was in KL. Loved how lush it was. The number of butterflies seems to rise and fall quickly as they have short lifespans, so the number you see may vary day-to-day. Fascinating 'museum' at the end too with lots of different insects on display. Good to combine with a visit to the botanical gardens.

Peter LBK

Google
A perfect place for butterfly enthusiasts. The park is not huge and you can tour the whole place in less than 2 hours. Lots of greeneries inside with mini waterfalls and this made the place kind of humid. Be prepared to sweat inside the park. Fortunately, after touring the park, you can view display of beautiful insects (live or preserved), scorpions, beetles, snakes and etc in an air conditioned area. Finish of your tour by getting some great souvenirs and enjoy some cold drinks with ice cream.

Yelp
I'm not usually that big on going to wildlife parks, but the YouTube vloggers were high on this place, and as it turned out, Jamie W and I had a free morning. Located in the Perdana Lake Gardens, the park is close to Chinatown where we were planning to have lunch. So what the hell? We were kinda surprised admission was RM85 or approximately $19 per person. Pricey but we bit our respective lips and paid it. We were impressed with the first aviary. It was a large free-flight space with netting and several colorful birds flying about. Once we entered the rest of the park, we saw some of the peacocks and rainbow lorikeets scampering about, but then sadly we saw a lot of the more exotic birds kept in caged pens. Many were out of our sight in small coves. At least the ostriches and waterfowl were free to walk in their assigned areas without chain-link enclosures. The surprising highlight of the park was the bird show, which they hold twice a day. A group of park staff have trained parrots to perform a series of acrobatic and mathematical tricks for an enraptured audience. There were also educational displays to learn more about the impact of various birds in the region. The best way to get to the park is taking a Grab, and in the Perdana Lake Gardens, there are other nearby attractions like an orchid & hibiscus garden and a butterfly park. Yelp
More like 3.5: As a parrot enthusiast, I may have pumped myself up too much about this place as I was hoping to see more parrots outside of their cages. Mainly Lorries were abundant and playfully flying around. There are various other species roaming around and you can get real up close to them. Price is also steep at $18. There is only one way out so plan accordingly as it does get very hot and tiring. The gift shop was also ok-two of them and high prices too. Make sure to bring lots of water and umbrella for shade!

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful place to visit if you are in KL. The people are great at the actual bird park but I didn't enjoy the cafe personnel as much.
google avatar

Raisa R.

Yelp
it's a really cool place, but it's a tad expensive ($20 USD) and there's only one way to enter/exit so if you get really deep into the park you have to go allll the way back to the beginning just to leave

Yelp
My fiance has a thing about birds. Even though they are dirty creatures that can rain feces onto your clean head, we decided to visit this bird park. While not free for humans, this park has a great variety of free flight birds. I was excited to see a peacock near the entrance, but little did I know there were fantastic peacocks throughout the park shaking their tailfeathers. With so many different birds to learn about, I almost became an ornithologist. The park also has a nice winding layout with beautiful waterfalls and koi ponds. If interested, there is bird food for sale and also an area where you can snap photos with birds. Very clever to require guests to snake through the gift shop when exiting. Come for the peacocks, get frightened by the giant pelican, and be delighted when you stumble across the owls.

Yelp
I was recently going through the photos of my wonderful trip to Malaysia in May and some very interesting memories came flooding back including the KL Bird Park, hence the review! I must say this has to be on your list of places to visit if you are in Malaysia. KL Bird park is also the World's Largest Free-flight Walk-in Aviary which means the birds are let free in the aviary which closely resembles their natural habitat. The park is divided into 4 zones; Zone 1 and 2 are the free-flight zones; Zone 3 is the Horn bill Park and Zone 4 is where the birds are placed in separate cages and mini aviaries. The general admission (tourist) is 50 RM and for Malaysian residents its 27 RM with the MyKad (Malaysian ID card). I went with my parents on a Monday morning soon after the park opened at 9 AM. If you get in here early, it is all the better since there are not many people in and you can have a relaxing time enjoying the sights. Use their maps so that you don't miss anything. Also they have good signage displays everywhere. Check for the park's timetable about the daily activities which include feeding (YES, you can actually feed the birds!) the exotic birds like Horn bill/Lorry/Ostrich and bird shows. This will help you in getting to the right zones. They have a huge variety of birds ranging from your humble hen to the beautiful peacocks, pelicans and Horn bills. The best part is the birds seem to enjoy the people around and pose for pictures. We got some pretty good ones. The park also has two gift shops, Horn Bill and the Peacock. It offers a range of merchandise and cute souvenirs. Definitely check them out. Few Tips: - Try to go on a weekday. It is way less crowded than the weekends. Also try to get here early in the morning. The park opens at 9 and the birds are at their finest :-) - Wear comfortable footwear as the walkways can get slippery. - Never touch the birds or attempt to feed them on your own. - Also, do not try to pick any flowers or collect feathers pull out feathers. It is illegal. Do visit this place if you are in KL, Worth your money and time!

Yelp
This place is fairly interesting, and if you have some time in Kuala Lumpur, you'll probably end up going. It's one of the largest aviaries in the world, and a cool setting to see birds up close. I don't think I've ever seen so many peacocks concentrated in one place. They are allowed to roam freely throughout the park, and you'll see them walking next to you, sitting on trees, or just plain chilling. There are several parts of the park that are separated from others with double doors, probably to avoid potential fighting amongst the birds. The horn-billed macaws (not sure of exact name) are definitely a highlight. The birds all come from tropical habitats, you just don't see these in the U.S. I don't recommend walking there--it's a bit hard to find, you have to walk uphill, and have to take a loop around to find the entrance.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the KL bird park. I wasn't planning on visiting there during my stay in Kuala Lumpur but I had some extra time and I figured why not, I've never been to a bird park before and it's supposed to be one of the best in Asia. I am intrigued by peacocks so I was really excited that there were so many of them roaming around. All of the birds would allow you to come very close to take a picture of them. Some even acted like they were posing for it, it was crazy. We took a "Grab" ride (same idea as Uber) to get there and back from downtown KL and it was something along the lines of $2-$3 US dollars. Very very inexpensive for about a 15 minute drive. You can take the hop on hop off bus that has a stop right outside the bird park, but it would be hard to walk from anywhere else. The park costs 50 RM for adults and cheaper for children. I thought it was worth it. We spent about an hour there but could definitely have spent more time if it wasn't so hot outside. Bring a water bottle!

Yelp
There are not many good points about this place. Yes, some birds aren't caged and have access to roam where they want. That is true. But others are still confined to small spaces. And many of these birds look so very sick! The poor ostrich have lost most their feathers. It was so hard to even look at them. The peacocks nearly had no color. And the tourists!!! Seriously! Poking a bird to get their attention for a selfie! That is not right. I saw this with both kids and adults. This park even had an area set up to get your photo taken with birds on your head or sitting next to you on a bench. Yeah, that's exactly what those birds want to do all day. It was so sad that my kids were begging to leave before I even said anything. They saw how horrible it was there. I wish I would have done my research better before coming here. I tried to but so many reviews don't expose what's really going on here. Please don't support this place. These birds aren't treated well.

Yelp
Honestly, after visiting the bird park in Singapore I simply was not convinced that I could ever find anything even remotely close. Well, that is until I came here. Sure, it isn't as large as the Singapore Park, but there is one thing that sets it apart and that is the enclosure - it is much, much larger than any of the ones in Singapore. Okay, a lot of the birds, including the Peacocks, do look quite old, but it is great simply wandering around the park with these birds (though fortunately you don't get to share space with the ostriches or the emus). However, do watch out for the lorikeets because they do bite, and they bite quite hard.
google avatar

Dale N.

Yelp
This is one of the best bird parks I've been too. There are hundreds of birds out of cages all around you. I felt like at each moment there was birds to admire along my walk through the park, you don't ever come across dull pathways with nothing to look at. There are also some caged birds to enjoy, most likely caged to protect the other birds. Overall I didn't feel like the birds were in a bad environment. I've been to many zoos in Asia and normally feel bad for the animals situation but not here (mostly). It's also located right next to the botanical gardens if you want to quickly hop over to another awesome park.

Yelp
I wasn't sold on the idea of visiting a park dedicated to birds--I'm more of a mammal lover. Give me a cute kitten or puppy any day, but a cockatoo? Not so much :) Anyway, my friend suggested it as a way to kill time while one afternoon, so we headed there. First off, while you can get there via train, I wouldn't advise it. The park is located along a hill, and the entrance is at the very top of it. It took us the best of 20 minutes to walk it up. Going up in the KL humid November heat is not a lot of fun :) By the time we got to the entrance, we were ready for a cold drink and some time in an Air-Conditioned room. The park has a café, which isn't the best for food or drinks, but you either take it or leave it. The food was mediocre at best--I actually had to send back my Pasta Carbonara, because it looked like a plate of pasta with a gallon of spilled milk on it. Although I do have to mention that the café staff was superbly accommodating and promptly substituted my carbonara with a decent noodles dish. The best thing this café has is, you guessed it, the AC :) The park has 2 tented areas where birds can fly at will. Nothing to feel scared of, although the birds, being used to human presence, actually get quite close to you. While sitting under the shade, one of the blue turkeys came extremely close, because it wanted to eat some bread that was lying next to me. This works out really well if you wanna take pictures, of course :) Other than that, I felt the park wasn't well maintained, and that the variety of birds was disappointing. One other highlight was the waterfalls, at the south end of the park. If you walk to the top, you can take into the view of water and birds, and it's a nice shady place to chill for a bit.

Yelp
nice place for bird watching & upclose birds at the cafe is you're lucky !

Yelp
The KL Bird Park is an awesome bird sanctuary! There are so many different types of birds flying around freely. It's a little expensive to visit, but it takes a while to walk through and is a great way to spend an afternoon in KL. The park is surprisingly clean and well-maintained. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you love birds!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful place although humid It's wonderful to see the birds flying free Ensure that you have comfortable shoes as it's a lot of walking and water is a must !
google avatar

Yelp
Very beautiful! The park was nice and have a lot of different kind of birds. Some were in a cage but some was walking next to you. You could feed them in feeding spots and they seemed to enjoy the park as well. There were not so many toilets and restaurants in the park so make sure to go before the birdtour.

Yelp
KL Bird Park is delightful, stroll amongst feathered friends, including peacocks and other rare bird life. You can even have your picture taken, with a parrot perched on your head and a cockatoo on your arm. There is a Bird Park cafe next door where you can relax and enjoy a FRESH coconut juice, still in its shell ... mmmm. Visitors always forget to mention the wide array of flora in the park - trees/plants/shrubs and flowers of different varieties add to the overall (good) experience.

Yelp
For the bird lovers, this place is the goof for you to travel and discover. There are lots of birds there for you. Nice place for tourist also!

Yelp
If u r a bird lover, go for it! Definitely interesting and there are things to see. If u r not crazy about birds flying above ur head and dropping liquid poop all over the park, skip! Thankfully, we didn't get hit w/ the said liquid bomb. BUT I had to constantly scream, "Watch out for poop!!!" as my kids were oblivious to what was going on! They were too busy just looking around with wonder for exotic birds. Me? My eyes were scanning every inch of the path we were on. There were fresh poop, dried up poop, stepped on poop, etc. It just felt gross everywhere we walked, and I didn't want my shoes to get contaminated. And my hands were constantly on my head every time a bird flew by, trying to avoid the possible drop of their poop. We went there b/c we were told by friends and other travelers it's something to do while in Malaysia. But I was so miserable the whole time we were there, and we just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. Given the situation and how much we disliked the experience, I felt the amount of money spent (for the admission for my fam of six and for the round trip transportation) was a waste. I wouldn't do it again.

Yelp
I've been to the Bird Park once with my daughter before she turned three so entrance was free for her (yay!). I think I paid something like RM20 or so, can't really remember but it was reasonable. Parking is easy, just outside the entrance to the actual park, near the ticket counter. Once you enter, you will be treated to birds galore! The park itself is clean and well-maintained but since there are free-roaming birds, do expect a certain amount of bird poop. This was particularly evident at the bridge where the huge pelicans roamed. It was covered in bird poop, both new and old. The pelicans seemed a bit intimidating and that was the only time I felt a bit uneasy in the park. All the other birds were fine. They have a little Photo Booth area where you can sit and pose with a variety of birds, mostly parrots and cockatoos. My daughter hated this so the photo I paid for shows her crying! But it's a good memento to have albeit expensive as usual. If you get thirsty, there are a couple of little kiosks in the park selling drinks and ice-cream but they are pretty expensive so it's better to bring a bottle of water from home. They have an on-site restaurant serving Western and Asian food for lunch and I have dined there, it's average but definitely a life-saver if you're hungry.

Yelp
I have been here twice and enjoyed it both times. The second time was a spur of the moment decision when the weather was particularly nice. The admission fee (RM 25 for adults) and free for children below 3, is a steal for a place that is always so clean and well maintained. The KL Bird Park has a great variety of birds, all beautiful to look at. My favourites are actually the peacocks that freely roam the area and the friendly pelicans that seem to enjoy interacting with visitors. I love that the place is designed with the birds' natural habitats in mind, and that we, the visitors, are just the lucky people allowed to observe them. Thought they have a nice playground for kids, we have never actually had to go there as the main attraction was mesmerising enough. The place is a good walkable size and is also stroller friendly. I always recommend the KL Bird Park to visitors who are coming to Malaysia for the first time, as I think it is a good reflection of what KL has to offer, aside from shopping malls. Very proud to have this in our backyard.

Yelp
If you have a free weekend, and you want to go for a walk and enjoy the nature, you have to go to the Bird Park. There are so many things which I love about this park. Some of them would be that they have dozens of species under one roof. But the most amazing part is the fact that you can actually feed the birds. It's the most amazing feeling ever. The park is huge, so I advice you to have a lot of water with you, and you can also have some food. They have some shops at the entry, but everything is more expensive. The entrance is round 25RM, which is quite cheep for the amazing experience which you will have inside.

Yelp
Really nice place. Birds are everywhere. I wouln't expected that it will be so clean and nice. We had a lot of fun there. Great for children.

Yelp
Totally worth the price! Lots of species of birds, beautiful grounds, the animals look well taken care of and the staff was friendly and helpful.

Yelp
I have a thing about birds. I don't care if sometimes they are dirty or can drop poop bombs on my head, they can do no wrong. The KL Bird Park is really an amazing place for bird enthusiasts like me, families, or fiances that are forced to come here. I thought that all I was going to see were hidden birds nestled in trees 30 feet above my head, but that isn't what KL Bird Park is all about! You get an up close and personal experience with these flying beauties. Some times there are so many birds walking on the same pathway that I feel like I am no longer on top of the food-chain. Sadly, I think some visitors don't respect the birds and prioritize their entertainment over keeping the birds safe and happy. The park is huge and there is plenty to see. Take a selfie with a peacock on full display, tremble at how terrifying pelicans are up close, find my favorite pigeon with the red eyes, and feed some birds if you want! I love birds.
google avatar

Marija S.

Yelp
This is one of the very few attractions I've seen in Kuala Lumpur during the day time and it has definitely blew my mind. I have never seen anything like this. The birds are actually flying around you freely. Yes, some of them are in cages, but you can literally walk around flamingos! It costs 50 RM for a tourist and you get to go to little museums, where you can see the whole process of how the chicken is born. It is definitely a place where you can learn a lot about birds. You can have the whole day of experience there, because the park is big, it has a cafe where you can have lunch and at 3p.m there's a show of parrots that is really entertaining! It's a must to visit!

Yelp
Super fun. Lots to see. The bird show is great. They have ice cold coconuts. A good restaurant. Lots of birds. They are walking around everywhere so be careful. Owls are super cool. There are monkeys climbing on the outside. So watch your food. Cannot bring your own food inside. Lots of fun.

Yelp
KL Bird Park is quite nice and easy to get to. It's better to go in the morning, before it gets really hot (and often wet) in the afternoon.

Yelp
Went to KL Bird Park with my nephews on last school holidays. It is quite hard to find the bird park, I have to ask a police nearby to get the direction. Although is school holidays, it's not crowded as I thought, many parking space are still available. Entrance fee for Malaysian cost RM25 for adult and RM12 for child. It's is amazing when we get in, most of the birds are fly freely. Only few type of birds are kept in the cages. Different color and types of birdies all flying around while we walk through three different section of parks but be aware of the birds dropping from above. We then had our lunch at Hornbill restaurant and cafe. Foods is not bad with reasonable price. I love the experience to dine in there as we can enjoy our lunch with the birds that will sitting or standing surrounding us. But please make sure no human foods are allow for them. The only sad part was we missed out the bird show due to heavy rain.I must say KL bird park is more attractive than KL Zoo. We had a great and unforgettable moment there.

Yelp
This is a very interesting place...although greedily, I hoped to see even more birds, especially of the vibrant Asian species. Kuala Lumpur's Bird Park is a fun place where amazingly huge nets -- on occasion, uncomfortably making me think of giant spider webs over a hillside -- create several free-fly aviaries for medium-sized and large-ish birds. There are some small birds are around the large aviaries as well, but those spaces seemed mostly to be for larger species. (It might be interesting to incorporate a flock or three of small species, if the space -- and the larger birds -- allowed it.) Small aviaries and assorted pens hold most of the small birds. I was most fascinated by the storks and pelicans in the Waterfall Aviary, and by the flightless birds area that had close-up views of cassowaries, which are amazing. (There were emus and ostriches also; the ostriches were in a separate section from the flightless birds area for some reason.) The park seems to be built on a hillside, so be prepared for lots of walking up and down hills. The signage is pretty good throughout the park, and there are several shows and demonstrations spaced throughout the day. The park would benefit from wandering docents who could answer questions in the various areas though. There are several snack stands throughout the park, plus a restaurant just on the outside. The price was okay for what you get to see and experience. I was disappointed that there weren't far more hornbills, especially since they're a key symbol for the nation (and the rhinoceros hornbill is the national bird). I was also disappointed that there weren't more of the exotic birds from across Asia and Oceania.
google avatar

Aisyah S.

Yelp
Just as the name says, it is indeed a park full of colourful and beautiful birds from all kinds and sizes. Once you enter the park, it'll be like entering a net-like cage. Well since birds can fly, this is only natural. You'd also have to be quite prepared for the amount of bird poo lying around. Surprisingly, this place has some birds which they do not put in a cage while others are. So, watch your heads people. Furthermore, don't even bother to try and catch those birds. Trust me. I've tried. The entrance fee is quite reasonable and you can even bring in your own camera so I'd say it's worth it. There are all kinds of birds even chickens and peacocks. I had a lot of fun here observing the birds. They're beautiful. If you're lucky you might just get to witness one of the most beautiful birds showing of their feathers. If you haven't guessed it yet, it's the peacock. Just like it's name suggests, it can be cocky but beautiful at times. In my opinion, this place would be a one-time visit for me.

Yelp
Amazing park with lots of birds of different kind. We have been there with 4kids all different age. They had so fun feeding the parrots. The bird show was little boring for them but the park is huge and so beautiful.definitely must visit. Wear comfortable shoes some passes are slippery

Yelp
It felt like Jurassic Park with birds. We had a great time but it was hot! We wrote a review on our blog randrwander if you are interested in seeing a bunch of pics of the birds! Cheers
