Yelp
My husband and I were going to hit a place we discovered in Makawao (not on the) way to Hana, when I figured I should check Yelp to see if there was anything that looked as good that was actually on the way, versus the literal opposite direction. The reviews for the Kuau Store spoke for themselves, and promises of some of the best poke made this a very easy decision for us.
We luckily found parking out front, but definitely start looking prior to arriving at the store, as parking seems like it could be a bit tight.
This place is amazing, and I'm just bummed we didn't dive in sooner to research what was out there in terms of Road to Hana options during trips prior. Everything you could want is in this adorable store - from chips, to sandwiches, to freshly made juices, to poke, to breakfast options, and kombucha - this place is for everyone.
I ordered a spicy ahi poke bowl with brown rice, and then because I can't get enough, a separate order of furikake poke (shoyu, onions, sesame oil, etc.), which runs at $13.99/lb. and is unbelievably fresh and delicious. My husband ordered a breakfast sandwich (they make them to order!) as well as a sandwich for lunch (I honestly can't remember which one he ordered, but he raved about both of them - we're from NJ which is known for breakfast sandwiches, and he said this was one of the best he's ever had).
We also grabbed some waters and snacks - with two orders of poke, two sandwiches, and waters, it came out to about $36. For the freshness of the fish, and the deliciousness of the sandwiches, this is more than a bargain, and took out some of the stress of finding a place on the Road to Hana/not knowing what would be open or closed.
Kuau Store honestly made me wish that I had four stomachs - everything looked absolutely incredible, and I could have just taken a spoon to that amazing poke if it was socially acceptable. This is a must, and somewhere we will absolutely be returning to!
