Author R.O. Kwon’s Grub Street Diet

"At Kukje, a Korean market near my home, I bought myulchi — stir-fried, spicy anchovies sold in small cartons that I’ve been buying six or seven at a time — and I’ve been eating up to a pint a day as part of mainlining childhood food." - Chris Crowley

Google
K comfort food while. conveniently located inside the grocery store. Price: could be better because there wasn’t much of a ban Chan. Galbi Tang (beef short rib soup) - flavorful, wish beef were more tender. Perfect for a foggy and cold weather days. Bibimbap (Rice in stoneware) - eggs could be a little more runny but taste was good Jajiamyuen (black beans sauce w/ noodles) - noodles was al dente and sauce was not overly sweet. Then grocery shopping. I tend to walk after mealtime so this is just a perfect combo as the restaurant is located inside the grocery store.

Google
Love this Korean market. Always can count on the big selection of deli food with reasonable price. I like the produce selection also. I got a 2lb box of red kiwi for $7.99 compared to the other Korean market of $6.99 for 1lb box.

Nusrat A.

Google
A pretty big Korean market. I came here for the first time and it has a variety of collection. Vegetables and fruits site are big enough. I found a large number of Asian vegetables here. Of course their ramen collection is huge and I liked their dumplings sections as well. It also has a restaurant inside.

Google
I love to come by every now and then to see the prepared meals in the hot food counters-this gives me ideas for prepping meals at home. Walking through the fresh fruits, veggies, and Asian food sections is an exciting adventure for me. I can spend an hour pacing through the displayed items. There is also a well-stocked area on the far left end of the store with kitchen, bath, ceramic Knick knacks-many are good quality items made in Japan and Korea. I also make a point to pick up local fresh kimchi in the kimchi and fermented veggies area.

Bradford H.

Google
Great selection of fresh banchan. Produce is fresh and affordable. My go-to store when I'm making butter mochi and also need to stock up on fermented garlic. That being said! Their parking lot is crazy. Be prepared for a 4 point turn. Still 5 stars.

Young K.

Google
Food court, dine in, cold noodle and black bean noodle, big portions, side dish Kim chee was one of the best I had in years! Very delicious! Price is good, very clean, fast service and nice environment. Taste was not too bad.

Tim R.

Google
The mango they sold is fermented 😫 had to throw away the whole box. It’s not worth my time to go back and their phone number is not working.

Google
This is my must-visit spot whenever I head to SF — a great place to grab Korean street food, snacks, and all kinds of Korean groceries

Yelp
This is my go-to Korean market because it's so much more affordable than the others in the area. Their hot foods go 50% off after 6:45 PM - such a steal!! The last time I went there were definitely a lot of people waiting around for the workers to come with the 50% stickers.. but there was still plenty of food left. My favorites to get are the chicken wings and the kimbap..so good! Even their frozen meats are cheaper and just as good as what you'd find at H-Mart. The store is always well stocked, and I can usually find everything I need without paying premium prices. Definitely a solid spot for quality Korean groceries at a great value!
google avatar

Yelp
This is my favorite Korean supermarket in the Bay Area. It's authentic and has great prices (much better than H-mart and Jagulchi). The bonchon here is delicious, especially the pickled radish and fish cake. They also do a happy hour aft 7pm where they discount hot food by 50% The in-store restaurant is solid as well
google avatar

Anita L.

Yelp
A great Korean grocery store, with a lot of variety of items to choose from. I stocked up on some hot, ready to eat foods as well as some packaged foods and snacks on my last trip here. They even have a dine-in restaurant available if you're looking to sit down for a hot meal. I didn't realize it at the time, but if you're looking to buy any skincare products, you have to make a separate purchase at the beauty counter as the item won't ring up at the normal cash registers. The store is a bit cramped - the aisles are small and the parking lot is even worse. There's barely enough space for two cars to pass each other going separate ways and the parking spots are small.
google avatar

Amanda N.

Yelp
Was craving cold Korean noodles and went with my friends. It's located in a supermarket, which is kinda cool! They only lose one star cause you can't refill the kimchi or radish, which actually is really good. The chicken was ok, but I liked the spicy noodles. Place is clean and service is quick.
google avatar

Florence K.

Yelp
Decent Asian supermarket with prepared foods, produce, beef and frozen sections where the stuff on sale can be quite competitive on prices. I'm taking one star because they didn't have fresh seafood and I was looking for that to complete my meals. The parking lot is also small and can get busy over the weekend! Parking can feel limited but feels like people don't really take their time so there can be a quick turnover for parking. Would probably not come back given it was missing a seafood section.

Yelp
The best Korean grocer in the Bay Area!!! They have everything from beet kimchi, raw marinated crab, sashimi, uni, roe, jajangmyeon, all the sojus, the cheapest frozen dumplings, gyoza, mandu, cheap and good quality beef. There is also a restaurant inside, as well as hot foods that are 50% off after 7pm. There produce is decently priced and there are always weekly sales to look out for. There is always parking and it is a very clean grocery store with unbeatable prices.

Yelp
Kukje Super market is the OG Korean supermarket for those on the northern side of the Peninsula and if you are looking for a spot to grab cheap Asian meals and groceries, it's really hard to beat. I've been doing hot pot at home, and this is one of the more affordable places to buy meats and veggies. Compared to the similar bigger chain Asian grocery market , prices are 30-40% less here which is great for budgeting purposes. For hot food, I got a chicken Katsu rice plate for $9.99, and it was plenty for a single meal. They also have kimbap for $8.99, which is a crazy good deal considering the portion size. They got such a good selection of different rice plates and bites, it's hard not to grab something even though I just came for groceries.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try the Kukje Dine-In restaurant for a bit. Went by myself for lunch and was seated right away. They bring you a big cup of roasted barley(?) tea. I ordered the #39 Beef broth noodle soup with brisket. I received a small tray of banchan and a bowl of rice. Soup was milky and had a nice beefy flavor. I opted for the rice noodles vs the clear noodles. Good amount of brisket. I added the green onions for extra taste. Soup was good, beef was tender. All good- I'll be back.

Yelp
This review is for the quick service to-go meals only. Have been going here for years for quick cooked hot meals but imo the food quality has decreased in terms of flavor? Things aren't as flavorful as they used to be. Tteokbokki was almost flavorless, just spice. Japchae was flavored but still very lacking compared to previous years. The meat in the saucy boneless fried chicken was so dry and overcooked. Maybe I came on an off day?

Yelp
I love this supermarket so much. There are two other Korean supermarkets in the area, but they are way overpriced. This one is authentic and cheap and has a large selection. They have anything Korean you would want and also a large variety of Chinese and Japanese stuff. It's also great that they have ready made Korean meals you can just grab for pretty good prices. They also become 50% off later in the day. They're pretty tasty. The staff are friendly: one pointed out to be one that an item that I bought had a broken package and let me grab a new one. The location is convenient and the layout is organized. Lots of Asian shopping here so you know it's authentic.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty solid for dine in at their sit down restaurant. We got 4 banchan to go with soon dobu, fried kaarage chicken, and a stone pot bi bim bap. Skip the chicken, but the other two dishes were solid. It's a big menu though, so I expect I'll be back to try a few order dishes. Everything was tasty!

Toni Rose M.

Yelp
This review is only for the service, Service here is absolutely awful. They force you to tip 25% instead of letting you choose what you want to give. I left an 18% tip and was told, "If you can't afford to tip 25%, don't eat out." The audacity! Totally unprofessional, rude, and disrespectful to customers. Don't dine in here, take out would be a better service.
google avatar

Kristina M.

Yelp
I haven't checked the actual market out. Have only stopped by for the pre packaged hot foods. Great selection! A variety of Korean and Japanese food to choose from. I have to say, it is also very reasonably priced for the amount you are getting. Love coming here to stock up on some lunch for the work week. Staff are also always very helpful and welcoming.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Really affordable and well priced. I come here for the raw salmon for sashimi and make my own sushi at home. It has one of the cheaper prices I've seen for $22.99 a pound. (Jagalchi sells them for $30/pound) and Hmart for $35/pound) I also LOVE getting their Kimchi seaweed. They are so good paired with a sushi bake or salmon rice bowl. I swear by this seaweed. Their bulgogi kimbap is also amazing and again, very affordable. I love Kukje and will always come back whenever I need Korean groceries.
google avatar

Judy H.

Yelp
The good: the affordable produce (3 avocados for $1,) friendly service staff, and hot Togo food selection The not so good: the to go food was ok. We got the boneless sweet and spicy fried chicken, and eel with rice. Both were unfortunately not great. What was even more odd is that there is no area to sit down and enjoy the food. The restaurant clearly states that you can't enjoy outside food including from the market in the restaurant. The parking lot was a little busy, so I ended up parking elsewhere. Not sure if I will make a return visit.
google avatar

Yelp
I came by to get some snacks and a boba popsicle bar since it was on sale. Also got some green onions. Service is descent.

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Road trip back to Alameda, my wife craved Korean and realized that this place was half-off after 7pm. According to GPS, we would get there at exactly 7pm. Well, my wife went aggressive; see pictures. This is just for two people, just us... Guess I will have lunch tomorrow. They have weekly ads, see website. And other special sales, see website. Atmosphere - Good size supermarket. We especially liked the restaurant in it. The restaurant's name is Kukje Grill. Other departments are: Deli, grocery, meat, seafood, etc. Parking = Terrible!!! Narrow and almost everyone is a poor driver. So we decided to double park. Our truck was full anyways and I did not want another break-in. Open 7 days a week from 8am to 10pm. Service - Good. Price - 1/2 off, so great deal. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success for what seemed like forever. 20 years...?

Yelp
This is a nice little neighborhood Korean market that is also conveniently near restaurants, fast food joints, and the movie theater. Although the parking lot may be small that it easily gets jam packed and the building may be smaller compared to H-Mart, it has a lot of other good qualities to it. It has a decent variety of Korean food and products ranging from fresh, packaged, frozen, ready made food, and food from their restaurant that is inside the market if you want something piping hot. The market also has some household and kitchen products to Korean make up and skincare. Although, I mostly stick to the food aisles. This place also constantly has sales for their food including their ready made food that they sell daily that they usually sell out of. There are a variety of cold and hot ready made food that are decent. It isn't the best Korean food that I had, but good enough for the price you pay, especially if you go there in time for 50% off deal at 7pm. However, I recommend that you get there before 7pm because most of the food like sushi or rice bowl lunches get loaded into carts and baskets around 6:30 by people eagerly awaiting the staff walking around with 50% off stickers at 7pm. You also just got to be ready for the bustle and hustle around this time inside and outside of the market since everyone is usually looking to get that deal for an easy dinner for that night or possibly a lunch for tomorrow. Overall, this is a great place to go to for decently cheap Korean food and products. Just be ready for it to be busy and crowded when it has the food deals.

Yelp
Just some K comfort food before grocery run. Nothing fancy and just exactly what I need. Galbi Tang (Beef short Rib soup) - beef could be a little more tender but it fills the tummy during the foggy and cold days Jajiangmyuen - good, not overly sweet. Bibimbap - also good. I just wish the eggs were more runny. Then do your grocery afterwards.
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Good variety of options packed into this tiny store. The parking here is soooo bad, a bunch of aunties trying to get that 50% off discount that it makes it a driving hazard just trying to park here. I do like their kimbap, their produce selection is a bit limited, but they offer a lot of cheap produce. A lot of marinated meats and frozen meats also available. A wide selection packaged snacks and goods.
google avatar

Adithya B.

Yelp
I came here for soon tofu soup. I got the spiciest flavor. The soup was watered down. The beef was hard. They picked it with mushrooms when I ordered the beef soup. The sides were dry, even the kimchi. Maybe I am pampered with good Korean food in SoCal but this was not it

Yelp
Wonderful market As a hot foods/ready to eat lover, they have hot foods galore!!! Aisles and aisles of hot food, kitchen in the back making them fresh, and they do it so well they even have a restaurant literally attached to the market. Honestly this is such a rare sight in the bay and I am so for it Come early for all the good stuff
google avatar

Yelp
Boi....this place is really going down the tubes. Was in the area and decided To get pigs feet for my wife. From the outside looks good and when she opened it, she found all these little pieces at the bottom. She was pissed and upset! I usually get them from Hankook supermarket in Sunnyvale. Very disappointed. Even at the inside restaurant, very pricey and not appetizing. I'm never coming back here.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has been around for a long time. So long that I was trying to think what was here before. I did some research online, and in 1992, it was Any Mountain Sports. Does anyone remember that? Well enough history, this has always been one of my go-to spots for snacks, grab and go food, and so much more. The supermarket offers fresh produce, face care products, and a bunch of cooking products such as pots, bowls, etc. Service is pretty fast here, and it's a simple and clean supermarket. No frills.

Yelp
TIP: Their cooked food section (think bulgogi beef plates, gimbap, katsu plates, sashimi plates, etc) go on sale for half off at around 650pm if you you ever need a quick meal. They sell at quick, so get there a few minutes prior! I've been coming to Kukje since 2012 prior to their new renovation and the establishment of H mart just a few minutes away by car. I can tell you for a fact that there is definitely a need for both within the same 2 mile radius. Starting with the proteins: They've got a large selection of BOTH marinated and unmarinated meats. in addition, they've got sushi grade fish and an assortment of different types of seafood. I often get my KBBQ meats here if me and my friends want to do kBBQ at home. What's KBBQ without ban chan? They got an entire section of the store dedicated to ban chan alone, i'd recommend the radish cubes, cucumbers, ?korean acorn jelly, and more. Alcohol: They've got a wide variety of beers ranging from Japanese to Korean. If you're a soju lover, they've got plenty of different brands and flavors as well as a decent sake selection. Snacks: Personally not a huge snacker, but they've got 1 or 2 aisles for snacks alone. I really like the chocolate turtle shells, Those are a must try. Vegetables: No complaints. Produce appears fresh and not spoiled often see in the more larger commercial type competitors in the area. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The grocery store always appear clean. I will say they do often get quite busy on the weekends, especially the few hrs before dinner time. But nonetheless, they've got a great selection and will definitely suit your Korean grocery needs.
google avatar

Julie L.

Yelp
This is my go-to for prepared sushi and other foods! I've been coming here for quite some time and always get sushi rolls when we want to have take out food but in. While here we also always get some bok choy and some other produce too. One time we were there there were small avocados that were priced as 5 for $1. You never know what deals you'll find here. Overall solid store and the prepared foods are my fave.
google avatar

Fiona T.

Yelp
I ordered party trays from their hot food section and it was a big hit. I ordered the fried chicken, japchae, and kimbap. So many people asked where I got the japchae and fried chicken from. The store also has a lot of snacks you can't find elsewhere like Thai basil lays and more. I need to spend a full hour there next time I go

James G.

Yelp
Good store. One issue is that the tteok that they sold was old and hard yet they charged full price. Disappointing.
google avatar

Rose T.

Yelp
I've gone here multiple times and prefer this over H Mart in SF since it's not as cramped and it offers a wider selection at lower prices. With the cold weather, it's the perfect place to buy meat, veggies, and mushrooms for hot pot. And since you should never go shopping if you're hungry, there's a restaurant inside the market serving delicious sizzling bibimbap and seafood pancake. A variety of cold and hot prepared foods are also located outside the restaurant. Paired with steamed rice, roasted seaweed, and ripe avocado, their grilled unagi makes for a perfect DIY dragon roll at home. Side notes: 1.) Free parking lot *Verdict: Local Korean supermarket with a diverse selection of groceries and a no frills restaurant. I want to try more of their hot foods!
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
I love the variety of ready to go meals here. Pricing is reasonable and they have a good selection of cold banchan (korean side dishes), hot foods, kimbap, sashimi/sushi. Overall grocery options are not that large but the supermarket is not the biggest. The parking lot is small for its size too, so you might have to park on the street or the next lot over. If you go towards closing, the food will be marked down and if not sold, they might still have some discounted items early the next day. The beef kimbap here is bang for your buck and so tasty but I would skip the sushi rolls. The dragon roll looked really good but for $13, just meh. The shrimp tempura inside was kinda soggy and thick, and the rice a little hard for my taste. The diced chirashi though is a great value and quality for the price. Service is whatever, it's actually pretty glum inside. The lighting is a bit dim in areas and the cashiers aren't really friendly. I didn't see many desserts and only a small area for snacks so I think the main focus really is meat, fish, hot food and banchan.
google avatar

Geminyna J.

Yelp
Clean, organized shelves, well stocked inventory. Staff are friendly. Great sales that run from Friday to Thursday. Weekly sale is 30% off an excellent rotation of ready to eat food from the deli / market (ranges from kimbap, rice plates, steam items). Also a 20% off sale that rotates fresh / frozen meat (ie ox tail, spare ribs, ribeye, etc). Hot deli items get marked down 50% off towards the end of the night - this is when parking and checkout lines are most challenging. Worth the great deals but bring your patience.

Yelp
I'm not Korean but I love this place. When we head in SF I try to get my husband to stop at Kukje to grab some stuff for an easy yummy dinner. This places has everything! A little restaurant, pot and pans, veggies fruit, takeout food, and everything else you expect from a korean market including multiple types of kimchi and Banchan. Yummy. The only thing that stinks is the parking. It's very tight and people will try to steal the space you were waiting for. Good thing I can stand up for myself. However, I prefer to park on the street. The lot is tight.
google avatar

Ritz C.

Yelp
My go to spot at night esp after a flight from SFO. Food is good, friendly service and typical Asian market on the plus side they have a food court! 50% off after 7pm.
google avatar

Mecia S.

Yelp
I love this market! They have great produce and goods. I love the selection of fresh fish for sashimi dinners. So many types of ramen, kimchi and frozen dumplings. I also love the ready made food selection. Everything is delicious. My husband always gets the spicy pork over rice and some teriyaki salmon. I also like the home goods section of items that they carry from rice cookers to beauty supplies. They have everything. I also appreciate the size it's big but not so overwhelming that I'm lost. The only issue is the parking lot. I can't tell you how many accidents/near accidents I've seen in the parking lot. I try to park out of it whenever possible.
google avatar

Thomas L.

Yelp
Small Korean Supermarket but has tons of selection. Highly recommend. Vegetables section is huge
google avatar

Doug T.

Yelp
Great supermarket for all things Korean. Huge variety of fresh veggies, meats and bonchon. Their gimbap is the best. Given the proximity to H-Mart. Kukje has slightly better pricing. While H-Mart may have larger selection. I also like the cookware and sundry department at Kukje. Lots of necessities can be found there. Place is fairly popular so parking can be tricky but you don't need to wait long for a space to open up
google avatar

Imelda R.

Yelp
Clean, organized, well-stocked with Korean ingredients /spices, etc. and great prepared foods to grab & go! There is also a modest restaurant tucked in a corner. Staff is efficient and food was very satisfying!

Jean-Yves F.

Yelp
It is most likely that all these new Korean supermarkets is not helping Kukje. The food quality is getting worse and worse. The kimbaps are getting too soggy and tasteless. The fried chicken nuggets are made with hard and dry chicken breast that you can eat only if you're kind of starving for more than 45 days.
google avatar

Joseph A.

Yelp
I shop at Kukje maybe about once per month. Parking is easy especially when coming after 6pm, and the location offers for me a variety of shopping needs. Produce area is not huge but it offers all of the basics, plus there are often unadvertised sale items at a fraction of the cost of other markets. Meat & Seafood good quality and a nice selection for Korean dishes & BBQ. Restaurant, and a very busy hot prepared takeout food offering that goes 50% off at 6:50pm. Bulgogi, Japchae, Kimbap, Sushi, Korean Wings, Unagi over Rice are just some of the takeout offerings. For me it's a nice option when not wanting to cook. I will of course return.
google avatar

Majic B.

Yelp
I almost don't want to recommend this place to anyone because it's such a hidden gem cause they do not have very good parking availabilities. Buuuuut this is spot for all of your Korean cravings. I recently stopped by after years of being away and they now have those convenient store coffee and juices in a pack. And they are better than anything I've tried before.
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
Kukje is great in terms of pricing of product and prepared foods. It's better than H-mart for sure. Banchan are affordable - e.g. seasoned bean sprouts are ~$2.50 at Kukje and $5.50 at H-mart. Parking is a nightmare though and I would not recommend coming during busy hours. Good place to get inexpensive chirashi/sashimi as well.
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
Whoever designed this parking lot for sure did not have a degree. Parking is a nightmare and it's Diagonal but people can enter both sides leading to catastrophic level 4 insanity. Their food to go options are to stop for. Kim chi fried rice: 5/5, not dry and not soaking in kimchi juice. Gimbap: 5/5, flavorful Sashimi: 5/5, FRESHHHH Fried chicken: 2/5, skip this and don't bother even touching it Seafood pancake: 5/5

Yelp
Was looking for the dalgona candies and found the lollipops. Found some other kitchen items that I would like to come back for.
google avatar

Charland L.

Yelp
The Korean food here is amazing. Every dish has so much depth of flavor, and the portions are generous. Everything tasted fresh and well-seasoned, making it a really enjoyable meal. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jenny J.

Yelp
Kukuje is one of my favorite Korean groceries store. Too bad I don't live as close as I used to. They have a lot of good selection of here. One of the items I loved the most here is their Spicy & Sweet Sausage. They are mini size sausages that is packed with flavors and kick of spiciness. I can't find this in other Korean market. They also have a non spicy one too but to me the spicy one is the BEST. If you guys see this in other stores. Please let me know!! I also stop by here for this viral Cream Donut I've been seeing on social media. They have it here too! Tips for the Cream Donut. Let it sit out for a bit before eating it or you will not get the creaminess from it. I made a mistake on that. If you like my vibe, pls add me!
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite one stop markets for all my Korean (and other Asian) grocery and ready to eat food. The closest Korean market to me is Koreana Plaza but I'll stop here whenever I'm nearby. It's a great store that has everything i'm looking forward when I'm cooking Korean or other Asian meals. Fruit and produce section is great! Everything is so fresh! They have great prices for many items that is in season, so much better than going to my Safeway. I'd like to load up on the Korean snacks here too. The hot food and the prepared food is all amazing. Everything I've had. Here is delicious!
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
I lived in Sunnyvale before, and Hankook was my Korean supermarket. Didn't realize how good it was until I come here. I crave Hankook's own Korean Fried Chicken. When it's fresh, it's the ultimate party in my mouth. Crispy, crunchy, gooey chewy with a sweet garlicky sauce. May I lick my finger please? So I come here wanting that. There was two chicken stations, and I went for the one further inside. Got the Soy Sauce KFC's. After a twenty-minute wait, I found them to be quite good, but not as good. The boneless white meat ones were too, too dry. The banchan's that I got were not nearly as flavorful as Hankook's and most of their grocery items are more expensive than other markets I frequent. So I haven't found a reason to come back.
google avatar

Tracy M.

Yelp
The market is phenomenal. It has everything you need to prepare an Asian meal. There are ingredients for Dim Sum, Korean Food, Thai, Filipino and much more. There's a restaurant which is cafeteria style, but the food is divine.
google avatar

Alicia L.

Yelp
My favorite Korean grocery store in the area! Hands down, I'd come here over H-smart any time! When I'm making hotpot or kbbq at home, the brisket is my go-to meat but make sure you go early so they don't run out. Don't forget the shredded spring onions with your kbbq and the kimbab, DELISHHH!!!
