A Global Tour of Remarkable Musical Instruments

"When the rain starts to fall, this colorful drain and gutter system in the Neustadt Kunsthofpassage turns into a charming musical instrument. The “Courtyard of Elements” is one of the strangest and most enjoyable attractions in Dresden’s student district in the new town. It’s part of the Kunsthofpassage series of courtyards, which is an art experiment by the tenants of the apartment buildings on which the works are installed. Created by sculptor Annette Paul and designers Christoph Rossner and Andre Tempel, this piece was inspired by Rube Goldberg Machine, converting the mere patter of rainfall into a spectacular orchestral symphony. The other installations in the Kunsthofpassage project include Hof des Lichts, or “Courtyard of Light,” Hof der Tiere, “Courtyard of Animals,” and Hof der Metamorphosen, “Courtyard of the Metamorphoses.”" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

It's a cute passage to walk through when exploring Dresden ' Neustadt. Some interesting stores, ice cream cafe. Some buildings have art on the walls, some have sculptures. The Africa themed building is very attractive and artistic. All in all , if you don't expect much, you won't be disappointed.

Interesting but better for summer time I think, it was empty and many closed shops

Vibrant, quirky, and full of artistic soul. Each courtyard surprises you with its own unique theme, from singing drainpipes to colorful mosaics. Worth a visit if you love art .

Fantastic place - it was surprise for us to see something so interesting, like that, in the new part of the city. The old sightseeing is always good - I mean castles, Rathäuser, etc. But you can find things like that in a lot of cities. But this quarter is something, like you can see only in few places in Germany. Like!

Kunsthofpassage is an artistic surprise in the heart of Neustadt, a trendy neighborhood full of bars and nightlife. We visited in December 2024 during the Christmas Market and were charmed by the creative courtyards, each with its own theme. The highlight is the musical drainpipes that play when it rains — true urban poetry. Although the artistic installations are more simple than spectacular, the place has a unique vibe. The shops, cafés, and restaurants are often more attractive than the art itself. It’s a different spot, a bit off the main tourist path, but definitely worth a visit — especially if you enjoy discovering authentic and creative corners of the city. The surrounding area can be quiet during the day, but it comes to life at night.

Loved it! I was sure that I got the directions wrong when walking there, but stepping in to the courtyard was like stepping to another world. All buildings in the courtyard were different, but very pretty. There was also few interesting shops and cafes.
