One can run on the shore of Kurile Lake, a remnant of a once active volcano located at this site in Kamchatka, Russia, but before long, it will likely become apparent that competition for a meal in the surrounding area can be fierce—a brown bear which quickly came on the scene after I began a hike along the lake’s shores illustrated this point quite clearly, refusing to allow a smaller rival anywhere near the salmon feast he had procured for himself. Shooting a photograph of the two bears’ interactions was not easy, requiring stalking of the small beaches on the shores of the lake. The picture below is the result of such ambushes and was taken in the early morning hours from a distance of roughly 100 feet. Despite the battle for a fish depicted in the photo, Kurile Lake is one of the world’s largest spawning sites for sockeye salmon.
