We arrived in Kagoshima late in the evening and, naturally, went hunting for a place to try the city’s famed pork. Kurokatsutei in Tenmonkan was our pick for dinner — and it absolutely hit the spot.
Despite the hour, we were seated pretty quickly. The place had a relaxed, homely feel, perfect for winding down after a long day. We went straight for the signature tonkatsu — and it didn’t disappoint. The pork cutlet was fried to crispy perfection with a light breadcrumb coating, while the meat inside was juicy and full of flavor. The tangy tonkatsu sauce paired so well with the richness of the pork — it really lifted the whole dish.
We also ordered the grilled meat skewers, and those were a pleasant surprise. Charred just right and seasoned to bring out the natural sweetness of the pork, they added a nice contrast to the fried dishes.
If you’re in Kagoshima and craving pork done right — both fried and grilled — this place is definitely worth a stop.
